Asana To Stand On Head

    Do any of you perform Asana to stand on head?

    How do you learn this?

    Or does your body tell you to stand on your head when the time is right?

    For past few days I perform 108 Surya Namaskars slowly, and thoughtful to my knees (in 2 to 3 chunks daily)

    It would be lovely to master the Asana to Stand on Head.

    Please advise.

    I dont know how long you have been doing yoga. It has an order in a scientific way. We need to do poses that make us strong enough to handle difficult poses.

    The order of yoga poses should follow the movement and development of new born. First lying down with face up, then on side ways, then lying down with face down, Sit , then on hands and knees like crawling, then get up , stand, ...the poses we learn should be in this order. If not our body wont be ready to handle the next pose.

    If anyone is doing head down first, I will say they are completely illiterate on how it works.
    By proper order and practice, gain the strength to try sarvangasana, then only sheershasana.

    Please dont try head down pose without the guidance of a true yoga instructor. It will be damaging to your neck, nerves etc..

    Also I dont know why you force yourself to do suryanamaskar 108 times in one stretch.
    First do all the normal yoga poses in the order, as I mentioned above. As surya namaskar have poses from lying down to stand up positions, you should be ready to do that.
    If you are ready first try may be a few, then 8, 16 etc..increase the number slowly.
    Yoga gives relaxation and it should be done slowly. If you are getting pain or stress in body parts after each session then you are not doing it correctly.

    Also certain poses are not allowed based on health conditions or ongoing problems. For example, if one have glaucoma, sarvang asana is not good.

    So consult a true well experienced yoga guru before trying this. Good luck

    Oh my!


    Not a force. I used to do 108 Surya Namaskar in one sitting several years ago. However I did it too fast and I injured my already weak knee. I moved onto other strength-training and endurance exercise, i.e. bike, weights, walk 10,000 steps daily.

    For past few days I felt urge to do Surya Namaskars again ---- this time to protect my knees.

    Now I can easily do 54 Surya Namaskar and feel refreshed. But I'll re-evaluate how I am doing it so my body gets proper foundation and strength to do the asanas properly.


    Thank you for this advice. Certainly no force, only when body gently asks.

    Currently at home due to lockdown and curfew (riots are crazy!!!).

    I am googling "yoga routine for beginners" and I get numerous results --- lot of them seem "Westernized", i.e. I feel there is more to Yoga. Can you shed some light.

    Please recommend good websites to learn from (at least till its safe to venture outside)

    OP, I learned yoga from instructor in India long back. I am not an expert. The order I mentioned above is followed to learn it in systematic way. But many people are doing surya namaskar after warming up ( very important). I think there are many YouTube channels on yoga for beginners.

    May be going through that will give you a good idea on how to proceed. If one can do surya namaskar atleast 10 times per day. It will be highly beneficial. But head down poses need to be done carefully.

    Many yoga and fitness studios are offering Zoom instruction right now. You may be able to find one that offers beginners classes.

    I am gonna do Surya Namaskar very slow to ensure correct form and posture - then I'll work my way to 10.

    YouTUBE - that's a great idea!


    I like Zoom ---- hope the price is decent (with lot of people outta work nowadays).

    Dear @SuiDhaaga ,

    I would not advise you to try a head stand if you do not have a strong practice already. Even if you have one, it is best to do head stands with a teacher first - personal opinion of course.
    In many classes, after an intense advance asana practice of an hour or so, headstands are done.

    @DDream is right. There are sequences or steps to get to a headstand. Unless you have done it before, it is best to wait it now. And like @MalStrom mentioned, there are tons of practices on youtube and zoom classes of course. While there is more to yoga than what you see in the western world, it is all not too bad. One of the popular yoga teachers these days seems to be "yoga with adriene" Google search her and you will find a lot of youtube videos.

    Journals like yoga journal offer a 30 day challenge - a good way to start. I also like the way yoga journal describes each pose including the pros/cons benefits and other such details.

    Yoga international is another great resource.

    And always listen to your body, don't do anything quickly without a steady practice. You may be able to do 108 suryanamaskars but like i said earlier, we use suryanamsakaras as warm ups for actual asana practice. I think you are practicing the following sequence.

    I practice ashtanga yoga and our sequence is different and I tell you, I can just about do 10 without panting and to be able to move on to asana practice.

    I would strongly advice that you take classes from a studio first if you have not done so already. Hope this is helpful.

    I will search your posts for advice. And I'll go through the resources you mentioned.

    The Surya Namaskars I do go from bending down to plank. I avoid bending knees because somehow I injured my right knee and had to stop the entire routine.



    This does look relaxing!!!!!!
