The problem is why is TN targeted with HINDI why can’t TN do the same by writing the signs in UP or Bihar in Tamil?

    Besides english and Hindi,
    Languages
included on the panel are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu
In a central government press made item - one can find all these languages on an article that is widely circulated in India.

    Yes you guessed it correctly.
This subject reminds me of the struggle I enjoyed in learning speech in Hindi in a snippet in the link

    Disintegration On National Integration Desideratum

A child can learn according to child psychologist more than half a dozen languages at a time. Let us strive to make indian official languages all of it compulsory for entire indian union and devise methods to issue passports in English plus IN THE mother tongue/language of PP holder choice.

When we go to any city in India we find name boards if the shops with address phone numbers appear at the foot of it. Before linguistic divisions, many name boards carried address with street name in English and local language. After son of the soil theory gained momentum and Hindi/English deletion from boards initiated by political parties, now in new cities one can find name boards written only in their local language. In Mumbai bus numbers too written only in Marathi.

    Just my two cents.
    Thanks and Regards.

Ummm... so your problem is not that the sign boards are in 3 languages, but the fact that it is not only in Tamizh. While I believe that it is necessary to have important Governmental forms be in the regional language also, for the benfit of the local population that is actually using the forms., I believe the use of a language like Hindi in addition to English and the regional language is absolutely necessary for convenience and is definitely advantageous. While Hindi is NOT the National Language, it was definitely adopted by the constitution as an official language, probably because a language was required for the unification across the length and breadth of the country and we cannot deny that Hindi is definitely more widely spoken/understood than any of the South Indian languages.

It is one thing to insist that Tamizh also be prominently featured within the Tamizh Nadu state, but entire meaningless to take a stance against just mere presence of Hindi.

The fact that only TN seems to always be up in arms about some Hindi imposition, it seems more like a political ploy of the Dravidian parties and other fringe groups than any meaningful or reasonable criticism against the presence of Hindi. The NEP 2020 allows for more fluidity in the 3 language policy and no where does it state that Hindi is mandatory, but the TN politicians are opposing that too now! Like the Eezham issue, I don't think this Hindi opposition has provided any meaningful ammunition to political parties for electoral gains. Times have changed. Idiots like Seeman who make grand statements like "Tamizhan dhaan aalanum" etc. etc., I hope they never win an election. They have no capability to democratically win an election by providing feasible practical manifestos and instead try to rake up stupid emotions by hailing terrorists like Prabhakaran as some hero and milk imaginary issues like Hindi imposition.

BTW, I am a born and bred Tamizh pen, who is very fluent in spoken, reading, writing of 2 other Indian languages in addition to Tamizh.

ETA : Meaningless opposition points like it is a burden on children to learn an additional language basically goes against everything that educators believe. To tap into potential of young minds as early as possible to teach them as much as possible.

@peartree Hindi and english are not the only official languages. there are 23 official languages including tamil, kannada, malayalam, telugu etc. India is a country of unity in diversity, which means staying united irrespective of the differences in language, cultures etc. Keeping one language in higher pedestal is totally unfair for other languages and kills the unity. Have you ever given a thought about how hindi became widely spoken? by slowly making it a third language and gradually forcing it on people. For convenience sake only english is made the official language. So why dont each state speak their own language and when interstate people meet or for official purposes use english as the common language and why should the language of one state be given the link language status. Some states lost their regional langauage totally by the hindi slow poison (google for examples)which is why thamizh people want to nip it in the buds.

Can you pls explain why? If this is not done then Thamizh and other regional languages will face the same fate of some north indian languages. Initially those states would have thought in the same angle as you and thats why those are dead now. There is a saying in thamizh which says"இருக்க இடம் குடுத்தா படுக்க பாய் கேப்பானாம்" This is the reason why thamizhians are vehemently opposing the language.

The draft said it was mandatory. When oppositions came from few states the CG brought this clause. Okay let hindi not be compulsory but three language formula is compulsory which is indirectly forcing hindi on non hindi states. How so is not very difficult to guess. Because we will not have that many teachers for other languages in non hindi states. To have come up to this situation is itself a shame. Think of how it happened. And whats in thrusting hindi indirectly even after receiving oppositions. Language is an important identity. How can CG deny it to the people?

For you may be it is meaningless. When year after year hindi imposition threats came my daughters school came up with the idea of compulsory hindi. I saw firsthand what my daughter went through. To quote one example like hindi there are no gender in Thamizh for inanimate things. Usage of past tense. Too many sounds for each of the alphabets. Sometimes the verb takes the gender of the object and sometimes the subject. When to use which is not clearly defined. I can quote so many things. When she got low marks she got so demotivated. Its not just my daughter, many students in her class faced this. After concerns were raised the school dropped the idea. Just take the CBSE hindi book and you will understand what I am saying.

Its very easy to see things in face value. Language imposition is much more than just learning an additional language. Always when something is kept in a higher pedestal superiority complex will set in. How do you think then so many people of our country stupidly believe hindi is the national language. I have heard enough from NRIs that they were asked how come you say you come from india but dont know hindi? In our own country we will become refugees if this isnt curbed. I dont believe in thamizhan aala poran sentiments. Aala vendam but every citizen should be treated equally. Every state be treated equally. evry language and culture be treated equally. Thats the very basis of our constitution.

    @peartree

If you don’t understand the real meaning of official language you should educate yourself before you make a bold statement.

What is an official language? Genuine question. Is it some kind of "recognition" a language gets in the constitution?

Not picking on the language but these are the lowliest jobs in the state. How many tamilians want to sit in the hot till booths? Only Bengali youth want to do this work. They are not Hindi btw, they are Bengali speaking in Hindi.
Same is the case with workers in the service apartments. Even in local hotels, they’re employing Bengali youth to serve. If you drive through Coimbatore and stop at Annapoorna for lunch, all the workers there are Hindi speaking Bengali or Assamese or Oriya youth. No locals want to do these jobs. The same issue exists across the border in Kerala too. These are cheap imported laborers. They work ungodly hours in horrible working conditions. They live in packed accommodations provided by the employer and are made to work 12-14 hrs days with a paltry wage. You can’t expect these people to also learn the local language after going through what they go through. These are not government jobs. What are you referring to by government jobs? There are two kinds - central and state. Central requires Hindi and state requires the local language.

English used to be the official language in all the British colonies. When India attained freedom, anti English sentiments were high. The constitution got written in Hindi - a widely spoken language in North India. Everyone probably wanted an Indian language rather than the Queen’s language to be given preference in post independent India. There was not any one language that had the majority but Hindi being majorly used in North India got picked to be the language the Indian constitution was written in. It was also written in English to ensure the global community could read it.

The reason Hindi came about is so that the Indian culture didn’t get washed off after a century of British rule. It was an anti British, pro Indian culture sentiment that brought about Hindi in India. Especially for the purpose of writing the Indian constitution. The writes of the constitution were well versed in English but probably chose Hindi for it to be India’s own constitution that every Indian can embrace. It became the central government’s official language of communication probably for similar reasons. I believe it was done to prevent doing it in 23 different languages. The states still use their own languages. Go to Karnataka or Kerala or Tamil Nadu to a sub registrar’s office and all documents are in the local language.

The jobs these migrant workers take up don’t need them to learn the local language they usually employ them in cleaning or cooking in hotels, they don’t employ them to take orders from customers.

The issues you mentioned regarding the working conditions etc there is exploitation and it is widespread all around the world look at the un documented South American workers in USA; The bank that gives out millions of $ to Vijay Malaya will be patient but when a farmer does not pay a single installment they will be happy to reposes his assets. Let’s not deviate from the core topic.
