    Dear @HariLakhera

Being senior citizens we don’t want to get into unnecessary tussle with any of the higher ups. We have had enough problems with Aadhaar card, name change, adding mobile number to the card, then Pan card, and then Income tax. There is absolutely no regard for senior citizens anywhere.
With the advent of technology, yes operating bank accounts has become easier and we have shifted all our bank accounts to our nearest bank branches. But some of the old accounts which were opened decades back, At branches nearer to our then residence had to be closed, because of our age, long commutes and other problems.

Thank you @sln, for your appreciation. Yes, I have seen machines installed in bank branches to update passbooks, but not many of the downtrodden are able to operate them. Many times the passbooks are stuck inside the machine and the staff have to be called to get our passbook back. So much for the technology which sucks.

    Dear @jayasala42

This particular branch of the bank had just 2 seats close to the locker in charge. The place itself was very cramped, so no use blaming them for not providing seats. My daughter has an account in a private bank and her experience with the concerned bank is far from satisfactory.
My Servant maid who has a joint account with her husband, when she went to close the account, they wanted her husband also to be present. Her husband had vanished from the house long ago and now with all her other problems, she is at her wits end as to how to close the account and get back her money. Getting an Aadhaar for my bedridden mother was a Himalayan task, since nobody from the Aadhar centre was prepared to make a personal visit.

I have no personal grudge against the banks, but have just put down my experience which was not pleasant at all.

Could very well visualize and empathize with your plight ! Have had similar experiences when dealing with my pension paying branch regarding payment of dues of the pay commission etc. Continuous follow up did not yield any results for almost 6 months from a PSU bank only, and things got settled only when I mentioned my own position in my employment and took the names of the seniors in the Head office of the bank. You are very right, where they know you cannot fight back, service is definitely slack. We can take consolation in the fact that with core banking we have lesser reasons to visit the bank personally. However, over the years banking facilities have improved - but that too, more for the upper classes!

In case of closure of any joint account ( even if it is E or S) the bank needs the signature of both.otherwise one can withdraw and keep a min balance.
I know that many banks reduced the staff since on line transactions have become common.Seniors who are not familiar with on line transactions or are paranoid about OTP etc have necessarily to go to the bank and experience the discomfort.

    Dear @joylokhi,

When I had to close my mom’s pension account, after her death, even after providing all the necessary certificates for closure, to the bank at which her pension amount was credited, it took almost a year for her pension to stop. Even for that we had to surrender her passbooks, cheque books fill up two forms, a written form of consent and finally signatures of two witnesses. So much formalities for a closure!

    Dear @jayasala42
Thank you for your inputs. the maid servant’s bank account has become dormant because she has not made any transaction for quite sometime and as such to withdraw money she needs to submit a new KYC form which once again requires the signature of her runaway DH.

    :hello:@Agatha83
This your post of bitter exp in Psu banks might have transported many readers to their plights with banks in general as can be seen from the feedbacks.
    2. But I had a positive experience too with psu bank when there were no Indian private banks in 1980s.
    3. It is about a “good deed” done returning back to the doer after many years. I shall write & post as a separate thread.
    Thanks for the trigger.

    Regards.

I am slightly better off. My security calls me 'Perisu' (Old man!) The problem is that even the children in the compound have started calling me that! I often recall the fun I made of elders when I was young. Nemesis, you know!

    Another wonderful snippet @Agatha83 ma'am.

I could relate to what you had experienced. My dad had also spread his accounts between various public and private banks. When we had to close the accounts the private banks were efficient and polite; but the post office bank people were rude.

Considering it was a national establishment, the post office, my first words were in English informing my dad's passing and the need to close his account. English is one of India's official languages. Pat came the response, "talk in Tamil madam". For a moment I was needled to argue but due to lack of time and the need to get the job done, I bid as ordered.
The lady was dour faced till the end of the process. I came out of the establishment with my dad's money and a disturbed mind at the level of rudeness I experienced. It was very painful because we were already pained by losing a loved one and all we needed were some gentle interaction.

Similarly, one of our friends lost her mother and when went to ask for the death certificate in order to tie up many ends, they delayed and delayed and finally asked for a fat sum of money to process the papers.
No compassion for the bereaved family at all. :rage:

Yes ma'am. I actually stopped going to facebook and I also delete all the forwards in whatsapp without even reading them... because they are full of "do good" , "manitha neyam" and all sorts of lofty messages. It is easy to preach.

A fine post making us stop and reflect on our own behavior towards others, especially the elderly.
