Socrates deliberated incessantly over the value of marriage whether the union of two minds engendered a superior 'collective' mind! as in ... the couple were enriched in each other's presence. He stated: "As to marriage or celibacy, let a man take which course he will, he will be sure to repent. By all means marry, if you get a good wife, you will be happy. If you get a bad one, you will become a philosopher, and that is also a good thing for a man."

With such assurance from a legendary scholar, no man would abstain from the nuptial altar.

George Orwell could only forewarn us of our countenance : 'By forty, everyone has the face they deserve'.

You have asserted socratic that by forty every man will know whether that face had been destined for a 'philosopher' or 'husband' in mutual exclusion.

Indeed! Thyagu, in his laugh-light demeanor is sui generis. His casual talk, cool think alongside his profile are tasteful! Never seen anyone like him in that hearty cheer.

:hello:It is biased. Why Socrates assumed wife- to -be will be dull headed & men are unique as a gender, would be bestowed always with superior brain and intelligence. If it is question of luck, it is applicable with equal force to both genders.
What i have stated is applicable for both genders.
    Thanks and regards.
God is unbiased with persons' gender or genderless.

Thyagu, I quoted socrates in his originality (he quoted: man) without affixing the universality of gender as that citation is often bandied jocularly to demonstrate that marriage does strange things to men of his time (nuptial aspirants in general, adjusted for today). Marriage benignly nurtures either 'philosophy' or 'happiness'.

Can you point in the original quote of such insinuation? Socrates stated 'philosopher' vs 'happy' as eventuality for husband. Where did he belittle woman as 'dull-headed' in this particular instance?

It would have been superfluous on a discerning forum to render the quote unwieldy and genderless because 'man, mankind' over 'human, humankind' though are language-appropriate for today's saying and sensibility, a citation is original saying to the sic. I didn't mean you promoted man. But he funnily interpreted marriage which incidentally was attributed to men.

I am forgiving of such philosophers who are the products of their time and cultural sensibilities and not quibble to retroactively amend sayings for inclusivity (which is a given!) Obviously, with no parenthetical emphasis, 'man' in the socratic quote is a stand-in for every gender speculating any form of companionship in modern retelling. I dread the verbosity to capture the all-encompassing notions of liberal spirit. Man is man and behind-the-sense and beyond-the-gender and far-reaching ..till a philosopher is made of him or her or them :rolleyes:o_O

    @Novalis

:hello: I am happy to respond.
I understood that Between being good and bad, a spouse can make husband a happy man or a philosopher. Not happy philosopher! Socrates directly not stated “dull headed spouse” but implied I suppose. Another implication could be that before forty, men should finish with nuptial.
    2. Atleast That is the crux of Socrates’ quote.
Many more difficult and other hypothetical questions cross the mind.
    3. It follows according to Socrates, a male can turn into a philosopher at 40 only if his unlucky spouse is bad.
    4. Why Socrates quote implies that for a man to become a philosopher at forty, his spouse should or would not be good?
    5. Were all male married philosophers’ spouses were ‘not good’ during Socrates period?
I do not know whether these are serious questions here!
    Thanks and Regards.
God lives in souls (the profiles of ) which are incapable of either happy or philosophical.

Such inquiry must cross but not overwhelm the mind ...as the only inquiry to overwhelm that you have grossly committed is:

No size, shape and texture escapes from your writing. Your profile is a smorgasbord of enviable pickings! Each line is a deflecting post in itself. One slopes to philosophy, another to food! I am glad you posted your profile content as a standalone blog for I missed it.

So, Friday night is sambhar festivity at your place. At my place, Saturday!

I fear to inquire other nightly menus as this incapacitated glutton (you said: drumstick! hardly found here) might not withstand such richly indulgent menus!

God ordained let there be the generous Thyagu for the drumstick and small-onion Sambhar to be rediscovered by Novalis.

    Loved reading your sprawling profile.

We are in and out of hospital for sometime.Just now I read your 'profile' and the interesting responses leading upto small onion Sambar and potato curry.
In between Socrates has made his entry and implication of his remarks made an interesting read.

    While matching alliances for marriage
mars in the seventh or 8th place from lagnam is a predominant factor popularly known as Sevvaai dosham.( Some call it sevvaai yogam) It is said that if a girl is having Mars in 7th or 8 th place her horoscope would match well only with that horoscope of the boy having similarly place(7th or 8th ) mars.

While discussing this aspect an astrologer observed that sevvaai dosham itself is still matter of research. If the mars factor is taken as minus( negative) if we add two negatives it will result more in the negative,

Only if we multiply - and - ,it will give + as the result.

Marriage factor should always be seen as an addition and not a cross or X or conflict against one another.
Only opposite poles attract and negative poles repel. So a horoscope with sevvaai dosham should never be matched another sevvaai dosham.
Already the topic has gone from 'profile' to samayal. Now I have extended it still more on seeing Socrates's remarks.
