A couple of days ago the wife of a former neighbour died. She was just 38.
No, she didn't die of COVID 19. She just died in sleep. I refuse to add the word "peacefully".
We have no clue internally what kind of struggle she waged to stay alive that night But this is not about her death but about my reaction to it.

I felt no reaction. I was just numb.

What is the reason for it? Could it6 be that we are living in times when death has become just a statistic? We open the newspaper and find that so many have died gasping for breath due to a shortage of oxygen and people are standing in a queue at crematoriums for hours to get their near and dear ones cremated.?

Feeling for the dead in a Necropolis looks and feels silly, doesn't it?

Am I the only one inflicted with this numbness? Or has deaths in such large numbers unleashed an epidemic of indifference?

Very fundamental question. The newspapers and media is full of Covid statistics of affected, serious, dead and what not. Accidents take place daily. Rapes and murders happen daily. Till someone our own is the victim, all this is just a number, mere statistics.
It is not that we have become insensitive but probably we are too helpless.

No, we did not become insensitive. Helplessness, frustration, anger dominate.

Yes, sheer helplessness and anger that we are not able to do anything about it even if the mind is willing! Very sad state of affairs. Feels like it has not been this way upto the time this pandemic has struck across the globe!

We are in a really bad state. A lot of emotions are running through.

Exactly Hariji, until and unless some near and dear ones are affected, it becomes statistics after we feel angry and pat ourselves in the back that we care and are not such insensitive people after all.
