    Return of the Gun-Different Takes!!!
Last week, I posed seemingly a very unique situation and sought advice. Got valued inputs, thanks! It read as follows:-

"Faced with a what should I do situation!!!
A friend of mine kept his gun in safe custody with me. He comes and asks for his gun. I see that he is not in his usual self and looks agitated and angry.
Should I return the gun to him"

    Summary of Suggestions received :-

*Return the gun to him but make sure you wipe the gun clean.

*Talk to him first, wear him out and then give.

*Say you don’t have the gun.

*Return the gun but alert the police and his family.

*Disappear from the scene and text him where the gun is.

*Do you have the permission for possessing a gun?

*Tell him directly that under the agitated condition he is, cannot give the gun.

*And the mother of all-what if the friend was SHE and not HE?

As pointed out, it could not have been a real situation. It was not. It is, however, quite likely to happen. It is always better to be ready with solutions. The situation and the advice have posed more questions. Let us assume that it is real. Here are the pointers that came to my mind.

    1. He is my friend and in his own and his family interest, I cannot return the gun to him unless I know the reason of his anger. After knowing the reason, if my conclusion is that the culprit must be punished, should he take the law in his hands? Bur I also know the case will be dragged on for years in the courts. And if the culprit is resourceful and well connected, chances are that my friend may be harassed and even put in jail on concocted grounds. Is street justice the only answer?

    2. His gun, in my possession, is his property deposited with me in good faith and I have no right to say no. But it is also true that we are noticing how often and how shamelessly properties deposited in good faith are being siphoned off. The banks are swallowing the deposits of the poor, the politicians are swallowing their own promises, and the Governments are gulping down the voters' confidence and not even taking a burp. Deposit is a deposit and deposit means trust, trust means truth and truth means Justice. Justice is imparted by the powerful and it depends on him to establish what is truth. What can the person seeking justice do? All what I have a gun but it has made me so powerful that it is totally up to me to return it or not. If he makes some fuss, I can even shoot him with the same gun. Our police force does it day in and day out and kills innocent people terming it encounter and all what they have is a gun.

    3. What if he is angry with me only ? It can be some misunderstanding! Somebody might have instigated him against me! Everything is possible these days! Almost everyday we get the news that someone has shot someone dead ! Someone has has left his party and joined the opposition party! There are cases of people making holes in the same plate they ate for years! Until yesterday they were talking of friendship till death and today are at each other's throat! I have lost count of all such happenings ! What if I return the gun and he shoots me? I will not be in a position to explain!

    4. It is also possible that he stole the gun from somewhere and kept with me as he knows no one will suspect me because of my past record! Agreed that I am considered as a very clean person but it takes no time to get discredited!

    5. It is also possible that the gun could have been stolen from my place ! What would be my reply to him ? Would he be satisfied with my statement?

    6. It is also possible that the police could have got some inking or hints or information and would come to my house to enquire do I have a license to possess a gun and how and from where I got this gun? I do not have any license to possess a gun. My whole life would get shattered! He could conveniently deny that he owns the gun! What would my wife and children think of me? Would not they question my ability to select friends?

    7. I should not have kept the gun in the first place! I should have kept a distance between friendship and illegal action.

    8. I think I should inform the police! I should alert the family members of my friend! I should tell them to take care of him as he is not in a good frame of mind. I do not know what they will think and how would take my informing the police? Besides, it is not safe to trust the police also!

    9. Having weighed all angles, I have come to the conclusion that I should talk to him. I should try to know the reason of his anger and troubled mind and jointly find out a solution. I should remind him of his responsibilities towards his wife and children, his parents and others. I should tell him to have faith on our judicial system! I should tell him, things are not that bad what we think! I should tell him we have an elected government ! I should tell him we have some honest and trustworthy leaders ! I should tell him we have courts we can rely upon! I should tell him there is media to support and reporters who are still free to say what they see and raise voice of the common man!

    10. Even after this if he does not calm down or agree to change track and if I feel that the culprit must be punished and that too instantly, so be it! I will walk with him for the sake of friendship! Street justice is not new or unheard of!!

There is one million dollar question though in this whole imaginary, but likely, situation! And that is would the situation be any different if the friend is SHE and not HE?

As the poser of the question has indicated, women, under the situation, simply sulk, eat chocolate and try to forget and forgive! They would never, in the first place own or steal or borrow a gun and even if they do will never keep with a friend and even if they do will never come to ask for it when agitated or angry. But then there are women who have rained bullets!!!

I am sorry to have dragged it too long and still no answer.

    Amen!!!

Yet another dimension. But during the intervening period, there would be news all around and fingers being raised at my friend.
