Can Someone Tell Me How They Get Both Prebiotics And Probiotics In Their Diets

    There are so many websites that give info on Prebiotics and Probiotics.

    I know they sell Probiotics in many supplement form, but I want to avoid.

    If I'm not mistaken,

    Prebiotics is food for good bacteria in your stomach and intestines. Example is garlic, onion, leeks, bananas.
    Probiotics is the actual good bacteria. Example is Yogurt and other fermented food.

    I heard if you eat too much Probiotics, it eats the lining of your stomach and intestines, hence causing pains, ulcers. So it is important to have balance of Prebiotics and Probiotics.

    But is Yogurt really a good source of Probiotic, or does good bacteria have to be added to it.

    Can you clarify.

    Yoghurt is a good source of bacteria. No need to add anything to it. If you can have regularly that is the best!
    Other fermented foods like kanji also are sources for good bacteria.
    If you heat them, you will destroy the live culture, so remember to eat it as it is.
    If you buy yoghurt from outside, ensure that it is live bacteria.

    You get some powders like Bifilac that you can have separately for good bacteria, but definitely chemicals are only a substitute, so absorption is not efficient. Only to be taken if you cannot take yoghurt directly.

    Yogurt is an excellent source. Make sure it has live active cultures. You can also make your own yogurt at home. If you like the taste then kimchi and kombucha are also good sources.
    Otherwise just make sure you’re eating a healthy balanced diet.

    You mean that companies who make yougart do so WITHOUT including live cultures.

    I thought that making yougart involves action from live cultures.

    Please explain.

    I'm gonna have to see what is kimchi and kombucha. They sound cute but I've barely heard of them!

    No. I didnt mean that.

    They definitely do grow it with live cultures only - but sometimes, the processing/preservation/packaging/transportation may affect them. Try to set curd (like how we do at home) using starter from packaged curd, you will know what I mean. They are not always alive.

    There are very few types of packaged yoghurt that are labelled specifically as "Live culture"

    That way, even idli, bread etc are fermented and made from live cultures, but when we cook it, the live culture is no longer alive in the food, but we eat them for energy and carbs, so that is fine.

    In this query, you wanted to eat yoghurt specifically for the live culture - to develop our gut bacteria - so they must be live culture.

    So I mentioned to check it if you are buying packaged yoghurt.

    This is great explanation on cultures and how they get killed by cooking process.

    Now we are extra equipped with knowledge, i.e. which yogurt to buy!

    You made me hungry for idli now :)

    :hello:In my young days whenever after dinner cooked rice is left over, mom soak it in drinking water and every morning before noon she will mix that rice and little butter milk with gingily ( this) oil and make me drink. This regimen strictly followed in summer season when day temperatures hover between 33 to 42 or 44 deg C.

    It not only kept the system cool and helped in many other ways. At that time the word biotic - pre or pro - not known to me.

    But then, later years I understood the values behind our eating left over rice in the manner I described above. Great our ancestors knowledge of human body vs food. Only difference is the same think taught to us under a different name.
