Go to a good department store like Nordstrom and sample the perfumes. It is a very individual choice as fragrances will smell different on each person. Ask the saleswomen about any discounts or freebies. They always give me a ton of samples which I give as gifts in India.
The recent ones I loved are Gabrielle Chanel and Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb.

There are lots of brands and it’s so confusing to choose the best. You can try Dillard’s too. They offer coffee beans to sniff after each trial to remove the odour from previous ones.
    I loved YSL.

Many people react to scents as you do, to the extent that, in the US, it is now considered a tad bit outré to wear perfume when one might find oneself in close proximity to strangers. It is often highlighted as yoga studio etiquette for example. See here for descriptions of potency. A lighter scent might be to your liking.

No one can tell you which fragrance might suit you; it is a very personal thing. If you don't want to spend >$100 each time you buy a bottle only to find that you hate it, then you might try a service like this one - there are many. Cologne acts as a mood enhancer for me (a tropical bias, I imagine!), so I remain partial to the occasional dab despite the tyranny of the minority  , but I don't like 95% of the fragrances that I have tried. I discovered a few that I do like from such subscription experiments.

I have terrible perfume headaches too and Gabrielle Chanel has been working well for me. That price tag though!
The other one that I got as a gift and had worked well for me is Versace Bright Crystal Absolu. All others, I’ve nursed a headache from hell. I give away all perfume gifts.
I use the native fragrance free deo as a daily use deo. It has worked well for me.

    @Laks09
I always imagined you will have a closet full perfume bottle. :)
Since you always suggest in relationship forum replies, that OP should ask husband for some perfume as gift :)

Really? I better go back and look at those threads because even I don’t remember the said suggestions.

The suggestions above are my latest obsessions. Actually obsession was my go to one for a very long time. I do change fragrances every two/three years though because I get so bored of the same thing!

Btw, I buy DH’s perfume too because of my headache issue. Not sure why I asked people to ask for perfumes as gifts. Must have been before my headaches.

    OP,
since you have sensitive nose and get headaches, you can decide not to wear any perfumes. Since, we grew with perfumes being a fancy thing, doesn't mean one has to wear it. Anyways, trends are really changing towards 'hardly there' kind of fragrances.
I hate the smell of detergents too. In US, since we are indoors, any smell you are carrying can easily become overwhelming.
If going outside in US, I will suggest you wash your hair often, don't carry smell of food, wash jackets/ outerwear often, and wear minimal frangrance- that can be from your shampoo or conditioner, or moisturizer. Some very clean and minimal.
Now, fragrance is very personal- so go smell shampoos etc in Walmart, target to figure out what kind of notes you like. Notes can be fruity, floral, spicy, musky,
e.g. I hate fruity notes/ smell too candy to me.
Once you decide what kind of smells you like, you can look that kind of fragrance.
Learn at Walmart, but don't wear any cheap perfumes or gift it, it can be disaster.
Thanksgiving is here, and you will have a lot of deals on perfumes/ fragrance. Many of fragrance-only shops in mall, are owned by Desis, and they can help you.
    Good luck
