How do I be fluent in Hindi in a year? Right now I do Duolingo.com exercises. I type my answers in Hindi. I repeat phrases in Hindi. I wish to read, write, speak fluently in Hindi in a year. How many hours a day do I dedicate. I have a lot of other things on my plate, but this is rather important. After Hindi, I want to be fluen in Tamil.
According to my experience with Indian languages, Hindi as well as regional languages is that the more we converse with others and experience the language it's easier for us to pick it up. Inspite of learning some Hindi in school, practically I lacked fluency in speech...so I started conversing in Hindi with others, and watched Hindi serials and Hindi movies regularly...first with sub titles and without sub titles too . .same with other regional languages too...it helps that on living in a town where people know many languages...my domestic helps who have worked for me till now also helped to some extent...when they would speak to me in their language, out of necessity I too would pick up their language .

Learning a different language is always far easier by residing in the place where she is spoken by vast majority, having exposure to people speaking only that language in a class room. But learning grammar of Hindi is a tad different! 3. When I was posted in a place where I was totally ignorant of the native language, I had teething trouble in instructing and getting things done. I had to learn fast, pick up essential words, have a reasonably sound vocabulary of functional words of the language which could be put into use in day to day working like ordering and instructing. 4. I observed that it was far easier to by heart the sounds of functional words by writing them in alphabet familiar to you and soon i by hearted the sentences in first person quickly and lo in month I made substantial progress. Of course it landed me at times in embarrassment or funny as I was found using the phrases or and words without knowing its effectiveness as a double entendre. 5. Once I was not knowing the right word for instructing to tighten the bolt & nut . I was telling in his language that “ it is still lose”. At the end of interview, a man in panel testing my working knowledge of Hindi, told me to call the orderly to get in. I was able to instruct in Hindi from my seat - “ hare peon idhar aavo” The orderly standing outside heard and came in. Then the panelist told that I should now instruct the orderly to move out of the chamber. I did not know the sentence in Hindi for giving that instruction. Then an idea crossed my mind. I went out of the chamber and from outside I called the orderly thus: “hare peon idhar aavo” . 6. For learning & teaching numbers in Hindi, I would suggest a paragraph copied here from link Ekalaiva The Errand Boy (Quote) I taught him to write in Tamil and also few words in spoken English and Hindi as well; and from other lodgers, he imbibed words of other languages. His flair and keenness for quick learning turned out to be another virtue for his future entrepreneurship. 7. I had cleared his perpetual grand confusion between Hindi words day-idd (one and half) and ada-ee (2 and 1/2); made him learn Hindi numerals instead serially in ascending order, I taught him to read numerals in as a sequence 11, 21, 31, 41, and then 22, 32, 42, 52, and so on. In streets of Mumbai & in highways of Maharashtra one can pick up many hilarious slogans - quotes- written in Hindi in fluorescent paint on rear bumper. Part of Hindi learning from these slogans or quotes as I used to gather driving on highways of Maharashtra. Very thorough and detailed post. A LOT of great information! I will read the links you posted. And I like the link to the hilarious slogans written behind Indian trucks. That is a novel way to become fluent in Hindi.
Thanks for the appreciation . “ boori nazarwale Thera mugh kala” was the first of the few slogans I by hearted . I was compelled to learn and by heart effortlessly these quotes as I used drive in my olive green jeep for long duration behind slogan painted bumper trucks on clear highways between Bombay then Mumbai now to Thane. The second one my most favourite which often I used to blabber to my spouse is that “ agar aap chahtha tho my akash may akas may jakkar tharay thodkar aah saktha hoon. Few trucks used to carry the written proverbs in Hindi like “hathi jahtha hai bazaar, Kurtha bhuktha hai Hazar” There are some simple Hindi folklore and cine songs with pleasant music listening to which too helps picking the language at great speeds.
