The concept of pushing Hindi down the throats of TN people has been going on for a longtime be it BJP or Congress party it does not make a difference the agenda is the same push Hindi on the Tamil people, it is just mindboggling that a common thing like the signs on the railway station and the railway tickets has to be in Hindi but why ? TN people who can read and write in Tamil become illiterate when they get an Indian passport because all the contents in the passport is in Hindi and English. Why can't it be in Tamil and English ? There are thousands of examples. Will there be an end to this abuse by the central government or will this abuse continue forever ? The TN government has become a puppet and does not voice any concerns.

Learning a new language ? How about Kazhak ? They had switched from cyrillic to latin script to make it easier also. Latin script is already used in a lot of Bollywood/Tollywood/Kollywood dialogue notes for actors to practice and produce onscreen.

Check this out: No Hindi for Bollywood stars - Times of India
MUMBAI: It's a paradox that's indicative of an emerging trend in Bollywood - the country's pan-Indian film industry may make its movies in the national language but prefers to have its scripts written in a colonial one. In other words, no Hindi please, we prefer Angrezi.

A veteran writer, who began writing scripts in Urdu around three decades ago, says that around 90% of the scripts written today are in English for the convenience of the new breed of urban-bred stars who are uncomfortable with Devnagri. "Hindi nahin aati hai to koi baat nahi, aaj kal to sab Angrezi bolne wale actors hi hain industry mein (It's ok if you don't Hindi, these days all actors in the industry speak in English only)," he says.

the following is from: Opinion | Hindi cannot colonize the South because it lacks value
The people who want Hindi to be the national language wish that the South agrees to be colonized by the language. Then one half of India will not be so foreign to the other half, and a nationalistic Indian Prime Minister would not have to, absurdly, speak to the poorest Tamilians or patriotic space scientists in English.

But then, people do not surrender to a language to be “unified". People learn languages that are useful. What is the use of Hindi? What are the rewards of learning Hindi?

Guess who surrendered to Hindi when it appeared to have a lure? Rajinikanth. He was willing to act as the hero’s sidekick in Hindi films so that he could have a shot at Mumbai’s film industry, which was at the time more lucrative than Tamil. So did Kamal Haasan, another Tamil actor. A language does not conquer through war; it slowly encroaches through rewards. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, who failed in their efforts to become Hindi stars, today condemn Hindi’s attempt to trespass into their fiefdoms. This could be because that language was never useful to them.

Thats a oxymoron statement people learn languages out of their own will The question we are trying to address in this discussion are the following

it is just mindboggling that a common thing like the signs on the railway station and the railway tickets has to be in Hindi but why ? TN people who can read and write in Tamil become illiterate when they get an Indian passport because all the contents in the passport is in Hindi and English. Why can't it be in Tamil and English ? Absolutely right! Learning a language is not an abuse, it is a good thing indeed.
BUT enforcing a new language on people most definitely is.

And if the honourable intention is to make people learn a new language, how about we do that in all states - In UP the sign boards and forms will be in Tamil, In MP, we can have it in Telugu, in Maharashtra in Malayalam and so on.
To make it more interesting we can make change it every five years , that way in our lifetime we can all be polyglots :)

If the above is the present status, then its not right.
Basic stuff have to be in English and tamil.

What kind of ignorant person writes articles like this, there is no national language in India, because of these ignorant writers, people who speak Hindi think they are superior.

Having a foreign language on a local sign board is to encourage tourism, and make money for the local merchants. Some US international airports have signs in Chinese, Japanese, Korean -- and some Asian cities have English in their bilingual signs.
The passport issue is quite genuine. India can easily print passports in one customer-requested local language plus English to help out for immigration controls at destination. India should recognize, and celebrate their own diversity, and not contrive to kill it. There is money to be made in maintaining the difference, and selling to tourists who come to see/experience something different.

The EuropeanUnion-27 countries have different languages, cultures, but one currency, a customs union and a single market. India's model is similar, with a much stronger federal government than what the EU has in Brussels. Our customs-union is weaker, because goods-lorries are stopped at the inter-state border, checked for contraband and duty imposed on declared goods.

EU's common language is described as "Bad English"--in India we already have this advantage. EU's passports are printed in two languages, one of them being English; this will continue even after UK stops being a member of the EU. Another "federation" of disparate cultures/countries, Russian Federation, has imposed the language of the largest country [Russia] on the rest of them, but continues to print their passports in two languages [Russian/English].

So when a Tamil speaking person visits UP they don't want to encourage tourism its only the states that fund the northern states have to encourage tourism ??
