    Rehashing the past and rehearsing the future are indeed the bane of our attempts to live in the Now. I have read this observation in many forms and my meditation app's narrator says this often. But, I have mostly thought of it as "our mind's tendency to rewind, fast forward.." Didn't think of it as our mind's ability to do those. The use of ability made me look at this simple truth in a different way.

    In fact, replacing tendency with ability in many such observations will alter how we look at them.

    Most likely, the above doesn't make much sense. : ) A random ramble. I am still amazed at how difficult it is to control the mind and make it stay in the Now for even a 5 minute meditation.

    True, true, true! Seeing more of the family all through the day has brought home this realization. A small comment about the lunch or the usage of masks or gloves made lightly by the other person, but beeg reaction is the cause of feeling hurt.

    Satya vachan.

    You are right about the tendency to rewind and fast forward. Most classify it as a tendency only. I classify tendency as a habit/nature that makes one to park our mind to rewind and fast forward all the time whereas I classify ability as an action intentionally carried out to rewind or fast forward. If tendency/habit is hard to change, ability of the mind is much more difficult to unlearn.

    @Viswamitra Viswa, I came across this simple yet profound quote recently:

    "Being on a spiritual path does not prevent you from facing times of darkness; but it teaches you how to use the darkness as a tool to grow."
    -- Sadhak Anshit

    So well said, no?

    @Rihana,

    Very well said. In fact, one needs a spiritual outlook to gain lessons out of dark periods. There is a story in Mahabharath that Lord Krishna told Arjuna that once Sarayu river couldn't find its path and hence decided to flow underground when Arjuna visited Dwaraka. Why He would tell that story for no reason? When Pandavas encountered their Wax palace (which was built specifically to kill Pandavas) was lighted by the order of their cousins, Arjuna relayed that story to his brothers indicating that they should escape through the ground instead of putting the fire off to escape. That connection can be made at a critical juncture only with a spiritual outlook. Moreover, Arjuna had the skill to put of the fire with one arrow but he realized that would indicate that they escaped and their cousins' search for the Pandavas will continue.
