Yesterday my daughter reminded me that I hav ecompleted 50 yrs in Mumbai. I cant imagine that I have completed so many memorable years in Mumbai. I was in Hyderabad and when I was 22 yrs in 1965 in the month of August we came to Mumbai. In two days only I joined the Company which I got it through recommendation of my boss in Hyderabad , otherwise getting a job in such an International Company is not so easy. I had to travel from Goregaon to VT, first few days my brother came with me to leave me as I am not used to train travel. Once I got adjusted to train travel one day I forgot that he had also come and went straight to office , when he phoned forgetting that I told him I have come to office where will I go. That is Aamchi Mumbai we forget everything when we are travelling and our aim is at the destination. WE shifted many places. Had stayed inGoregaon, Andheri, some other place name I forgot inbetween Andheri and Sakinaka, Vadala, then after marriage Bhandup and Mulund. I have travelled in Best Buses, train, Contract Bus etc. First time when I came and when I saw BEST buses written in th ebuses I thought they are best buses and once when I was travelling to Worli , the conductor said kismat wale uthar jao, I thought only lucky people should get down :).

When I was in Worli could go to Siddhi Vinayak temple once in a while but after shifting to Prabhadevi and after I joined contract bus could go everyday . Also whenever possible we used to go to Mahalaxmi temple. Made so many friends in the train, contract bus , best buses etc. Many sweet memories, if I write it will run to pages

    Dear Viji aunty,

That indeed is a long time to stay in a place. I can say that I know the various places in Mumbai, thanks to you. I have never ever visited Mumbai, may be one time just as a transit airport. I do have friends and some family from there and everyone of them assures me that once you live in Mumbai, you will not like any other place. Must be true :)

I like Mumbai for various reasons but traveling by local trains is not one of them. In fact traveling by local trains at peek hours is so annoying in Kolkata or Chennai also particularly if you are boarding from in between stations. But if there is not other option, so be it. Mumbai locals runs on time and that is the bonus. I have travelled by locals but I had the choice of not traveling during peek hours.
I lived in Kolkata for 20 years, 30 years in Delhi and rest at various place in India. I can say that once you start living in a city or town or village, you start liking it.

    :hello:Sister @iyerviji ,

You & I had lived a great period of our life in commercial capital of India that is erstwhile Bombay now known as AMCHI MUMBAI.

I recall in another memorable post of yours in the link
    Memories Of Working Life
Posted on 31st Jan, 2019 you have narrated in delectable manner, your experience of golden years of your (working) life .

It stands out to me because, a post of mine in your above thread fetched me another award for month of FEB ‘2019. In that my response to your thread, you had stated that that feedback brought back more memories.
    • Local Train commuting bring to memory पाकेटमार, bhajans, difficulty in understanding for Hindi ignorant that Pavna, dade, adaiee, purso, nurso, puday chalk in best bus, all adds to experience.
    • My first Air Travel in Indian Airlines from and to was Bombay.

    • Sardar taxis plying with early morning Madarasi passengers from Dadar To Chembur duping with sleight of fingers dropping a tenner note in dim light under his feet - showing a tenner less when actually I had given them exact fare amount - all these my memories of Mumbai or Bombay.
    • Consecutive visits to Prabhadevi Siddhi Vinayak On Tuesday’s Between four and five am, fridays early morning to Mahalakshmi temple all were great.
    • A dhabawala left by mistake some one else lunch dabba at my office instead of mine. I emptied the dishes all vegetarian andin the top container of the carrier there was a letter written in Marathi. I called my steno to readand translate to me in English. She read “ when you return home pick up fruits and vegetables and ghee - with sweet kisses - love xxxx.” Steno smiled and left my chamber. I left that chit in that Dabba itself adding only a line “ thanks for delicious lunch. For Other items contact your hubby”
But then why made you leave Nizam place? You must have enjoyed a part of your prime there too visiting salar Jung Golconda Nagarjuna sagar dam.....wearing Narayana pearls...Ujjain sagar ...etc

I was supposed to alight regularly at a station on Saturday afternoons when it was half a day working for my spouse and I. One Sat, I just forgot and it was pre mobile era . I had almost reached the station nearer home ... had quite a time later...

Goregaon navrang cinema and AAREY milk colony are unforegettable with that bolly wood actors and actresses assembling for shoot in observatory post. That chilled bottled fresh milk with blue and green cap...a station before or after Wadala as local train approach commuters would wake up from their deep slumber - that zone reek with smell of dry fish and burnt oil...

We have sailed in the same boat. I too thought same way initially that they are the world best transporters. But I like the discipline and maintaining queue by public while boarding the best bus in city and suburbs as well. A friend of mine Forgot his Echolac office brief in top decker in best bus but very same day he got it back from best office at BB Dadar. So much for public & BEST.

I picked up functional Marathi largely from bus travel by B.E.S.T BUSES.

I WAS ON DEPUTATION during 1993-97 in BARC office just opposite that triangular park abutting the veer Savarkar marg. Those three years, BEFORE LUNCH I used to have SV darshan/ Aarathi.

Boarding & alighting in local trains in Bombay, Involves strategy both at terminus and at stations in between the termini. Less or excess push & pull in the crowd sometimes lead to disaster and pocket picking. I heard COMMUTERS used to keep their collected salary on their person within their underwear, briefs or vests. I learnt about automatic breaking of local train in case of motorman gets heart attack and the system with his hands linked to steering wheel , he would collapse on it and engine would come to a halt....

I was unhappy of my stay in the initial days at Delhi, Bombay and used to be homesick. Days without Hindu news paper, I used to feel miserable. But with few seasons living in a new place, one gets accustomed & gets acclimatised .

I love the Bombay I lived in that City for over three decades. I loved the way domestic help give bath and massage to infant babies. I loved watching the rich fisherfolk - the bold and the beautiful - I loved more of gujrathi sweets I loved the cosmopolitan atmosphere. I loved people multilingual there. The city that never sleeps.

But alas now in COVID time, East or West I consider Home in Chennai Is THE BEST.

I loved the Ganapathi Pappa Moria procession and the visarjun - the immersion of huge idols of lord Ganesha in Chowpathy & Dadar Arabian Sea.

    Dear Vijiakka,

55 years is a long time to live in one city and I am sure there are places you have not yet explored in Mumbai as yet. My stay in Mumbai was from 1992-1995 (just 3 years) plus visits to Mumbai on business. While I stayed in Mumbai, I worked in SEEPZ, Andheri, and lived in the Kandivli Lokhandwala complex. I used to drive from Kandivli to Andheri every day through RA Milk Colony. That is when I encountered riots after Mumbai Blasts. During my work, I used to drive to Nariman Point every week on business to meet Bank executives or other reasons. For pleasure, we have visited many places such as Temple in Chembur, Juhu Beach, Fountain area, Mahalakshmi Temple, Siddhi Vinayak Temple, Planetarium, Naveen Mumbai, etc. During 2005 floods, I was visiting Mumbai and got stuck in Santa Cruz area for 2 days unable to go back to our Taj Palace hotel.

We moved to Mumbai from Pune where we lived from 1988-1992.

:hello:Kya wah Taj comes to mind as I read the conclusion of your response.
It also reminds me the words of late dr. Kalainjar phrase effectively enunciated by late thespian Sivaji Ganesan in film Parasakthi “ VA ndhara I vazhavaikkum vaiyagamay nee ....Mariyadhu eppodhu?”
( what word in that dots - unable to recall)

Thanks for your feedback response put in succinctly.
But I wonder why OP had not recorded her response to my feedback here at #5.
    Regards.
    God bless.
Ps. Trust mr Jayaraman is progressing well.
