:hello: When Gods & Their Consorts Conspire to Test Chastity :hello:

In a remote forest, monk Maharishi Atthri with his spouse Anusuya were living practising austerity.

To serve her beloved husband was the sole aim of Anusuya. She being childless, constantly prayed to the lord that she should beget only lords of trinity as her children.

Moved by her steadfast vow and penance, Trinity lords sought advice of their respective spouse.

The lords’ spouse unanimously decided that Anusuya be subjected to a litmus test and in that if she succeeds then the lords can become her babies. But in the heart of heart they hoped that Anusuya would fail the test.

The lords - Brahma, Vishnu & Siva - the trinity, arrived incognito as monks at the hovel - hermit’s cottage in the midst of forest. Upon seeing Anusuya at doorstep, they requested her to provide them food.

She invited them indoors and arranged for food and when she was about to serve them the food, monks told her that they would accept and eat if and only if she serve the food in her birthday suit.

Anusuya was least perturbed or perplexed at this queer demand of the monks. She had solid belief in herself about her chastity and her singular loyalty to her husband.

(She had one glance at the shiny copper container in the corner containing puja-water which she used daily to worship the feet of her spouse during dawn and prayed for his well being)

She stridently reached the container, transferred little of the sacred water from that copper container into her palm and with closed eyes prayed to the lord that, “ if my chastity and loyalty to my husband is entirely true, let this three monks turn into babies”. Concluding her averment thus, she sprinkled the sacred water from her palm onto the shining pate of the monks.

This act of her instantly caused the metamorphosis of Lords in disguise into babies. It was followed by her wish to the Lord “let now my breasts secrete copious milk”. (lord granted her wish)

Now as desired by the monks, she turned naked and then breast-fed the kids.

Anusuya’s husband Athri who was outdoor, could visualise all these events in his mind’s eye. As soon as he entered the hermitage, he gathered together all the three kids with open arms and hugged. Voila! The kids merged into one body but with three heads, six hands and only two feet. He named the just united and transformed into a single baby as Dhathathreya.

Spouses of these three lords instantly came to know that her husband's have turned not only into babies but latching and suckling at breast of Anusya. Bewildered, rushed at once from their celestial abode to Anusuya’s hermitage and were astounded to see a single baby with multiple heads, hands and feet.

Teary-eyed, they narrated to saint Athri, the deliberation they had with their husbands when Anusuya was observing penance and beseeched the saint to bring back their spouse forthwith in their original form.

Saint Athri full of aplomb, responded to them calmly and politely thus "we being childless, need to have this baby as much as you like return of your spouse in their original form."

Listening to this, the three baby lords regained their original form and stood erect, announcing that just created baby would remain in the hermitage with Athreyas to be raised into a great saint.

Responding thus, three lords vanished with their consort.

The three Lords combined in one body born on this planet as a preceptor with a view to indoctrinate the people in kaliyuga as to how they should lead their life in harmony & peace.

Though Worshipping God in several different names & forms at different season is a way of life among devout Hindus, yet all forms are believed to be one and only reflection and representation of parabrahamam.

    DATHATHAREYA

This POORNIMA FULL MOON day (29 Dec 20) celebrated as reincarnation day of triumvirates Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva in a single avatar known as DATHATHREYA.

DEVOUT followers of this saint guru in State of Maharashtra, Karnataka & UP in India observe fast and shrines dedicated to this saint would celebrate with pomp for three days in a row.

The sacred place where Gods enacted this drama is known as SUSEENDHRAM - a tiny town in South India and the Thanu Hills in this area considered to be another living form of - saint Dhathathreya.

    Happy New Year to All.

If you go to the Sucheendram temple, the tour guide will show you the place where this entire "Leela" happened.

A fascinating place with a very large Hanuman vigraha
Whenever I visited Kanyakumari, I would visit Sucheendram also.

    Keep Smiling

Gods are supposed to be omniscient. So they must have known about Anusuya's chastity. If they didn't they are not omniscient. The issue is humans created gods in their minds and endowed them with human passions like anger, jealousy and doubt. Here it is doubt

As I said it is a basic question of faith. There is no way to authenticate such stories. Some old temples are famous for one or the other God or Goddess. Today temples have idols of all popular god and goddesses. Each day fo the week is fixed for a God or Goddess. No temple wants to lose revenue so they keep all of them.
I believe in God and do visit temples but strongly believe that God lives in us. There is no need to find him elsewhere.

    :hello:
Am glad that you could drop by and thank you for info about that Suseendhra temple.
I happened to visit five decades ago that huge hanuman temple and get to know that tender coconut water poured at the town of the huge idol of Lord Hanuman would branch out meander and by the time it reaches bottom of idol, one could reach from its top to bottom.

    Regards.
