    MANKIND, CHILDHOOD, AND STORYTELLERS

Blessed are those storytellers, who, for generations have saved the childhood of mankind. Once mankind loses its storytellers, it also loses its childhood. In every country and every community parents/grandparents tell bedtime stories to their children. These stories have survived for centuries. All of these stories are moralistic in content. They tell about the victory of truth over untruth, honesty over dishonesty, loyalty over disloyalty, kindness over cruelty. They tell about courage, adventure, love, faith. Two such storybooks that come to mind right now are Hitopadesaar and Panchtantra. Blessed are the kids who have someone to tell them these bedtime stories. Later on, in their lives, they come face to face with real-life stories.

I guess in the literary field there are many more storytellers than poets or essayists. Thousands of stories are told in the form of short stories, long stories, and novels. Our epics like Ramayana, Bhagwat and Mahabharat are also in story format. These storytellers keep us grounded by presenting to us what exists but our open eyes do not see. Thousands of stories are scattered around us but only the observant eye and mind with a very large heart can express them in words.

But for these storytellers, mankind would be very poor with neither a heart nor a soul.

Indeed... the storytellers had moved on to new platforms.

    From Wikipedia:
Kamishibai (Japanese: 紙芝居, "paper play") is a form of Japanese street theatre and storytelling that was popular during the Depression of the 1930s and the post-war period in Japan until the advent of television during the twentieth century. <==click to see image of a kamishibaya.

    Kamishibai
was told by a kamishibaiya ("kamishibai narrator") who travelled to street corners with sets of illustrated boards that they placed in a miniature stage-like device and narrated the story by changing each image.

Kamishibai has its earliest origins in JapaneseBuddhist temples where Buddhist monks from the eighth century onward used emakimono ("picture scrolls") as pictorial aids for recounting their history of the monasteries, an early combination of picture and text to convey a story.

Advertising agencies of the modern times use "story boards" in their sales-pitch to sell an idea to a client.

When Kamishibaiya were disappearing, parables have moved on to television, and then on to (on-demand TV) internet.

Yes. There was commander Data from Star Trek.

This is the season (late Fall, early Winter in northern hemisphere) when Americans celebrate the Thanksgiving, and the movie " The Wizard of Oz" is shown on some TV statation. That is a story where one guy(without a heart) seeks a heart, another without a brain seeks a brain, and a third without courage wants some. They all get together with a lost young girl, and go to the land of OZ, to ask the famous wizard to give them their wishes. Good movie to watch. The movie starts in Black & White, and then transitions into technicolour. Trailer

Thanks. There is somewhat similar story about Shiva, His consort Parvati and their Nandi on the lines of 'Miller and his son and their donkey'. Once Shiva and Parvati came on earth with their Vahan Nandi, Parvati following Shiva and Nandi following both of them. Some guys on the road said-foolish guy- the women could very well ride the Bullock. Parvati mounted on Nandi. After a while, anther group said-disrespectful lady riding the bullock and her husband walking on foot. So, Parvati dismounted and Shiva took the seat. A little further another group says, heartless guy making the wife walk. So both mounted Nandi. Needless to add another group felt sorry for the poor bullock. So both dismounted. The moral of the story is simple-it is difficult to satisfy everybody on this earth.

    Stabhda- Bewildered?
    Prapancham- Cunning ways?
Yes there are so many stories yet to be told because we have both brain and heart. Then there are stories within story-like Mahabharata, Ramayan, Bhagwat. Sometimes the story remains the same but the storyteller changes.

Human beings want to live at least for some time in a fantasy world, totally unrelated to them to escape for sometime from the real sufferings. TV serials have become so popular because of this psyche.Every one knows that any MIL cannot be so bad, or a woman will not be so cruel a villain as picturised. There arises a temporary satisfaction that they are not so much affected as picturised in TV serial, short story or novel.
The gossip which is the essence of life has an important role to play through these serials.
psychologists are of opinion that reading any story, whether epic purana, or novel relieves people of mental strain.
Kudos to story tellers, though they are branded as 'licensed liars'

Fantasy Land!!! I guess every story has a message to convey from the writer's or teller's point of view, right or wrong. Most of old classics have a moralistic message. Children stories are full of such messages.
The 'Licensed liars' do tell something that could have happened or can happen.
