So I asked the phamily to guess Kamala Harris' middle name. : ) H started off with various south Indian names. Then:

Me: Here's a hint. It has four letters.
    DD: Sree?
Me: No. Another hint: it is a common "suffix" for female names in India.
    DD: Kaur?

H and me rofl at the ABCD's technical-accuracy in that guess. : )

Me: No. Guess again. Common suffix for female names.
    DD: Bala?

    H and me more rofl. : )

Me: No. It is to do with "goddesses"...
    DD: <finally> Devi?

    Kamala Devi Harris.

That’s not the same as a freedom fighter.

Just like Barry Obama, most of the first gen native born children have very culturally "different" foreign middle names. The Tamil people like Gopalan Shyamala may have also suffered through the surname, first-name, last-name, family-name confusion in her early days in the United States. G. Shyamala might have been the name of the girl in the school attendance register, alphabetically listed under "S". If Shyamala had returned to India soon after her divorce, [after all, she had a family with the means to take her in, no babysitting difficulties, and connections to find her excellent academic positions], Kamala might have gone to a school, with the name H.Kamala on the school register. Not many would really bother to know what that "H" stands for.

why has "H" not been talked about a lot, or mentioned much, in all this post-election hungama ?

Election has already been won. So no more need for H(African American).
Harris and Shyamala divorced each other when kamala was 5.
So both girls were mostly raised by the Indian mom.
Harris, the Jamaican-born economics professor expressed regret that the custody battle brought an end to the contact with his daughters. He has stayed out of limelight

Here is one other thing that the native born children of Indian parents can/might say (as if it is a handicap):
In Kamala Harris' memoir The Truths We Hold, Harris actually spoke about her parents' relationship, saying, "had they been a little older, a little more emotionally mature, maybe the marriage could have survived. But they were so young. My father was my mother’s first boyfriend." The friction in the family was a source of worry for her, including when she invited both parents to her high school graduation, "even though I knew they wouldn’t speak to each other." source

my thoughts exactly. being in canada, i don't care much for U.S election but it was fun to watch donald duck loose and I just take it that a woman has become a VP and proud of it. leave the rest aside. Not sure if I like her that much too. She does sport a fake smile all the time. She mentioned chithi just for election sake to get popular and to get votes, that's it.
