You said that if you have something in the constitution everything will be fine I am saying that words will be words until it is implemented in a way that it works for everyone and not for a few.

I did not say that. I responded to your statement that the constitution framers put Tamilians at a limbo because they didn’t preach non discrimination. I pointed out that they did.

You can’t fault people who wrote the document 70 years ago for what current day right wing Governments do.

@Minion - I don’t live in India anymore so I have no idea what made you start this(assuming it’s the new education policy). Anyway, I had some free time after many many months and I decided to spend it here. It was really fun having this back and forth with you. It gave me a good break from the stress of everything elections. Thank you for that.

Btw, seems line you live in the US too. Hope you’ve voted early. Hope everyone reading/browsing/silently reading have all voted. A lot depends on us showing up, so don’t sit back.

    See you around!

When the Brits left, they left behind Princely states, and Administrative region states. The Madrasi's (SI's) of the constituent assembly of India were all somewhat cosmopolitan in outlook. None of the popular nationalist elements of the individual regions of that time were present in that scheme. The turmoil after 1950 is what resulted in the reorganization of India into Linguistic States. SI's may have read about the breakup of the Madras Presidency to create Andhra State. Did linguistic jingoism on all sides create the reorganization, or did the reorganization increase the LJ'ism is still being discussed everywhere.

IMHO, if states were recognized as belonging to a federal republic, and hence possess the rights to self-governance, all of them would get along just fine. Self-preservation, improvement motives will make individuals do or learn whatever is profitable; no need for the government to intervene and engineer a cultural change.

I have to respond to this. I live in Texas. So it’s a resounding Nooooooooooooooooooooo. Even today our state reps are campaigning asking us to vote Red so Texas doesn’t become California - that nasty blue vile state. No. I think one rule for every state is better.

You probably meant one rule for all states. Anyhow, in all Federal Union governments, the central/federal/union government has to have ONE rule for ALL states.. This is precisely why Tamil should not be imposed on non-Tamil units of the federation as a federal policy; and it would apply to Bengali as well. If at all the Federation needs a common language, English or Swahili for all states would be fair to all states in India. And that common language can be used in all bilateral or multilateral relations within the federation.

The following is useful to understand what Items are under the control of the Federal govt, State Govts., and Both.
    Union List - Wikipedia
    Concurrent List - Wikipedia
    State List - Wikipedia

@SGBV just as with the SL Tamil issue, the feelings on the ground can be very different from the view far away. And we all know the feelings in the ground is what matters. The depth and complexities can only be told by those who experience / or are impacted by it. The rest is just an opinion. You have to listen ( not just hear) to those impacted to get to know the realities.

I am fluent in 3 Indian languages including Hindi and Tamil. I can manage conversational level with another two. And 4 of those languages I learnt not in school, but through community , and based on need. So this isnt about how hard it is to learn a language or understanding how useful it can be in life.

If you care to really educate yourself on all sides before passing judgement , please do read up a lot more.
Some Q&A for you if you are interested
Can you be Indian if you don't speak Hindi? All FAQs answered

Incorrect. In south, English is used as a connecting language. and widely is a questionable term is 40 % considered widely ?

Well a lot of Tamilians I know who have move out of the stage either from childhood or in adulthood, are fluent in Hindi or have atleast managed to pick up conversational Hindi.

That's right. And extrapolating it to a wide population based on anecdotal experience is plain wrong.

Of course we can. We do. And we will keep learning. Just dont stuff it down our throats is all we ask.

Exactly, you dont need to but you want to. That is choice that one should be able to make!
What if it is decided since Hindi is a common language to many south asians, all your official UN work in these regions will hence forth be done in Hindi? Now would you feel the same?

There are South Indians who learn Hindi in school as a second language instead of their mother tongue. That is sometimes the price of promoting a language at the cost of another. Promote Hindi by all means , dont impose and dont insidiously replace an existing living regional language with Hindi - that is all we ask.

Honestly Bollywood ( with all its flaws) has done more to promote Hindi in South than the Indian Govt

Edited to correct some misinformation. Pls do check out this article too to understand why what we mean by imposing Hindi
