As I entered your room half closed curtains welcomes me waving gently. You wouldn’t let me in when you were here. Your sticky stop sign on the door still makes me pause before I enter. Your favorite singers poster, your korean stickies, your scribbled drawings on the wall all stare at me. The room is just the way you left it. I too leave without disturbing anything.

As I shop for weekly grocery I remember to buy a little less. I still have to get used to cooking a little less. I pick your favorites and put it back thinking I will get it when you come for a visit. That’s when reality slowly descends. Visiting is all that’s going to be.

When my colleagues asked me few days back how I was doing with you away, I put a brave face and said I am happy for you. I also told maybe the reality has not sink in yet. And today was that moment.

My days were filled with little arguments between us. Sometimes it ended up in big fights. But you gave me an opportunity to grow from within. You helped me realize who I truly am. You showed me the immense strength I had within. You were the reason behind a social cause I am contributing today. Everything began with you. I fought my toughest battle with life holding your little hands. When everyone I loved left me be it a friend or family you came back to me everytime giving me hope and showing me I was just a human.

For your age I admire your quest for knowledge. I admire how you believe in what you do even if it’s against the norms. I was taken aback when you told me how we guys raised you so independently that it has given you confidence to go out in the world. I am still an imperfect parent still learning. You are my greatest teacher.

I am already missing you so much. I miss seeing you at home. I miss the sound of your name around me. Day begins thinking about you. It’s hard to swallow a bite thinking you might not be eating the same food. I know its life. We all moved away from our families. But the bond became stronger. Hope our bonds strengthen too with distance. I wish nothing but the best for you like any other parent does.

Ending with the lovely song we share
Vazhvu thodangum idam needanae - Life began with you
Vaanam mudiyumidam needanae - Sky is our limit
Kaatrai poala nee vandhayae - You came like a breeze
Swasamaga nee nindrayae - You became my breath
Maarbil oorum uyirae - You are the life that oozes in my heart
Oru dheyivam thandha poovae - You are(a flower) the blessing of the divine

This is just a mother’s plight being away from her child where she lets a part of her out in this world to experience life. Life goes on just like a river that flows downstream.

    Dear Lakshmi,

Very well written snippet. I know the feeling of empty nest when one of your children leave for better prospects. "Danger, enter at your own risk" is still a sticker in my son's room. The children are the greatest teachers humbling us everyday. But I am little nervous to say this here.

Write a wonderful letter to your child about how much you miss her and let her know that her home misses her so much. I did that to my son which resulted in his frequent visits home. You did the right thing by keeping the room in tact the way it was before.

Dear jskls, very beautiful expression bringing to my mind ,those days when my daughter left for her husband's home.Tears rolled down and I could not weep as it was a happy farewell.

This is the plight of all mothers when daughter leaves for higher studies or leaves home after wedding to start her life.Amidst anxiety due to separation ,there is a spring of happiness that she has grown into a responsible girl ,independent and decisive.Sooner she will get wedded, become a mother and the thread continues. That is the reality.

She has kept her first step in the threshold of independence and that is welcome. Let her blossom into a strong willed lady capable of facing all situations with determination.
    A daughter like mother.

    Dear JKLS,

I could feel from your writing how it feels to be away from your daughter.
You have expressed the emotions in a very touching manner. However what brought a smile is she's away from you to soar new heights . :)

    Regards,
    Anusha.

    :hello:
    @jskls
You have walked your followers in IL through pangs of separation in your heart-wrenching tear-jerking narrative.
    2. Kudos to your expressive jotting.
    3. Am sure one should follow the advice of @Viswamitra in his FB here

    4. Radhika next door, when she was seven or eight used to play in our home. I had a large blackboard fixed on the wall in my studies. She would happily scribble to her heart content with colour chalks and use a duster kept handy at the base of board.
    5. She used to accompany me to open terrace and both would offer mixture (snack) to birds. Numerous crows would gather sitting on the parapet and she would say excited class-time for kakas ((crows)).
    6. She with her parents shifted residence we shed parting tears.
    7. After 12 years or so, she returned from Bangaluru - after finishing her post graduation in management. She visited us looking tall more handsome and beautiful claded in ms blue silk saree. After profound hug with eyes tearful, she climbed stairs to look at the black board which she used to scribble over. I too slowly ascended the stairs behind her.
    8. Her last drawn-chalk-figure of a small girl in colourful stiff flowery frock with round face and bouncing hair on the board was staring at her.
    9. A great surprise for her. After so many years, it is still over there without being erased.
She captured it in her smartphone and fell at our feet shedding a tear.
    Amen.

    Thanks and Regards.
God bless in child’s naive smile & drawings including their calligraphies.

My parents also living in an empty nest. We go there with our bags stay for few days and then left. Sometimes I feel that I should not go there much as they are old now and can't handle my naughty kids and get tired. But other times I see that how much they want my kids to come and make them tired.

:hello:Whether one willy nilly like it or not, in the mind’s eye the grand child or children especially as kid will be there and with their thought often they close their eye lids tight as if the view would go away.
    • You might like revisiting my FB here at #8 which was posted in a tad hurry which stands edited.
My mother and my spouse mother, both visited us for a short period during summer holidays in 1993 . My mother more social and at the drop of a hat would get ready for any outdoor work or visit whereas my spouse mother slow and like worship in temples, reading, singing and listening to devotional Karnatic songs. My boy being elder found more fond of my MIL WHERAS MY DAUGHTER liked to and listen to more with MY MOTHER. BETWEEN two grand Mothers, their grand kids likeness so varied, it was difficult to gather all four together for a meal or lunch indoor or outdoor. I used to face excuses when I tell them to get ready for sightseeing or eating out.
    Thanks and Regards.
    God nourishes relationships.
