This happened many years ago. I was madly in love. They say people do strange things when in love. At that point in life I had never visited a beauty parlour. No make up only ponds powder. No lipstick. A little kajal every now and then. I think some people can relate to that time in the late 70’s.

It was a habit for me to meet my boyfriend, every evening without fail. He was the most fashionable person and kept up to date on the latest shirts, shoes, goggles etc. Many girls would give him a second look if he was walking down the street. Whenever I felt his dress sense was off, I would mention it. He would just shrug his shoulders and say “What do you know about fashion”.

It was a similar day and he came to pick me up and as I got ready I noticed something amiss but just kept to myself. Climbed on his bike and we went for a short while and then stopped to get something. As I was getting off he said, there was something funny and he could feel the wind blowing into his eyes even though he was wearing goggles. I just looked at him and said, “your goggles does not have lens over one eye”. His face turned funny and he quickly removed it and said “Oh **** The lens should have fallen somewhere, could you not tell me”. I looked at him and said “I thought it was the fashion....” :openmouth: After so many years I still think of this and laugh. Whenever people say something about dating and how things changed after marriage I tell them this story and we laugh.

Many years have passed after this and we have come a long way. We got married. I met more number of people. I became more fashionable. My dress sense changed completely, started wearing trousers and jeans. Now a days I am more comfortable wearing jeans than with other Indian clothes.

Two years back we moved from Bangalore to Palakkad (Kerala) which is still conservative when it comes to dressing. Women are either in a salwar or their tradition white saree. It has got small hamlets and I stay in one of them. Today I had to go to the hospital. I dressed up like I was in Bangalore and went sporting a trouser and shirt. One more thing is I do not speak Malayalam. I converse with everyone in Tamil of English. So took my token and sat down. Opened my handbag and took out my glasses to read (Bi focal) But however hard I tried I could not read. I removed my glasses and Lo and behold it was missing one lens. I looked around to see if anyone was looking and put my glasses silently in my bag.

I laughed and thought the joke had come back to me. :roflmao:

"As you sow, so you reap" is the saying. I can understand your situation in Palakkad as they are very conservative. But isn't it interesting to see many actresses are from such a conservative society and set up a fashion for the entire country? If you announce what you faced while trying to read while in the hospital to your husband, the effect of karma may come to an end.

A lovable and natural narration.People living in glass houses should be careful. With a long list of Priyamani,Vidya Balan and Trisha to boast of ,hailing from palghat I thought things should have changed. My friend 85 shifted to Palghat to end his days after spending 60 years in Bombay and Chennai. He beat a hasty retreat with his wife[79],the lady being taunted that she was ignorant of palghat culture and customs.I have a big Palghat group here and if you meet them, wearing Jeans will look old fashioned.

    Dear sln sir,

True many actresses are from here. In Bangalore I would see many girls from Palghat. I worked in a company which was in a business park. It was like a mini fashion show you can say and the girls from Kerala there are high fashioned, like you said jeans would be for older people.

But it surprises me that these same girls when they enter kerala dress modestly, wear long skirts, cover themselves with a dupatta.

Sometimes when I travel from Bangalore to Palakkad by train i come across these girls and laugh at their double standad

My sambandhi ,8 years younger to me all along lived in Dubai, US and canada.I have never seen her wear a saree. She was always in pants ,or Jeans or rarely in Choodidars.
For the past six years they have settled in a village near Kumbakonam. She wears only 9 yds Iyer madisar daily while 75% ofthe entire village women have changed to modern dressing.
While she was in teens, all women wore traditional sarees and she was pointed out as the tallest girl with the shortest skirt.
What a transformation that has come over!I don't understand the psychology behind such way of dressing? It it a way to earn a special identity to oneself?

May be there is no psychology. Madisar makes it easier to stride (like pants that she used to wear), as well as, (perhaps) airy in the tropics. Foreign lived girls (of a certain older age) who had worked a long career, went on to wear pant-suits in their jobs during their later years (50-60), and they are used to taking longer strides. This body language projected confidence at work, as well in (many cases) protected them from suffering idiots. Eventually when they go off to retire in Darasuram or a place like that, they'd stick out in just the way they walk, even if their outfit blends in with the locals. Your sambandhi is likely very hard to retrain into an indian body language.

May be you are right partially. But I don't think that she takes long strides .They have become devoted to Swamiji and spend their time essentially in poojas and homas, giving no possibility of long strides.
