I have a 5-year-old son with autism who cannot speak and we go to speech therapy to overcome it. Therapy fees are a bit expensive for us and we are looking for alternatives. We have found an app designed for children with autism called otsimo and they have an app about speech. We started using it and it was really useful. I would like to share the app's site with you Otsimo | Special Education for Special Children | Autism, Down Syndrome …, hopefully it will be useful for you.

I think having your kid around other kids can help with the improvement in speech.

I know each kid under this spectrum is different. Have your kid started asking his needs using one word or initiate the communication using pointing or signing? Just wanted to help you as I have son with autism. If you don't want to answer in the forum that's fine...

My daughter also now 3.5 yrs old she started speaking normally now. Don't worry he will started talking soon..When my daughter 3 yrs old i also worried the same. we speak three languages at home Hindi, English and other so she is so confused. Firstly i will force her to talk like telling rhymes, singing songs like that but that time she didn't do. Then we leave it to her whenever she wants she will talk.Suddenly, she talking talking with her friends one day. There i realize communication Plays key role here. because everyday when she go to Playground she will make sound like two, three words something with her friends but now she is talking sentences. Even my helper don't know my language she speaks hindi..When children growing they will understand everything and we started communicating more with her then she also started talking...Whenever we think too much then Problem looks like Big. Speech therapy is also good option. Even for my daughter also i took but in waiting list with in this time she starting talking i hope your son also will started talking soon...

My dr in India used to say you only need to worry if teachers complain. Sometime putting the kid in play school or play group will help with language skills.

If in US , your doctor will be able to say and you can easily get the kid evaluated and have speech therapy classes.

For my second one dr in US said to get it done as the kid was unable to say mom and dad’s name in one visit because we never prepared her for that . I felt it was not necessary but I just enrolled the kid in preschool and kumon to improve vocabulary and give more opportunities to speak and finally did not need any speech therapy .

    Hi @Benadryl

Being a certified speech therapist myself, I would like to answer your queries.

I dont know if its too late to reply. Just for your reference....

    1. When should you start worrying about speech output?
We as SLPs start diagnosing children as early as 2 years. Early intervention is the key. Some children tend to talk late, especially boys. But its always better to be safe than sorry. The more relaxed you are, saying that "he will talk slowly by himself", kindly remember that the gap increases. We as SLPs find it difficult when such parents wait even till 7 or 8 years. We have to fill-in that 8 year gap and thats not possible in one week or one month. It will take a minimum of 1 year to make a completely non-verbal child to communicate effectively (verbal/ gestures).
So, if you notice that kids dont speak even after 4 years, please consult a certified speech therapist.
Because, the first 7 years of life is called as the "critical age". Lot of development (motor/sensory/speech) happens and almost gets completed by 75% in this period. So, the sooner, the better. Even after 7 or 8 years we can make a child communicate, but the progress gets delayed accordingly.

    2. Monolingual/ Bilingual/ Multilingual confusion
There are scientific evidences which conclude that bi/multilingual children learn things faster as their brain gets more sharp (more sulci and gyri - technical info). Yes it is a common misconception among every Indian that multilinguals speak later. Kindly listen to professional advice. Avoid pieces of information that just come through word of mouth.
The concern should always be about communication. How is the child's communication intent? Does he do meaningful pointing? ... How does he fulfills his needs....There are a lot of things to be assessed.

    3. SLPs are professional who help in developing your child's receptive and expressive language, speech skills, socio-linguistic and pragmatic skills. No, we are not vocabulary books. That can just be done through youtube / school teachers... Kindly understand that speaking is a complex skill and is only available for human beings. We think, co-ordinate and speak. Basically speech involves the brain, senses, motor co-ordination (at mouth level), feedback, concepts and a lot more interconnected neural networks.

So, its better to get professional help. Also remember that we as SLPs only offer professional help and guide you on how to go about. You as parents are the real players and your kid's progress majorly depends on home training (Because you are available 24X7 with your kid each day).

    Hi,

Found this post while searching IL for speech delays. Would like to know an update about ur son regarding his speech.
My 5 year old son started K this year and his teacher always complaints that he doesnt follow directions or try to make a conversation with his peers. He started saying few words and simple sentences by 4 years old, but never was comfortable to make conversations !! He is neither talking English or our regional language proficiently. He attended a preschool for 4 months when he was 3 years old and due to Covid he got locked up in home after that.. He loves reading much and very smart to learn alphabets/numbers/shapes and all. Enjoys coloring the books and to watch cartoon videos (conversational videos in English). He was evaluated for Speech (both in English and our regional language) at school and he seems to just repeat what they asked ! Could answer those questions related to academic - like pointing to an alphabet / color / shape and say the correct answer. But failed to say anything else !!
Most probably he will be on an IEP soon related to his speech problem . At home we started talking to him in English more and reads/talks a lot to him, to help him to go ahead with a conversation. But most of the times, he keeps a simple answer Yes or No or keeps mum or starts crying to escape from that ! We are working on him daily, but his teacher comments are always painful, she just rejects whatever progress he has made !! Very hard time !

Teachers always want the easy way out, don't worry about them. Do everything you can to get your kid to better than his peers.

If you haven't already, please go for speech therapy at least two or three times a week as soon as possible.
