Quite a few posts recently where members laid their hearts bare about their childhoods and their parents. This thread is also about parents, but a lighter one.

What are the acts of romance and care you recall seeing between your parents? Sure there were no greeting cards and Valentine's Day then, but each couple must have had their own ways of showing love and they must have had their own moments and version of romance.

So, share what you can about the little bits of romance, care, affection that you warmly remember from your childhood. Between your parents, maybe an aunt and uncle you remember fondly, or even your grandparents.

My father's care for my mother was well-known in our neighborhood. It was through little conveniences for her around the house. He built her a wall-mounted fan in the kitchen that was directed away from the gas stove. She read magazines and novels late into the night, so a reading light was installed and its switch dangled down along the wall to be right next to her pillow. And the enhancements he did to her sewing machine, I could write a manual on those. I was hopping mad when they gave it away to the maid-servant's daughter. I would have insisted it go to at least one of my cousins or nieces who would treasure it.

She came from a family that at that time was more affluent than the family she married into. Father did these little things to give her some comforts and all including neighbors and relatives used to pull their legs about it.

Oh my.. now the flood gates of memory are bursting open. : ) I am remembering some of the romantic gestures we saw in our neighborhood, and as kids we made fun of them. Aiyo.. we were so bad! : )

One upstairs neighbor aunty used to always say bye to uncle as he left for work, and used to lean across the balcony to see him till he disappeared on his cycle (later scooter) down the street. Rumor had it one day he didn't go to work, but still out of habit she came to the balcony at 7:30 am and started to say bye.. : )

Have you noticed how ladies would go into the kitchen to volunteer to serve the men seated for a dinner at some gathering or function?

Not all women did that. My mother would volunteer in such gatherings. And you can see that she is using the ladle to shove aside choice pieces of whatever in that dish she selected to serve. She would walk the aisle, serving everyone in the row, sort of nonchalantly, and very few (if any at all) would notice her sleight of hand when she serves her husband. And the husband would lookup and smile. This is almost like a card shark you see in western movies, serving Aces to self or a partner.

My parents weren’t particularly romantic, and my dad was infamously bad at understanding what my mom likes. In fact, he had never bought her a sari or jewelry until I was in high school (around 16). For her 40th birthday, he somehow wanted to get a piece of jewelry. And it wasn’t just any old piece- he wanted to get her a diamond necklace. She had mentioned that she doesn’t have diamond jewelry (it was all the rage with her friends). My dad took me to the jewelry store to get some pointers on what my mom would like. Last time, mom and I went, we liked a large necklace with diamonds (nothing understated about this). For someone like my Techie dad, who doesn’t believe gold or gold jewelry has any value, it was a big deal for him to buy her that necklace and gift it to her. Unfortunately, my mom is very inexperienced with receiving gifts (since she never got any), and didn’t react the way he had expected. Still, it was pretty sweet that he did something he was unaccustomed to for her.

The photo was such a colourful art. Like many of the jewelleries you make. So I was mulling over that.

And at the same time Rihana started this happy-light thread about parents. That is how I asked the question about someone else's parents. @Swetha52003 came right out and explained it!
