    :hello:
PAPPA PAPPA POOL WAS COOL :hello:

    Cool Beer and swim Etiquette
It was summer, when my Jaipur friend called me to join in a discussion with a rep of foreign manufacturer for collaboration for production of beer to which I favourably inclined. I suggested a period to my colleague for fixing up the appointment. The product was supposed to have 12 health benefits. Chief among them is that its consumption would reduce the risk of kidney stone formation by 40%. The demand was huge and fabulous money to make.
A week later, he phoned up from Jaipur that appointment is fixed for the afternoon of a particular day and therefore I must look for him in a five star hotel in South of erstwhile Bombay. I heard further from him that the foreign rep had already arrived the previous night from Agra with his family.
I was close to hotel when sun was at its zenith. It was time for the meeting.

I telephoned my friend’s local office to know his status. When I enquired about his master, someone responded, in a heavily accented tone in Hindi ‘sahib-ahaj-margaya’ meaning that master is dead today. I was shell shocked and shaken. My friend never showed up any signs of health problem and he spoke enthusiastically over phone previous night about the impending meet. Before I could recover from the shock and elicit more information, the line went dead.

A fair looking lanky lady clad in printed silk at the hotel reception, patiently listened to my briefing about afternoon appointment with a foreign businessman who had flown in with family from Agra, checked-in the previous night. Craning toward a huge over size register and glancing into it with batting eyelids, spoke on the intercom and then said to me “yes Sir. Mr. Jonathan would meet you here please.”

I waited by reception wondering how to open up with the foreigner.

I stood up from lounge sofa as a stocky-pinkish-man ambled to the reception. The lady pointed to me. He approached and gestured me to a nearby mahogany couch. I strained my ears to listen to his heavily accented English. I managed to convey the news.

When he uttered “Oh! No”, my friend or his ghost was coming smiling waving his hand. My heart missed a couple of beats. Shaking hands, I told about what I heard from his local office. Then he told that he did proceed from home to Ajmer and came from there to the hotel. It was clear that the office staff was telling ‘Sahib Ajmer gaya’ (master had gone to Ajmer). All three of us had a hearty laugh.

Initiating the discussions, my friend told about readiness of infrastructure, power and other utilities and plant could go on stream in 6-8 months from completion of installation and other formalities including government rigmaroles. Clinking glass tumblers for each other’s health (and to spoil our own), we commenced sipping the frothy chilled liquid just served. Some (un)pleasant scene at a distance was distracting us.

We noticed a slim tall fair doe-eyed lady and an innocent light-pinkish nipper were emerging out from the adjacent swimming pool clad scantily in skin-fit red-brief. A shocked manager of the hotel who was earshot, scampered in their direction in a tearing hurry and politely suggested that lady was not supposed to be clad in that manner to swim. No sooner he finished with this statement, the lady attempted funny.

Dumbfounded- the manager in a clarifying tone loudly told, what he meant was she should cover both upper and lower part of her body with appropriate costume. The lady retorted that she ought to have been told clearly by the manager in the first instance!

The foreign rep was a picture of aplomb. He asked my friend as to how many bottles of beer being contemplated to produce annually.

When my friend told ‘two million’, the foreigner was grinning, shaking his head from side to side, said that that was number of bottles produced per day per shift in each of their three plants in Düsseldorf- Germany. We were aghast and ended up shaking good-bye.

With the pool lady behind ambling and nipper clad in slinky tops and matching Capri hopping towards us; and the nipper running with open arms hugged the foreigner “papa papa- pool was cool. ”

    Dear Thyagarajan Sir,

Your memories of the past are soaked in sense of humor. For some strange reason, I have a habit of not taking death news of someone only once and I will reconfirm it again. I have this habit from early life. Your experience makes me feel good about my habit.

Beer perhaps is most consumed in Germany at that time and with the present India, the volumes he was talking about may be possible with a whole new generation drink beer everyday. Germans do have a very unique English accent and it feels like speaking to a Russian in English.

"Papa, Papa, the pool is cool" is a fine end to an interesting snippet.

Beers produced in Germany strangely enough, are hardly exported unlike Danish or Ditch brands. Mst of th beer made in Germany is drunk there itself. So cool pool or not some chilled German brew is welcome.

    :hello:Thank you sir.
I agree with your statement about consumption then and now in India and thought of my friend foreseeing huge profits to be made. Later he turned to forwarding and custom house agency business in then Bombay minted money and gone on acquisition spree. I heard from his son recently that my friend is no more and hence the story.
    Thanks and regards.
