    Episode 5:

“Grandmaa…. One good news” – Tulasi showed her teeth

    “Yes my dear”- Grandma

“I passed in all subjects” – Tulasi

“Good Good” – Grandma caressed her cheeks gently.

“I will tell this to Jo! “-Tulasi said and ran into Mary’s house.

“Jo! You know what?” – Tulasi started

“I know! And I have a gift for you as well” – Joyal smiled

“What you know? And what’s the gift?” – Tulasi was curious

“You passed in all subjects and this is the gift for you” - Joyal smiled as he gave her a big mickey mouse watch.

“Wow!” – Tulasi was very happy and she ran around the house happily.

It was around 11 in the morning and Grandma was busy making flower strings from her garden.

Mary walked in with a dull face.

“Come Mary! Sit” – Grandma said as she took a single flower to twine with the thread.

Mary sat and looked at the colorful flowers in the garden. As she kept thinking about something, Grandma served her a tumbler full of Milk Payasam (Kheer) and Mary smiled.

“Thanks ma…. You made for Tulasi?” – Mary asked as she sipped.

“Yeah! She has asked for Payasam (Kheer). So, I made Milk Payasam since you like this.” – Grandma sat slowly.

“Hmm-mm…. Am not in good mood ma today” – Mary started.

“First have this peacefully. Then let’s talk”- Grandma

“I know I know! Along with Tulasi, even am growing…. “– Mary laughed.

After few minutes, Mary kept the tumbler on the table and started.

“Too many fights these days ma. Don’t know what to do… No solid reason as well… But we fight always…. That too these days….” - Mary

    “Hmmm…. I heard your husband’s voice yesterday…. I guessed…. You both should talk Mary. Joyal shouldn’t see such fights na….” – Grandma

“Hmmmm…...” – Mary was lost in her thoughts.

“I won’t say he is bad…. but don’t know why fight often” – Mary said coming out of the thoughts.

“I can understand” – Grandma said softly.

Mary was quiet for some time. She kept looking at Grandma. She had an oval face and small bhindi to adorn it. A vintage golden earring to adorn her old ears. But the smile and softness in her eyes were constant and Mary always admired that. She was curious too.

“Maa…I always wanted to ask you…You never fought with your husband?” – Mary

“That’s a good question finally! We use to” – Grandma laughed

“Then how did you manage?” – Mary

“We were no special couple Mary! We were just an ordinary couple! But once we made a decision which was very helpful when we were having fights….” – Grandma

    “What’s that?” – Mary

“Whenever we want to fight or argue or the situation is likely, we both decided to hold each other’s hand. We spoke whatever we want to holding each other’s hand. Our big dealing was that we should never leave the hand until the fight is resolved” – Grandma smiled

It was quite interesting for Mary and she kept looking at Grandma’s face without her knowledge.

“Enough of staring at me” – Grandma blushed.

“Holding other’s hand worked out? You never fought after that?” – Mary

“I don’t think two individuals can live together without disagreements. But the disagreements became very decent. We didn’t have any ugly fights like we use to have. It was firm and smooth. Everything was under control and there wasn’t any emotional outburst…..” – Grandma replied genuinely.

“If possible, try and see… Talk with your husband” – Grandma continued “during fights, we often think the other as our competitor dear. But in reality, we both are team mates! Team mates facing the society. We are team mates and that’s the only truth. Holding hands reminds us the truth. And this is just my experience.”

Mary kept admiring Grandma and the lady in her.

“But the thing is both of you should be interested in reducing the fights…Else it wont work. My husband and myself were keen on making our lives peaceful. So, we put utmost care to make it pleasant and it worked. So, see to it” – Grandma finished.

Saravanan was busy from morning. The house was getting cleaned and Veni’s mom was busy preparing sweets and snacks. Veni was chatting with her grandma and her grandpa was out for a walk.

“Saravanaaa!!! Be calm! Its just your friend” – Veni’s grandma said from the balcony.

