A very valid question indeed. It is very difficult to keep the whites looking white in the US. I say 'in the US' because I feel the problem is pronounced here. It may be due to the water quality where I live and also the detergents available here etc. I lived in Germany before and you could get special detergents for whites and black clothes! I see you live in UK. Don't you get the same there? Besides, they also sold special add ons to keep the whites bright.

One tip I can give you is that you must separate your laundry. Wash the whites only with whites and don't mix with other colors. It does help. Also, a washout jeans trousers or skirt can be added to the whites as the blue peps up the whites. Actually, you can get something called 'neeli' in India.

My friends in Germany used to color all their whites every now and then with clothes color--white! Also, use the highest temperature that the cloth-tag suggests while doing the cycle.

Best of luck..others may come up with more suggestions.

    L, Kamla

    Dear Harini,

    Try this as well...

Add one-half to 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per regular washer. The first time allow the clothes to soak in the washer for 30 minutes. Then wash normally only use less detergent. White clothes return to their normal brightness and colored cloths perk up as well. Add one quarter cup of baking soda to your washer for additional freshness...

One more imp thing...Begin filling your washer with water (not for front loading machines.) Add your detergent and peroxide then the clothes. The detergent can't clean unless it dissolves. Switch to liquid detergents for front loading washers.

    Hope it would help u....

Actually,Kamla,I was a bit surprised that it is difficult to make white clothes white in the U.S. In India,I used to find it difficult to maintain white clothes.Only,if you dry them out in the sun,the whiteness comes back to the clothes there.

Here, with Clorox laundry bleach,I find it quite easy.Like Cheer said,I soak the whites separately with clorox bleach overnight and wash them the next day adding my regular detergent and I use the soaked water too to wash it.I use hot water for washing all whites, towels and bedspreads. The whites come out real good. So,Harini, you can try that.

    hi harini,
I follow the same. i use clorox laundry bleach. I dont soak it overnight. just soak it in the morning wash it in the afternoon. (I feel the vests tend to get small holes if left overnight) and one more suggestion. after washing it completely, i just allow one more cycle of wash so that any residue of clorox bleach being in the clothes. since bleach is harmful, and if you have kids more so.

    Love
    shanthi.
