    Hi All,

Have you extended your visiting parents B1/B2 beyond the initial 6 months? And did you get an approval?

From the USCIS website, it says it is possible to request an extension up to 1 year for certain situations. In my case, I want to avoid my parents 60/70s from going through the long plane travel given that they have heart condition + diabetes. They are traveling back in 2 weeks from US back to India and would need to be on a long plane ride for 20+ hours.

I spoke to a local visa agency and said we could file for an extension. And the new coronavirus situation might give them an extension. In the worst-case that it is denied, then they will still be in status if they leave the country as soon as we receive the denial notice.

    Any experience or pointers ?

    Thank you.

Yes you can apply for extension . In my opinion things are going to get worst in US. India will survive the virus because they are taking right measures by closing the borders and weather favors them . Government here is not ready to handle the crisis . If you are planning to extend make sure you get the best insurance available . Either way there is a risk involved . You need to evaluate and make decision accordingly.

Right now no visitor insurance is covering Corona. My mom is 69 and I got her a good PPO plan but I got notification it won’t cover Corona.

    Thanks,

We are in a similar situation. My parents are set to fly back in a month and we are thinking if it’s better to advance their travel. India seems to be much better prepared than US. They cannot get stuck here as they have some pending stuffs back home. All of us are leaning towards them leaving US ASAP.

You can apply for an extension. However if the extension is denied then not only they have to promptly exit the country but the existing US visitor visa becomes void. Your parents will have to apply for a new visa if they want to come back. If they currently hold a 10-year visa and have a good number of years left on it you might want to consider this point carefully. It might count negatively against them if they reapply.

Depends on when the extension is denied.

If the denial is received after the current I-94 has expired and visitors are still in the U.S., then all the above consequences apply.

If the denial is received before the current I-94 expires, there are no consequences other than the visitors have to leave as per original plan -- before the I-94 expiry date.

That's what I understood from this link:
    Visitors Visa Extension Denied

Here is some information shared by Indian Consulate General (in Houston) about Indian Nationals returning to India at this time:

All of this info has been super helpful for us. Thank you very much all! No decisions yet - talked to a visa agency, reading related USCIS extension forms and monitoring situation both in India and US everyday, still very conflicted on best course of action.

Ministry of Health Home | Ministry of Health and Family Welfare | GOI has the latest update on who is subjected to quarantine on arrival in India. New countries are included every few days:

    March 17:
Travel of passengers from Afghanistan, Philippines, Malaysia to India is prohibited with immediate effect. No flight shall take off from these countries to India after 1500 hours Indian Standard Time (IST). The airline shall enforce this at the port of initial departure.

    March 16:
    (i) Expanding compulsory quarantine for a minimum period of 14 days for passengers coming from/transiting through UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait. This will come into effect from 1200 GMT on 18th March 2020 at the port of first departure.
(ii) Travel of passengers from member countries of the European Union, the European Free Trade Association, Turkey and United Kingdom to India is prohibited with effect from 18th March 2020. No airline shall board a passenger from these nations to India with effect from 1200 GMT on 18th March 2020. The airline shall enforce this at the port of initial departure.