“Yeah maa! But he is coming here after years! Its almost 10 years since I met him with family. I really want everything to be perfect!” - Saravanan replied as he wiped the clock.

“You prepared the sweets and snacks?” – He asked as he walked into the kitchen and Veni’s mom was perfect. Everything was ready.

“Daddy….I will show them my cupboard….My toys and everything. Is there anyone to play with?” – Veni

“Yes dear! There is a 7-year-old girl and a 10 months old baby girl” – Saravanan replied as he re arranged the furniture’s.

“Super! I will play with the baby then! Babies are cute na” – Veni smiled and Saravanan was busy arranging the furniture.

“Enough Saravanaa ! Too much arrangements” – Veni’s grandma sighed.

“Maa! You forgot? He was the one who helped me when I had my most difficult time!” – Saravanan

“Of course! Who denied that! But still” – Veni’s grandma

“Wait! I think its him” – Saravanan attended the phone.

“Yeah! You are right! Vintage Villas! I think you are almost here! Just turn right and you can see our villa. Yeah! Am coming out” – Saravanan hung the call and ran outside to bring him.

In few minutes, the living room was full and every one was busy recollecting the old moments and soon both the families were feeling nostalgic.

“Those days will never come na” – Saravanan said everyone agreed genuinely.

Veni’s mom served them snacks and as usual it was stunningly delicious and she was showered with appreciations and Saravanan sat with a proud smile.

He slowly walked into the kitchen and saw his wife preparing coffee for everyone.

“You impressed everyone with the magic in your hands” – Saravanan said and his wife smiled.

“Come on! Let’s move to the balcony. The view is good” – Saravanan invited his friend.

The ladies were into the kitchen and kids were left in the living room to play.

Baby’s mom went into the kitchen for a moment as she was called. Veni was showing her toys to the elder kid and the baby was crawling towards the girls.

“Just a minute! I will bring us coffee” – Saravanan came from the balcony and the elder kid ran towards her dad in the balcony.

Veni and the baby were left alone in the living room.

All of a sudden, Saravanan’s landline phone rang and he sat on the sofa as he attended the call. That was his relative and as he spoke as he looked at Veni unintentionally.

She was looking at the baby crawling towards her. The baby was crawling towards Veni with an enthusiastic smile and Veni was moving back slowly. Again, the baby crawled towards her and slowly Veni was moving back.

Soon Saravanan hung the call and went towards Veni.

“What happened dear? See! The baby wants to come to you…Maybe she likes you. See how cute her smile is” – Saravanan took the baby towards Veni and Veni moved back.

“What happened dear? – Saravanan asked with confusion waiting to get his heart broken.

    Episode 6:

“Please don’t bring the baby near me” – Veni said in a low voice making sure that no one else can hear that.

“Why sweetheart? What for you are afraid?” – Saravanan

“Please! Am afraid it will touch me! Please don’t bring near me” – Veni said seriously

“Are you afraid that you will drop the baby down?” – Saravanan

    “No daddy” – Veni

“Then what happened? Why you don’t want the baby to touch you” - Saravanan

“Daddy…Its black….” – Veni said with a disgusting face and Saravanan froze in shock.

“What are you saying Krishnaveni?” – Saravanan was about to yell but asked in a composed voice.

“We shouldn’t touch black people Daddy… Moreover, I heard grandma talking to mom. Our housemaid and your friends’ family are of same caste…. We shouldn’t touch them” – Veni said with a disgusting face

And Saravanan couldn’t come out of the shock. Swallowing the shock, he slowly looked at others and everyone were busy. No one noticed this ugly conversation and his ugly child.

Tears rolled on his cheeks without knowing what to do or what to talk. He stood as such and his friend over heard the conversation as he stood in the balcony.

“Saravanan! I just got a call! I need to move! It’s a family emergency. We will meet later” – He said all of a sudden and Saravanan stood with guilt.

