I am sure you'd already checked the meaning of the word in the dictionary. I find out that it is a word in Hebrew as well as Tamil:
Ilan (אילן in Hebrew) is an Israeli masculine given name and a surname which means "tree" or "oak tree" in the Hebrew language. Ilan also has South Indian language Tamil origin meaning “young” or “youth”. Variants of the name include Alon and Elon
A slightly differently spelled word, viz., Elan in English is much better in its meanings than the Hebrew word Ilan.

Elan is noun that means energy, style, enthusiasm, and connotes good health. Excellent word. This can easily stand in as a transliterated Tamil word. Sound out the words -- email, elan, iphone, ilan -- and you'd realize that the word with E at the beginning is also a proper English spelling for the Tamil word. And besides, in alphabetical order "E" would be ahead of "I", and it is our responsibility to give a boost in the queue for the child:smirk:wherever we can.

Thank you so much! I briefly thought of spelling it as Elan and then it missed my mind.

Elon Musk is a famous fellow in America. If you are interested you can go to wikipedia and read about him. I think his first name means "Oak tree".

I love oak trees, grand and majestic. I would totally use Ilan, if it means oak tree

Thank you! Not sure if it means oak tree. I was looking at it more from a literary Tamil name but in a bit modern context.

OP - orthogonal to your thread, but I don't know which side thread I should use to add something related.

Oh, Amulet! (Hi after a little while! :)) My name begins with one of the end-letters in the English alphabet. I was so grateful* my parents chose that - because all through middle-school/high-school and college, it meant I got more time to get prepped for any-stand-up-and-recite queues in class - oral exams, roll-call, paper distribution, seating for college-lab-exams, viva-voce after lab experiments, etc. Some teachers reversed order but even then I was never in the first dozen. The relief!
When my cousin chose a name with A for her kid and said she wanted him to be first-of-the-first and spelled it with a double "Aa", I felt there was going to be some heated arguments at home between parent and kid once school begins. :)

I didn't know Elan meant "young", I thought it meant "tender" (related but not the same). We call pink - elan-sivappu in Tamil, where sivappu means red. Now I know what it means! Brings a smile to my face just thinking of "pink" as a young-red.

*(I gave parents a lot of grief about my full name though for other silly reasons )

    Hello !

No matter how much thought had gone in to the name, at home the child would be called "puppulu" or something affectionately nonsensical.
