My niece has posted a pic on FB and it took me back to a memory when she had come to my place last year.

I had taken her to the mall and showed her pretty clothes.Usually..friends and well wishers appreciate me for my dressing sense and so I thought I can help her.

Interestingly..she dissed everything I showed her and made faces of dislike :)

I let her chose and finally she brought a white very loose top..it was just plain white and I personally did not fine anything appealing but she said it was so good.

Also, few other clothes which was quite fine.

I have seen many teens in tank tops and really torn jeans..I am all for torn jeans and some look great, infact even the ones I do not like look great when the teenagers carry it off with confidence.

They usually do not go for jarring clothes or too much designs..Even I do not like too much designs in clothes but the teens clothing lack elegance however they have a lot of style!

I am just fascinated by their dressing sense. The way they see things..

How do you moms feel when you see your teens taste in clothes?

    just a fun thread..

I think it is just age. My daughter is too little and i do not have any kiddo with this age in my knowns but i see kids in their teens and i remeber my growing years and my sisters.
Here in US and now-a-days, it all about what A& F/Hollister sells, no matter how much quality or torn they are. Kids find it hep.
Slouchy sloppy look is what they go for. It is all about age. As we grow, we like to be more fitted and glamour wear. We go for expensive but quality clothings. So let them be kids.
I know when my kiddo will ask for strappy wears, it will give us mini heart aches each time, but its part of parenthood.

I have seen girls I knew as toddlers grow into young women who carry themselves with so much confidence, and have a sense of personal style. Though like you, I also feel there is less elegance in the clothes that teens wear. Especially the trends that last only a year or two.

What fascinates me is that the ones who wear quite revealing tops and really really skimpy shorts, and seem to spend hours on hair and all, they show up in the yearbook as valedictorians. My Indian brain still finds it hard to digest this juxtaposition.

Amazing to see some Indian girls who dress up in traditional clothes for festivals, and who are talented dancers, have fancy Arangetram on a Saturday, and then Sunday we see them in Starbucks wearing the skimpiest clothes and settled in a prime table spot for the day. And then two years later, we hear they got accepted into Georgetown, Rice and other top universities. : )

Usually in their age they don’t look for elegance but look for style and fashion. To be honest, I think most of them look great in their dressing as you said, they have the confidence to carry it. I’m actually very happy to see it as I’m glad we don’t see girls being less confident these days. Especially when I dare minority races dressing up well, like Indians. I’m glad to see(or think) that their parents are accepting of it as well to allow everyone to discover themselves.

When children eat nutritious food, and live in loving and reasonably affluent families, they have a natural confidence about life, as well as have the well-fed body to carry off a torn ("distressed" is the term, I think) clothing as a fashion statement.

A poor desi teen with sad eyes, sunken cheeks, and scrawny body, would own the body language of being out-of-luck as well as look poor in torn clothing. No fashion statement at all. Like the song would say "... if they don't have bad luck, they'd have no luck at all".

Poor children want to wear clothes with no tears, wealthy kids want to wear distressed clothes to look cool. Wealthy parents ought to shop Goodwill and Salvation Army Stores for their children, and donate the savings to buy winter jackets for the poor children in Chicago. Parents can let their children do the contributing, and call it a teaching moment.
