The art and craft of Positivity.

'A glass half full or half empty' as a phrase has taken many rounds after it was first uttered by someone not known. No one can say for certain when this phrase was used the first time. Half-full indicates optimism and half-empty pessimism or positivity and negativity.

I have a different take. The person considering the glass half empty will try hard for full glass while the one considering the glass half full will remain contented and never will have a full glass and hence a not a fighter.

Positive people are not affected by defeats. Or they do not accept defeat. Accepting a defeat may be a sign of weakness. They may not try again and move on to another project or may be satisfied with half-full glass.

Negative people accept defeat but will not settle for half-empty glass. Someone said he did 1000 times wrong before he could do it right. Accepting defeat gracefully motivates for trying again.

Positivity is an art and a craft. The mastery in these can hide all failures. All one has to do is keep a brave face.

Both positive and negative people may go to the bar to lessen the burden of failure but the first will be branded as brave and the second as defeatist and depressed.

Negativism is not defeatism, not trying again is. Positivism is not bravery if not accepting defeat.

Life is not all bed of roses. It has its ups and downs. We can't change everything for our choice. We have accepted our limits and accept reality. This is not negativism.

Getting up early in the morning and taking a vow to be positive, think positive, act positive.... is not positivity.

Positivity is navigating your way out of the mess around without harming yourself and others. Positivity should be an instinct and not a cultivated art and craft.

:hello: I like the new definition of positivity that comprises acceptance of defeat and to keep trying at it again and again Like Alva Edison.

Thanks dear. Many a times we drop out after failures for fear of what others will think. It may also be because of lack of self confidence.

    Dear Hariji,
Positivity should be an attitude. Not the end of doing things. If we stop after seeing half full glass....nothing works. It puts a block. Our line of thinking should be "It is good to see a half glass, let me go further and make it full."

Positivity is a choice. Train your mind to see the good in everything. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.

Yes, Syamalaji, that is what I wanted to say. I remember an incident of my working life. The company invited a consultant on positivity and motivation expert. During the course his discourse, one of my colleague asked something which the consultant did not like. He told him your mind is full like a glass full to the brim and anything poured in will spill.
If I take that as a hint, there is no use having a glass full. It is better to have a half empty glass.

A fine analysis! A must introspection for every one.

we cannot set aside 'negative thinking'or
'pessimism' branding it as an undesirable
    attribute.
I fully appreciate ' Dream Big ' theory of
Dr. Abdul Kalam. Pessimism is stated to
stand in the way of dreaming great.
People with rosy outlook sometimes become
over confident , refuse to see within and
    overlook the emergency threats.Pessimists
with their expectation set at a lower level
    get prepared for eventualities and
    disappointments.
Practically pessimism has a decisive role
in crisis management in business, disaster
    management during natural calamities,
dealing with Railway and Flight accidents.
Not to talk of bear trends in stock markets
and the importance of Intensive care units
in hospitals and ambulance keep up .
    Essentially importance of these things
    can never be under emphasized.

We all experience negative thoughts at times, and we
have been accustomed to treating them as a bad
things that should be fought or avoided, or that it is
a sign of weakness. As a result, the way we deal
with negativity is often accompanied by being angry
with ourselves, which makes these negative thoughts ,
hold us back by keeping us “stuck in our own heads”,
without the ability to move forward. However, you’ll be
surprised to learn that it is these “negative” thoughts
that can teach us some very important lessons,
and our fear of negativity is preventing us from
learning these lessons. Next time your mind wanders
into the “negative zone”, don’t try and shove them
down, and instead use them as stairs to climb back up.
The anxiety and fear caused by 'negativity'
make us more responsible and keep us
    prepared for any eventuality.

Falling into familiar holes doesn’t become less
    painful

The best way to deal with such “holes” in your life is
made out of several stages: Covering the hole if you
can, finding a way around the hole while it’s still there,
and keep looking forward to avoid falling into that hole
(or others) in the future. Instead of blaming others
for your predicament, take responsibility for what
you can do differently and do it.

Negativity turns you into your own judge, jury,

and executioner. As proof, we still remember certain

mistakes we’ve made in the past that others have

    already forgotten.

Try reminding yourself that in any negative situation,
some things that you’re not aware of and are
beyond your control may have taken place.
Remember that nobody is omniscient, and
    that’s perfectly fine.
Every negative thought provides us with
two options: fall into despair or learn and grow.
Sadly, most of us choose the first option.
In order to help yourself see the situation in a
broader perspective, assign every negative thought
a couple of new friends: factual proof, and a
    different interpretation.Train
yourself to try and come up with an alternative,
    logical interpretation of the situation.
It might just be the right interpretation after all.

Every optimistic thought has an inbuilt
    pessimism beneath.
A hopeless pessimist only foresees what
could go wrong, and has a plan B ( after failure)
but, a practical pessimist is a cautionary
optimist, who foresees both the good and
bad outcomes and has a plan B(if it goes wrong)
and a plan C(after it goes right).
I personally feel that 'hope for the best and
prepare for the worst' should be the basic
    principle .
( Not to discourage people who like to be 100% positive)

The glass analogy doesn't work here. Even a person who sees the glass as half full will try to fill it up. In my view, positivity is more than survival instinct. It is the stoic mentality of remaining unaffected both by ups and downs and steering clear of both euphoria and depression.

Thanks for a great write up on the subject.
Negativity is a situation where one is somehow convinced that nothing is going to change, at least for him. Having this attitude makes him take no further effort. This is almost the same as a positive person finds sees a rainbow in everything. Both are extremes and should be avoided. There will always be things we cannot change and things we can. All depends on the efforst we make.
