Gratitude is a popular topic in both the wellness industry and in spiritual circles. But is gratitude just another passing trend, or something you can really hang your hat on? It’s definitely the latter. Science proves that practicing gratitude can help to improve your health and your happiness. Here’s why.

    What is gratitude?
Simply put, gratitude is all about acknowledging the positive people, experiences, and/or things in your life, and saying “Thank you!” for them.

In other words, gratitude is a two-step process. First you become aware of the positivity in your life. Then, you feel appreciative for them.
Our minds are hardwired to look for and focus on the negative. From an evolutionary standpoint, this is what helped humans survive over the millennia. But this negativity can get out of hand, and it definitely isn’t serving us anymore.

When we focus on what we don’t like, what we don’t have, and what we don’t want, it fuels discontent, unhappiness and disappointment. It makes us blind to what we do like, what we do have, what we do want.

By practicing gratitude, you can start to retrain the brain to see life as half-full, rather than half-empty; as positive, rather than negative; as abundant, rather than lacking.
when you feel gratitude, you increase two feel-good neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin. These, in turn, can uplift not only your mood, but also your health.

What can you be greatful for in your family life, social circle, region, country so on and so forth.

How about your possessions, what fo you have that you are thankful for.

    Love
    Nandini

An attitude to continue to lend helping hand although one is sure that it is not going to be reciprocated, sure to boost up morale and health.
For getting opportunity too one should express his or her gratitude.
A nice holistic take on the sine qua non of gratitude. Thanks to madam sister @nandinimithun .
    Regards

    @nandinimithun,

A very well-written snippet in the testing environment we live in today. Gratitude should be spontaneously generated from within, it is an affirmation of goodness and warmth. This social emotion strengthens relationships, and its roots run deep in evolutionary history. Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. When thankfulness may consist merely of words, gratitude is shown in acts. Over time, feeling grateful boosts happiness and fosters both physical and psychological health. Studies show that practicing gratitude curbs the use of words expressing negative emotions and shifting inner attention away from such negative emotions like resentment and envy, minimizing the possibility of ruminating, which is a hallmark of depression.

A materialistic culture that encourages constant wanting and sees possessions as the source of happiness is not the most fertile ground for gratitude. But it is not an insurmountable barrier to developing it. Envy, cynicism and narcissism are thieves of gratitude. People who are grateful in life feel less pain, less stress, have stronger immune systems, experience healthier relationships, and do better academically and professionally. The best way to foster gratitude is to write a gratitude journal, thank you note to others, and engage in mental subtraction visualizing what your life would be like if some positive events had not occurred. The saying goes, "Be thankful for what you have; you will end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough".

Whoa... whoa... Nelli. Ease off on that gratitude lecture. People are driving lives with different mileages.
A girl in a 15 year marriage getting beaten only on MWF has nothing to be gratitudinous about, because she was beaten every day of the week only five years ago. We get a lot of such stories on this forum.
I can say a whole big essay on the matter... but let me just stop with this: Why is it that only boys applaud you first on this thread ? Because we like you exjactly the way you think. Volunteer to chattelhood, and stay there, and be grateful.
Members who feel wronged should come out and say so. Not sift through their miserable lives to find something to be less unhappy about, and hold it up... and go voila... gratitude.

Great analysis of the word but gratitude has its limits. For the positive people in your life you can't go to any extent to show how grateful you are, Somewhere you have to draw a line. In my case, the line is my purse strings.

    Dear Nandini,
you are right about feeling grateful - we almost have to train our brains to look at positives that are working in life. By no stretch of imagination does that mean, ignore the negatives or allow others to take advantage :) I have also heard a lot about gratitude journals and have a friend who vouched by it when she was going through the roghest patch of her life. Acknoledging these littel moments is simply a habit we teach ourselves to look at things that did touch us, in a positive way. Thank you for sharing such wonderful thoughts.

I never told that a girl gets abused and still sit and be grateful for that.
Being grateful doesnt mwan sitting back and taking abuses, it is like being silent doesn't mean being weak.
