If there is one pandemic for which there is no vaccine, it is the one concerning freebies.

The symptoms are crystal clear. All you have to do is to read in the paper or see a TV ad, offering X free if you buy Y or buy two Ys and get one Y free, there is a pricking sensation in the ear, you start sweating, and pant the way my dogs do when they see a doggie treat.

Okay, it is fine if you buy a sari or a pair of jeans and get another free or buy a microwave and get its vessels free but now the freebie fever has reached absurdly epidemic levels. now, thanks to the pandemic.

It is raining freebies to lire people into vaccine centres, One would expect that in a country with a high level of education like the US of A , people would have queued up on their own realizing that it could save their lives but obviously, nope. This has forced President Joe Biden himself to launch the Take the Jab And Get a Glass pof Beer Free scheme. (Hariji, Viswa did you get your beer?).

Our countrymen are no better. In one locality of TN, where thousands live hardly 50 people turned up fr the shot. The organizers got a brainwave and offered free mutton biryani for everyone taking the jab and hundreds queued up. Other centres offered free groceries, veggies etc but the biryani centre drew the maximum crowd.

The Tamil Nadu guys should have taken inspiration from the US., Considering the long queues before TASMAC booze shops when they were open on pre-lockdown days, giving them the aura of Tirupati Dharma Darisanam, they should have offered a token for everyone taking the jab that can be exchanged at the TASMAC shops for the booze of their choice. Then there would have been a stampede at vaccination centers.

In some areas, the vaccine hesitancy is so high that those who went there to vaccinate people got the freebies. A group of medical workers going to vaccinate people in the backwaters of Bihar received freebies, instead of giving them. When they tried to persuade locals to take the jab, they got stones hurled at them absolutely free!

Woman and man receiving Biriyani in Kovalam, TN. They also get their mobile phone charging card, as well as a chance to win a Mixie/grinder in a lottery, or even a two wheeler in a mega lottery. This is great. All this is done by a private nonprofit trust.

Very different from the Gifting of a dothi+transister-radio for the vasectomy drive that happened decades ago. The doctor got a fee to do the deed, the finder who brought in the candidate got a fee, and the one who underwent the operation got the dothi+radio. Nobody knew how many were repeat or bogus receivers of sterilizations. Unlike today's aadhar number identification, there was nothing but a big blotchy finger print of the person on the radio/dothi receipt ledger.

Vaccine Hesitancy comparison [ data from large surveys, not sure if sampling was representative ] 31% Of Americans Still Hesitant About Covid-19 Vaccine, Poll Finds — Here’s How That Measures Up Against Other Countries:

Among 40,408 U.S. respondents polled between May 25-31, 31% were either unwilling or uncertain about getting the Covid-19 vaccine—19% are unwilling and 12% are uncertain—which is the sixth-highest vaccine hesitancy rate among the 15 countries Morning Consult polled.

Russia had the highest vaccine hesitancy rate with 53% unwilling or uncertain, followed by Australia (37%), South Korea (33%), Japan (33%) and France (31%).

The countries with the lowest rates of vaccine hesitancy are the United Kingdom (14%), India (12%) and China (8%), according to the poll, which surveyed between 1,864 and 4,566 respondents within non-U.S. countries.

Interesting statistics. With regard to China, in Hong Kong, they are offering a chance to win a two-bedroom flat

    Dear Balajee,

The first emergency authorization for Pfizer was given by FDA as early as December 2020 and the role out of the Pfizer vaccine started early December 2020 - January 2021. Soon after that, Moderna got emergency authorization quickly. The last one to be approved was Johnson & Johnson single shot vaccine which happend in the second quarter of 2021. Soon after it was introduced, it got pulled out of the market due to reactions among the receipients and again given approval to proceed further. Initially, the supply was meagre and only those who knew how to manipulate the system and those who are extremely tech saavy to hunt the locations where the supplies reached out, succeeded in getting vaccinated early January 2021. After Joe Biden became the President, he set up so many federal facilities to administer vaccines in all the states. Besides states have their own plan to distribute the vaccines received as their quota through their own state, city and munincipal goverments. As of June 9th, approximately 172 million people (52.4% of the population) got at least single shot and approximatley 141 millon people (43% of the population) got fully vaccinated.

By July 4th Independence Day, the President wanted to get to 70% of the total population and the rate at which the vaccines are given dropped significantly due to vaccine hesitancy. The total coronavirus cases dropped to 14,411 cases in the whole of US with 396 covid deaths on June 8th. But the President is worried about Delta variants reaching the shore of the US and hence he wants to continue vaccination effort with same intensity with which the federal government started the program. A reasonable size of population have underlying health conditions and are vulnerable to covid. Good part is, most in the age bracket of 65 and above are vaccinated. They have begun vaccinating the children from age 12 onwards now.

Freedom comes with responsibility and hence the citizens in order to enjoy the freedom to do business and enjoy freedom to socialize must vaccinate themselves whether they get incentive to vaccinate or not. It is the duty just like a duty to vote to elect a government. Who knows, may be the vaccine-hesitant crowd may get motivated by a bottle of beer. As a responsible citizen, I got vaccinated early enough without any expectation of freebees.

Trae Crowder [The Liberal Redneck] is my favourite talking head. His political commentary is true as well as quite hilarious. Here is his comment on the JNJ vaccine PAUSE by the CDC, and the general vaccine hesitancy among his ilk.

A recent article in the Nature has quite an amount of technical details on why JNJ vaccine could be the one to take. Genetics/Biochem types can google for it and enjoy.

    @Hopikrishnan,

I agree with everything he said in the video except he missed mentioning all the subjects are women. Frankly, FDA when pulling out the vaccine did say that the risk is very limited. The federal government’s 70% goal is primarily to drive J&J single shot among many young adults. In fact, it is very popular among the young adults. It is not even proved that J&J shot caused CVST. It is just an assumption that antibodies developed by the body in response to the shot inadvertently rile up platelets to prevent profuse bleeding.

That was the qualifier phrase that tweaked me to recommend my favorite talking head Trae Crowder. USofA as a country with a high level of education is the bunkum that many foreigners had totally bought into. Those in the know fear us for the very fact that we have totally uneducated folks in powerful positions, who may be in charge of things that can evaporate those foreigners in their beds, or even destroy the whole planet.

What we have is a multi-furcated nation. There are the coastal people, then there are the appalachian hicks, and the rednecks who still believe in the confederation of the south, the mostly unpopulated middle, and the wine&pot country out west. Those who surf in Hawaii and catch crabs in alaska are outliers.

Except for the coastal people (new immigrants who were educated elsewhere, and their kids) all the rest of them live in bubbles of communications where others tell them the same things they already know and believe. These are the people who can believe that vaccines are a conspiracy to control their freedoms through invasion of their bodies.

Trae Crowder talks about Lugnut and what he believes. About possums and vaccines. Compared to Lugnut from eastern Tennessee, a Bihari Muslim has a lot more analytical acumen, albeit thinking that the vaccine is the BJP plot to sterilize the lot of them.

Vaccines for adults in Washinton State, USA:
The program, launched by the state's Liquor and Cannabis Board and named "Joints for Jabs," runs until July 12 and allows state-licensed dispensaries to give qualifying customers one pre-rolled joint at an in-store vaccination clinic.
Hey Washingtonians! Get A Vaccine. Smoke A Joint.

Actually they should give the joint first so that people smoke them and lose their vaccine hesitancy in a purple haze.
