I thought I was the one who loved birds. Yes, even pigeons. I find them incredibly beautiful and take it rather personally when people refer to them as the aerial equivalent of rats!!! [IMG]
Anyway, be that as it may, it appears that the pigeons have also taken a tremendous liking for me, or so it would appear given the fact that they keep trying to roost on top of my AC unit in the balcony despite telling them so often that it is not the best idea. They are welcome to play about my balcony floor or to drink water, but that is where I draw the line. But you know that story of the camel who came asking for some space in the Bedouin's hut to spend the night??? Well, in my case, it is the pigeons.
Two days ago, found a pair trying to make themselves on top of the Godrej cupboard in one of the rooms. Told them no go, but they had to go and so they went. A few minutes later, I saw one of them peering into my room from the window sill. It was no quick dekko, but a proper assessment of the suitability of the room for the future generation to make its entry into this world. Soon enough the other one came, took one look ..... uh oh. Not suitable enough and so the pair flew off.
Today I went back to the room with the Godrej and was taken aback to see the pigeon on the floor. It was almost sunset. I tried to shoo it away and it kept hopping around. It looked injured and did not seem to be able to fly. I was at my wit's end. What was I to do? It seemed quite scared, went under the Godrej, behind the Godrej, made me move around furniture and I had to finally prod it out with a broomstick. Eventually I got a cloth, put it on the bird, picked it up and took it to the balcony ledge in the hope it would fly off in a while. It didn't. I offered it water. It did not drink it. Was worried about any passing cat getting at it. A call to the security might help. The security promised to come in a couple of minutes. His couple of minutes have turned to a couple of hours and he is still coming. In the meanwhile, believing his promise, I had moved the bird to the outer balcony near the pots. There it sat quite happily. Just then a person came along to deliver some stuff I had ordered. He was very curious about the pigeon, wondering if it was 'my' pigeon. When I told him it was a free pigeon, he asked if he could take it. He tried to take it and what happened next??? THE PIGEON AFTER ALL THIS DRAMA JUST FLEW AWAY!!! It probably thought my already back breaking day had not achieved its goal quite completely and what was remaining was upto it to fulfil!!!
Pigeons! Pretty Jezebels! It's high time they knew I drew the line at letting them share house and hearth with me.

I think they can be annoying. I don't want to be anywhere near them.

I agree. I love watching them from afar. They are beautiful to look at, but I draw the line at letting them anywhere near or into the house.

    :hello::hello:
What an unpleasant comparison. Is it based on colour grey then I beg to differ. At close proximity I see the pigeons around my buildings and trees and in ledges. They have that rainbow patch around their slender neck. The pinkish red round around their eyes on either side - what an accentuation to their beauty! Of course their beaks are hard to tear their prey and break the walnuts.

That is how my family make them gather around but their droppings notwithstanding making the floor and parapets dirty.
I too experienced a moment when a pigeon broke its leg and one full day we spent checking often it’s safety and fed it with fruits and nut. A veterinarian in the making in our neighbourhood was called who gave medication and took it with him .

A funtastic narration of experience of watching pigeons from afar and at close proximity. It is almost that you heard their conversations about their finding suitable place for their producing future generations. I enjoyed reading every description of their movements from moment to moment and your comfort or and discomfiture. Like rose is a rose, a dive is a dove and a pigeon is a pigeon.

I too had close association with this pigeons for four long years at thirteenth floor overlooking adjacent huge hill at Anushakthi Nagar. From our kitchen we could watch pigeons almost in close up as they fly in a parabolic arc and the merge into a rhombus disappear into white or grey clouds.

Table was set with dishes and we decided to have dinner after going out for whiff of fresh air. We kept switch on of dinning hall light. Spouse & I with our girl & boy went for a stroll when it was around 8 pm. We returned after an hour got into the elevator to reach our floor. When elevator stopped midway, it was blackout. For almost half an hour we got stuck. We could hear people talk with their flash light on outside the elevator in upper floor.

Finally when power restored, we returned to our floor and entered our flat. The moment the door opened , we saw in that thirty x twelve hall, pigeons flying in random directions and dishes tilted and scattered over the table and floor. All but one of the wide glass windows closed to avoid pigeons coming in. But through that one open window they all struggled to get out in queue.

    Thanks for nostalgia.
    Regards.

This made me wonder if "make themselves" is some translation from "Indian" to what the Americans refer to as "make out", that is, get amorous.
It is obvious that the pigeon could smell ginger-garlic paste in that man's hand. When some people are nervous to even touch a bird, some others may view an opportunity to add protein to their diet. After all with the right spices and some ginger-garlic paste, everything tastes like chicken.

Ouch! I shudder to think what would have been the consequence. It hurts me even more to think of what that intuitive pigeon would have thought of me!!! Can't even imagine folks killing such gentle creatures to eat them!

Eating biriyani without cutlery can leave the smell of G-G paste on the fingers for quite some time. No amount of soap or scrubbing can get rid of it.
You must contrive an essay on what a pigeon would have thought.... I promise to read and comment.
Wars had reduced the pigeon populations, while increasing the number of crows. This had happened in Europe during 1940-45 period. Statues, and churches were cleaner. Crows had better control over involuntary defecation than Pigeons. For some reason crows don't care for awnings of buildings, or gaps above Godrej cupboards for home sites. Being omnivores, they probably knew where they belonged. Poor things!
Such a lot of gentle creatures become dinners each day. For humans who are into such things, they are probably wondering how such a lot of the food chain, where gentle is eaten by less gentle, is even possible without ginger-garlic paste!!?:confundio1:

I must add here what crossed my mind when I entered with family into the dim lit hall. The crescendo - the final moments of the Alfred Hitchcock’s film story “ The Birds” came in view but fortunately the all made a hurried exit. The dinning table was a mess and so the dishes that impelled us to again to enjoy dinner out in yogi restaurant at diamond gardens Chembur.
    Thanks & Regards.

GOD - birds too like mouse are granted divinity status in Hindu Pantheon. Peacock peahen - Lord Karthikeyan, Garuda - Lord Narayana, Parrot - a Macaw - GODESS Kamakshi or Madurai Meenakshi
