Sharing this video which I came across in a YouTube channel. Mami talks a about cookware used for cooking in olden days. Kalchatti, eeya chombu, vengala panai etc
I follow her channel and watch her recipes for traditional dishes.

More than the recipe it's her talk which I enjoy the most. I call her Canada Mami .

One thing which is very interesting is her hair are natural ,not dyed . She could be 70+ ? But she doesn't have much grey hair. When she shared that in one of her videos I was so shocked. We are getting grey hair in our 30s and early 40s . Sigh!!

If you understand Tamil do watch the video. For non Tamilans ,sorry couldn't find the video with subtitles.

    Hi Anusha,

Our household regularly watches her YouTube channel. Her conversation with her son is very interesting. So much of old traditions and culture are shared in each video. In the video you have attached, she is sharing some scientific reasons for why those old traditions were followed. My wife used the Lead vessel for a long time until we lived in Pune where I worked for a premier R & D organization. Their many Engineers who worked as my colleagues used to come home for dinner and they told my wife not to use Lead vessel while cooking. That is when she stopped using it. But we did buy a heavy stone vessel recently and using it regularly.

Albeit the difficulty with the language, I can follow her recipes from the Canadian kitchen.

So glad for the adjustability of speed of the video -- I had to put the English preamble at 0.75 speed to catch what the chubby girl was on about in her rapid fire introduction.

Canada Mami is clear about the use of Tin rather than Lead in the rasam vessel. We can buy Brazilian kalchatti from Amazon. I have one, and it can go into the automatic dish washer as well. Much safer to put it in the dishwasher, because if it slips in a hand washing attempt, it can chip, or damage the sink.

Very true Vishwa sir. Her knowledge of traditions and culture is vast and good to learn all that.

That lead/tin vessel is debatable and we had some interesting inputs from Amulet in the thread Grandma's Rasam

I am yet to buy any soap stone vessel and try cooking in that. :) shall do it soon.

Yes I remember you sharing about this vessel in other thread.
Good to read it's dishwasher Friendly.
Ever since I purchased a DW my first question when I go to buy any vessel "is this dw friendly ?" but I'm yet to buy soap stone vessel and check whether that can be put in a dw..

I have watched many of her videos.
Whenever I see her it reminds me of my granny.
I remember trying a sweet from her channel and it was a huge hit!

Here is one girl doing a business of selling traditional kitchen vessels, with cc-English subtitles. Because the subtitles are "automatic", there are lots of obviously weird translations.

However, for people with language handicaps, this is much better than not having any subtitles.

Yes. That is the face that made me recall the other video...
In some thread, I had also asked Thyagarajan if the taste of Tin-vessel Rasam can be produced by just immersing a piece of pure Tin-foil (like a Tea-bag) while the Rasam is boiling in a regular stainless steel vessel ? One could easily avoid the mistakes of heating a vessel made of Tin, and yet get the benefits of nostalgia.