Sometimes, unknowingly the kids reveal the real face of the families. His friend didn't expect that his friend's family will have such an ugly face behind all the honey dipped hospitality.

“What happened suddenly?!” – Saravanan tried his best wishing that his friend shouldn’t have overheard the ugly thought.

“I will tell you later! Now we need to start! Come on people! Let’s start” – His friend said and walked towards Saravanan.

“Come on my darling! Let’s move” – He took the baby from Saravanan’s hand and the baby kept smiling at Veni for no reason. And Veni was getting relieved from disgust as the baby was moving away.

At once they left, Saravanan went to the terrace and stood as such. Tears rolled over his cheeks thinking of his daughter.

From the day she was born, I did put utmost care in bringing up a good-hearted human being. I thought her good moral, values of life, and all the other good things. I read good books to her even when she was inside the stomach…. What was my mistake…I changed myself completely after she was born and above all we all showered her with love and care and where did it go wrong….?

He wiped his tears. She is my lifeline! How can she be like this? May be someone in her school taught her? No one in our family discriminates others like this. I know my mom.... She is conservative, but she wouldn't go to that extent. Saravanan was still in shock.

He was always proud of her daughter for her inborn skills and good deeds. But this one!!! How did it come?

As he was standing alone, his wife came towards him.

“What happened?! All of a sudden you came here without informing us?”

Saravanan turned and looked at her. And She was shocked to see tears in his eyes. This is the first time she is seeing tears in his eyes in these 11 years of marriage life.

“What happened?!” - Veni’s mom asked and he depicted everything.

    “Hmmm….” – Veni’s mom

“Aren’t you shocked?” – Saravanan looked at his wife

    “No….” – Veni’s mom continued.

“Not sure who told her about this “black” thing and all. But this caste thing is from your mother”

“You could have told me na?!!!” – Saravanan asked with concern

“You forgot? We both got into numerous fights in few days of our marriage? Just because I complained about your mom. After that have I ever complained about her? Or would you consider it? She is the 'Best mother'. Right? ” – Veni’s mom

May be good mothers are not always good human beings....And yes bad human beings can be wonderful mothers....

Saravanan didn’t have an answer. He loved his mom so deeply and that’s why he named his daughter as “Krishnaveni”.

Both stood quietly for few seconds and then Veni’s mom walked away without talking anything.

Saravanan’s only motto of life was to bring up a perfect daughter. His definition of perfect was that his daughter should have known good values and morals.

“Whats the use of all the awards she got when she is discriminating an innocent baby?” - Saravanan cried again.

His 10 years of life as a father was a failure. He couldn’t understand anything. He didn’t want to discuss this with anyone else in the family and bloom it big.

It was around 5 in the evening, the maid walked in. Veni’s mom was preparing coffee for the family.

“Come in! Coffee?” – Veni’s mom asked the maid.

“Thanks ma” – the maid smiled.

Veni’s mom poured coffee into four white ceramic coffee cups, and poured the remaining coffee into a very old aluminium tumbler. And she poured milk into a red mickey mouse cup for Veni. The 4 white ceramic cups, the chirpy mickey mouse cup and that old aluminium tumbler said many things.

Saravanan kept seeing all these quietly.

After having her coffee, the maid started sweeping the veranda.

“Hey…. You! Why did you bring your kid here yesterday?! He was crawling into our Pooja room! Don’t ever bring him again” – Veni’s grandma told the maid and Saravanan was quiet.

Veni listened to everything though she was playing with her toys.

“The rice has gone bad. Shall I throw it away?!!” – Veni’s mom asked her mother in law.

“Why do you want to waste that?! Put it in a paper cup and give it to the maid! Her family will be thankful” – Veni’s grandma

Veni’s mom walked into the kitchen and she heard “Don’t give her in our bowl! Use the paper cup”.

Saravanan was watching everything quietly. He thought of a decision which his family would never agree to.
