No reason to apologize, Kamala. Very interesting information. Please continue to share more. Why should we not celebrate the cartoonist if we talk about his cartoon?

:hello:@satchitananda , @ @jayasala42 and all other followers in this thread:
During those days milk man will be milking in front of our house just before dawn and later part of evening. For some valid reasons , the man used to keep castor oil - CO bottle. Sometime the fresh warm milk would smell CO.

    2. IN VILLAGE TWO thieves visited my grandfather’s home on a Full moon day during vee hours wearing only black loin cloth covered themselves with charcoal powder slathered over their bodies. They were walking over the roof with the booty: and alerted by the noise from breaking of country tiles of which roof made of, grandpa with a big blanket ran out shouting thieves thieves . Few more joined and ran chasing the thieves. They were almost caught but slipped from the chasers’ grip.
The reason is they were generously anointed with Castor Oil mixed in pulverised charcoal.
But grandpa chased them. Luckily both thieves were running abreast and grandpa reached close to them, netted them both in his big black blanket.
These are other uses of CO during those days for record!
    Thanks and Regards.

Interesting. Milkman selling castor oil! What next? :) Enjoyed the story. Life was certainly a lot more interesting in those days. It's become very mundane in current times.

Not based on peer-reviewed data I might add, but an "n of one" experiment with apparently positive outcomes! I am glad that I never had to experience the castor oil thing - although the occasional flushing out of the plumbing seems to be a "good" idea a priori, decreasing as it does the exposure of the colonic mucosa to fecal mutagens, among other things. Which leads me to a question: Was the castor oil a kid-specific punishment or did adults luxuriate in laxatives as well?

Those drawings depict a vanished way of life of which only vestiges remain - unforgettable record of an era and an ethos. I jealously guard my copies of Gopulu's anthologies.

Dear Shri Sokanasanaha ,you have responded to in medico technical terms connected with cancer research.
As for your doubt, castor oil was given only to children and not after 14 or 15. As children are fond of bhakshanams and they will swallow limitlessly without the knowledge of elders, perhaps they decided to cleanse the system once in a way.In Tamil and Kerala Ayurveda treatment, for any disease, even for adults the first dose would consist of laxative for cleansing.
Normally old people above 70 often complain about constipation and and they are never advised to take strong laxatives like castor oil or epsum salt.In a few cases we have seen old people getting exhausted resulting in death.
While for diarrohea they always recommend glucose drips ,for constipation only natural food items like bananas and prunes are recommended. Two of my great grandmas seem to have died the day they were given an ounce of castor oil, my Amma was very hesitant to use laxatives for elders.

This @jayasala42 is such a trove of useful information!

Only in serious cases, where the old dear had collapsed, and cannot drink a rehydration solution:
When visiting India I mix sugar and salt in Bisleri(1liter) water, and have the kids take it with them in their backpack if they go wandering about in the hot sun. This solution is a good preventative of heat stroke, that comes from overexposure to sun.
    1. Six (6) level teaspoons of Sugar.
    2. Half (1/2) level teaspoon of Salt.
    3. One Litre of clean drinking or boiled water and then cooled - 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml.)
