Sir the points you have mentioned are 100% true.
We are a generation(the one I belong to) where we are confused to accept the traditional stuff and also blame the modern lifestyle.

Shravs the magic is the juice which comes out of the leaf. When we eat hot food in banana leaf, it secretes it's juice which enhances the taste of the food. The same sambhar /rasam rice won't taste the same in a steel plate. :)

:hello: The reason could be in the heat transfer from warm rice and rasam to the green banana leaf.
    Thanks and Regards.

Tin (Sn) and not Lead ( Pb). The Malaysian metal is non-toxic, whereas Pb-Lead is a neurotoxin. When they use large brass vessels (brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, with ~1 to 2 % lead in the composition, and it needs to be covered up with Tin coating) for making Rasam in weddings, they use an internally Tin coated vessel.

A good experiment for a regular kitchen helper to do would be to make Rasam in an ever-silver (Stainless steel) vessel with a few pieces of Tin metal used as a boiling stones at the bottom. If the taste is equal to the Rasam made in a classic Tin vessel, you can get an innovation award.

    Dear Anusha,

That made a fabulous read! Grandmas I tell you, they are something else! I lost mine just a couple of years ago and like you almost all my actions and attitudes remind my siblings of her. It is so deep in fact that mom would get so irritated especially on days she had an argument with her - I was there always reminding her of her MIL. Yes, my paternal grandma! While you have acquired your grandma's rasam skills, I am blessed with bisibelebhath skills from my grandma - yes, it is fool proof and appreciated by one and all - those who knew my grandma and those who don't!

    Enjoyed reading it!

Fresh banana leaves are increasingly common now in Asian/Hispanic markets.
