Doing everything in ones power to disenfranchise election results from heavily black counties and not even bothering to disguise it is very telling of the entire Republican Party.

Now that the Electoral College has voted, we can relax. Trump, in a slightly more empathetic version, is reelected:

Laugh when someone calls Trump actions as mentally retarded. Say well-said... well-said. Then, apologize and go on to become the VP. No grand protests from advocates of the mentally disabled.

An 83 year old op-ed writer publishes a piece that says Jill Biden should stop calling herself Dr. And everybody up in arms.

The New York Times has been referring to the Secretary of HUD as Mr. Carson. Ben Carson used to be a pediatric neurosurgeon before he left that and got into politics, and as he is no longer doctoring, NYT was quite right in referring to the secretary of HUD as a "mister". [Weirdly enough surgeons in UK who are "fellows" of the Royal College of Surgeons, are also called Mister and not Doctor. These fellows (even girls among them are fellows, but not called "mister") have the initials FRCS behind their names on their calling cards].

Most doctoral dissertations are usually forgotten things, exist only in Microfilm format, and never purchased by anyone beyond the very close family members, just to see if their name is on the acknowledgement page. However, I expect that this Jill Biden [Jill Jacobs-Biden is the actual author name] dissertation would have many orders. Thanks to that Joe Epstein of the WSJ OpEd page. The Donald started the artful dodge of diversions to take away the national attention from problems that really matter. This doctor Jill matter is a gift to the incoming administration. This may be the first of many to come.

Wives are often the ones to start packing earlier for a trip, move or anything. No different in the case of Melania Trump. I read that she started sorting what to take and what to leave  weeks ago. What a trip it's been for her! 15 years ago, their wedding guests included Elton John, Barbara Walters, Heidi Klum and the Clintons!

Years ago, in our extended family, there were always one or two people of both genders who would need a lot of training, instructions and warnings about how to talk, what to say/not say, before being dressed and taken to family functions. Once at the function venue, they needed a minder/chaperone near them at all times to prevent trouble. : ) Imagine being married to such a person with a twitter account, and in the public spotlight. Melania Trump gets 10/10 from me for her mostly peaceful 4 years in the White House. Plagiarized speeches, I don't care on the jacket, the ironical anti-bullying efforts... were minor distractions in her non-legacy-leaving tenure. One could almost use the word "dignified" to describe it.

When comparing her to other first ladies, I would account for the handicap of the kind of husband she had.

I totally agree. Melania had endured a lot. Hers is one of those marriages held intact by the cement called “ what would people say” . It may be a great relief to go back to private life.

She is a shrewd and calculating woman who has chosen this life for herself. She’s not some bechara whom unwittingly married an embarrassment and has no choice in her life. And she seems to like her husband just fine.

Recently I came across "Through most of history marriage has largely been a very transactional concept, even as recently as our parents’ generation.", and remember nodding my head in agreement.
Melania had made a bargain (also a prenup), and thought she'd get a wealthy fellow with typical problems of wealthy fellows that he'd keep private like other wealthy fellows. But NO!! He goes public, and puts her out to do quite a lot lot more than what she had bargained for. She should've read "The Art of the Deal", no ;-)?
There were speculations that she had renegotiated her prenup in order to put up an appearance for the reelection campaign. And now she ought to be relieved that she'd go back to her private life again.
I am not suggesting that the Pope ought to make her a saint. However, marrying a USC for a better life, getting a green card, doing whatever job that is feasible, having a baby, sending that baby almost every year to the old-country to get to know grandparents and the native language, waiting for the green-card to ripen into citizenship so that the new Citizen can sponsor parents, and then financing her parents' new house and life in America --- all might feel close to home for many on this forum. Even tolerating a marriage can go into that list, if that's what Melania has been doing with a costs-benefits analysis running in the background of her brain.
