For past 6 months I am trying to replace Hard Drive in Laptop. After huge learning curve, I came across this video, But Hard Drive is not detected in system. Then I tried replacing on another laptop, based on this video, But No Luck :-( What else could be the problem? Going to repair shop is out of question. I might as well buy a new laptop then (and waste more $$$)
I have replaced hard drives in multiple laptops ( Dell Inspirons included ), mostly to swap the rotating disk to SSD. The only thing I can suggest, without being able to look at it closer is to make sure all the wires are connected properly. If you have tried it for a while, it's not worth fighting. I would go with your option of paying for shipping and getting another laptop. Mostly they will send out a returned or a refurbished one, but a working laptop is better than a non working one. Ohhhhh. I replaced the hard drive, not the laptop (I got another laptop, which is another thread). Hard drive was $45, shipping was $5. Luckily it is through Amazon, where I sent photo of envelope and receipt from Post office. I'm so glad you have experience with installing HD. Now if I need some help, I can tag you.
@Thoughtful Is there anything I need to do to prep the hard drive BEFORE physically installing it into the laptop. Will the laptop automatically detect the hard drive before it allows me to install Windows 10 (via bootable USB) So far I don't see any tutorials about prepping the hard drive before physically installing it in the Hard Drive, yet I hear all these strange things about connecting the internal hard drive externally and creating a simple volume using Disk Management. All my laptop needs is hard drive replacement which is roughly $50. A new laptop is well into $2000
No prep needed. The laptop will automatically detect the new hard drive. When we use a USB to boot, the laptop will automatically pick it up and boot if the hard disk doesn't have anything. If the hard drive already has an operating system, the laptop startup might prompt you on which device you want to boot from. ( For example, you can have a linux bootable usb and you can boot from it though your hard disk has windows ) You can also go into the bios and select the device to boot if it doesn't prompt you. Normally on start up it will show a function key to go into the bios ( normally F12 or F2 ). This goes quickly, so, you will have to watch and press the key quickly to get into the Bios settings. You should try to go into your bios to see if your hard disk is detected. Even before the OS kicks in, bios settings provide various options.
Oh good! I hope the company sends me a brand new, functional hard drive. I dunno why 1st hard drive they sent me was a dud. Will keep you updated!
