Sorry, but with India’s m(Known) cases of COVID 19 racing towards the three lakh mark only this story comes to my mind.

There are a lot of plague related stories including Albert Camis’ The Plague but this particular story suits the present condition and Indian mindset. It is the “Masque of Red Death” byEdgar Allen Poe.

When a plague called red death is spreading in his territory, a prince called Prospero takes many fellow aristocrats to an abbey which he thinks will be a safe haven from the plague and parties there even as people are dying in droves.

Prospero notices among the guests a figured dressed as red death going through the rooms. Annoyed he goes after it only to find that there is nothing inside the costume of red death! It was the plague itself coming to say hi to the prince. All guestsm drop dead infected by red death.

Prospero really symbolizes Indian mentality. For us COVID 19 is something that concerns others but not until and unless it hits you or someone close to you.

I remembered the story when Ms.Corona made her presence felt for the first time in my the colony with two cases, one of them in my block..

Everyone pressed panic buttons. So far COVID 19 did not prevent kids from playing in the park opposite my house and adults from organizing g gossip and Bhajan sessions. Now the park is totally deserted. You feel the pinch only when the virus hovers over your shoulder.

Why oily Indians? Donald Trump was long in denial over the virus and as a result US has the largest number of known COVID 19 cases I the world, at least the largest number of KNOWN cases.

For once Trump could be right when he says India could have more cases than it is apparent. Many have tested COVID positive but the testing levels in India, unlike US are quite low and the official figures could be just the tip of an iceberg. The situation could be much worse.

During the lockdown, I am reading a book called The Sixth Extinction the theme of which is the world has gone through five mass extinction of species so far and we could be going through the sixth. And who knows? COVID 19 could be the call to bring the curtains down on the human drama even if the curtains don’t fall at once. They could come down oh so slowly. And we could already be walking on the trail of the dinosaur.

I never watched the apocalyptic kind of movies, thinking it is too far-fetched. And now, it is all too real!

Hermitcrab, Here is a joke that has undertones of gravity. A signboard in a bookshop (or a library): '' POST APOCALYPTIC FICTION HAS BEEN SHIFTED TO THE CURRENT AFFAIRS SECTION".

The joke in Mumbai is 'Cyclone Nisarga practices social distancing from Mumbai.' And you are right, we feel the pinch when it is in our foot. The only thing positive about Covid in India is comparatively, high rate of recovery and less number of deaths.
Ultimately need for improving the economy will win over the need for precaution.

Comparatively high rate of recovery in KNOWN cases of infection and relatively REPORTED low death rates Hariji. I suspect this is due to less number of tests and if the test net is spread wider we will certainly have more cases and higher deaths will become visivble.

I am not sure what the current situation has taught us, but one thing for sure.... Never to take the simple things for granted....
Crossing the road and going to the park, giving a big hug to a friend.
I received some forward which says now the air is clean, unfortunately we cannot go out....
Suddenly as a family everyone was bonding, and we did realize that we had some innate talents which was honed in this time.
Yes, millions of life have been affected and things have gone topsy turvy and i feel it is the children who were most affected, because they could not step out and play, they couldn't meet their friends or teachers.
I hope this is not the future.
Stay safe everryone and take care.
I am sorry @HariLakhera for a long response.
    Regards
    Nandini

    Dear Balajee,

Even though tests have been ramped up in the US, still it is only for those who report high fever and symptoms of COVID-19. Other than those who are working in public contact functions and medical professionals, there are no repeat tests. At least the US appeared to have resolved the protective gear problem they encountered in March and April. President Trump told the Americans that the US has only 12 cases and soon it would be zero in March and now the US crossed over 2 million cases and still raising. The total death is around 115,000 and still raising as well.

One of the medical professional told me that the only way we are going to get out of this mess is by developing a vaccine that is given to the entire population in the world or everyone get it and develop their own immunity like flu. Until then, we need to keep our fingers crossed and lead a life of caution despite opening the economy to function.

    Dear Ma'am,
I hundred percent agree with you on the concern raised by you, particularly about children. As it is life in big metros has turned into match boxes called apartments. I remember, in a family living on the 24th floor, the maid was asked to take the kids once a day to the ground to give them a feel of soil. Now they are packed in room/rooms. No school, no interaction with peers. Pity. But it will also pass.

NO ONE WANTS THIS TO BE THE FUTURE. tRUE FAMILIES ARE BONDING MORE AND THERE'S LESS POLLUTION. BUT IN GENERAL SOCIAL EXISTENCE HAS GONE FOR A TOSS. AT A TIME WHEN WE SHOULD BAND TOGETHER TO FACE A COMMON PERIL, WE ARE BEINJG SWE[T APART. wHILE ONLINE LEARNING COULD BECOME THE ORDER OF THE DAY (E-COMMERCE ALREADY HAS). ;ET US SINCERELY HOPE DIRECT INTERACTIONS DON'
    T CEASE COMPLETELY.
