I hav ecompleted 55 yrs in Mumbai. I cant imagine that I have completed so many memorable years in Mumbai. I was in Hyderabad and when I was 22 yrs in 1965 in the month of August we came to Mumbai. In two days only I joined the Company which I got it through recommendation of my boss in Hyderabad , otherwise getting a job in such an International Company is not so easy. I had to travel from Goregaon to VT, first few days my brother came with me to leave me as I am not used to train travel. Once I got adjusted to train travel one day I forgot that he had also come and went straight to office , when he phoned forgetting that I told him I have come to office where will I go. That is Aamchi Mumbai we forget everything when we are travelling and our aim is at the destination. WE shifted many places. Had stayed inGoregaon, Andheri, some other place name I forgot inbetween Andheri and Sakinaka, Vadala, then after marriage Bhandup and Mulund. I have travelled in Best Buses, train, Contract Bus etc. First time when I came and when I saw BEST buses written in th ebuses I thought they are best buses and once when I was travelling to Worli , the conductor said kismat wale uthar jao, I thought only lucky people should get down :).

When I was in Worli could go to Siddhi Vinayak temple once in a while but after shifting to Prabhadevi and after I joined contract bus could go everyday . Also whenever possible we used to go to Mahalaxmi temple. Made so many friends in the train, contract bus , best buses etc. Many sweet memories, if I write it will run to pages

Nice reading about your times in Mumbai, Viji aunty. I too have fond memories of the city. We lived in Dadar for a few years in the early nineties when my father was posted there. My mother would always go to Siddhivinayak temple every Tuesday.

    :hello:Sister @iyerviji
Fifty five glorious years you had lived is a matter for grand celebration and pride. It is fast paced world over there. You have chronicled very nicely your those glorious years.

I derived nostalgia reading your jotting mentioning places you lived in Bombay suburbs and the travels in modes of rail and road. “The BEST & The kismet Wale utthar jao” reverberates in my years too. I can’t forget the observatory post at aarey milk colony wherein I had seen acting and shooting of films with stalwarts like Dilip kumar saira Bhanu, Dharmendra and Hema Malini, Jitendra...that drive on Western Express Highway daily in the early morning and return by evening via Saki Naka or through Goregaon aarey milk colony, canere caves and hot springs at vajreshwari...

The mile long queue of devotees at siddhi vinayak temple on Tuesdays, the Matunga Udupi Hotel’s, the Sharda Bhavan opp Matunga CR east, the concerns, Nalli silks Telang road, bhajan Samaj, Kings Circle gardens, vadapav with podi at BBDadar and that veg market all comes to mind. I enjoyed the night meal with music and dance at blue nile, the talk of town and Taj Mahal hotel. Visit to Elephanta. Those theatres broadway, metro, regal, Chitra, Sterling.

I used to drive at 4 am from Chembur to siddhi Vinayak every Tuesday and complete darshan by 5 AM and return to king circle Nathan ‘s cafe for breakfast by 6A.M.

ONCE FOR JAY WALKING I was taken to Vikhroli police station as I had no money to pay the fine and enjoyed stay over five hours at station, it was pre mobile era. While I was at station my friend and his family waiting for me to have feast in their home.

I resided with family in then Bombay now Mumbai for a period of 28 years
March,13, 1970 to Sep,30, 1998. Within Maharashtra, I officially toured to many places like Nashik, Devlali, pune, ahemednagar, Matheron, Shahad. I had friends and relatives in many parts of suburbs in western and central side. My office responsibilities took me to nava - sheva ports and Bombay ports.

Despite heavy rush and push even in first class compartment of local trains, I see commuters enjoy journeys thatstretch for an hour in double fast local trains that will just halt for a minute in only pre selected stations.

Once I forgot to alight at Kurla as I slept and the train next halt was at Thana. My spouse was awaiting at home to go for movie seats reserved. But I returned from Thana late in the evening instead of 2p.m.

My married life began in Bombay in just one room with amalgamated balcony at ground floor. Now I have come this far. Time flew away.

Due to rice scarcity in 1975, I used to go to Trombay village to buy rice from fisherfolk living close to shore.

First monsoon experience in Bombay was harrowing but then subsequent monsoons it was walking on cake. That flooded roads, two wheelers get stuck in stagnant water, couple of old buildings in byculla and new society buildings caving in were normal stories. Right now it is heavy monsoon “raining cats and dogs”

Once at Mankhurd walking on platform to take train to VT (CST now) I slipped on banana peel and fell on the track covered with gravels . My echolack brief and me were on track. But that was the moment I was thinking of my meeting with a friend- a Bhuta Bharthi Sai Baba Devotee.

The Sai thought was just crossing the mind and I was falling into the track about six feet below the platform.

A train bound for VT was coming at a distance from Vashi. A Slumbering COOLIE on the other side of the track rushed and pushed me to safety . The local train arrived halted and left. The coolie brought my brief intact. I offered cash but coolie declined to accept. I asked his sweet name. He said “SAINATH”.

Thanks for nostalgia and Regards .

    Dear Viji aunty,

That is indeed an incredibly long time. I am glad you have such lovely memories. I have only heard of Mumbai and everyone I know who lives there only attest to what a wonderful city it is. Have seen pictures of Siddhivinayak and mahalakshmi temples:) Hopefully, I get to visit at least.

    @iyerviji maa,
Wow! You are so lucky to living in same place from 55 years. I had visited Mumbai with my family when I was in 6th grade . We had seen gateway of India, Mahalakshmi temple and did a little shopping too. I bought a cute doll and it still alive in my memories.
