Shanmugam from Thirunelveli - was one of my free tuition students in 1962-63. He was extremely poor in maths. He found it difficult to understand even simple concepts. He was backward student in govt college but was sincere and docile in learning. In calculus he was having the strong urge to cancel the the d’s in dy/dx. But steadily he made progress but after six or seven months he disappeared and his memories at the back of my mind bothering me for some time. After several decades, I happen to seek admission in a government college for son of one of my bosom friends, I was directed to meet the principal. I wrote my name in a chit and handed over to the peon standing outside principal’s chamber. When the buzzer rang, peon let me and the boy in. Upon seeing me entering with a boy, principal stood up - his eyes widened, palms joining uttered the greetings “vanakkam, Guruji”. He was none other than Mr. Shanmugam .
Old phrase : If you love something set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it never was. New addition : And if it just sits there on the sofa, watching tv/cellphone and unaware that it's been set free , you probably gave birth to it..
