    @Rihana,

    Thanks for sharing some lovely memories. The best thing about Chandamama is, it entertained several generations of kids across India and it has influenced them consciously or unconsciously. That is a great achievement for a magazine.
    Ah! Lovely memories! We didn't have ceiling fans then. We had only one table fan. If Amma restricted us from getting out of the house in the hot afternoons, we sisters would fight to sit right in front of the fan to capture breeze on our face and also make aaaa...sounds to enjoy sound vibrations! Either ways a punishment for Amma! So rarely she would restrict us. ;) Our large compound, the flora and fauna there would keep us engrossed and safe. The Peechu mitai was unheard of in my area; we depended on homemade snacks, occassional ice candies or the edible greenery around!( Budding guavas, nector of hibiscus flowers, sour grass, rose petals and many more!) We simply needed something to munch and keep us occupied.:chatter:

    Thanks for sharing your memories here, GB.
    All the magazines you mentioned were my favourites too. Though our family subscribed only to Sudha and Chandamama, I would catch up with the other magazines during our visits to relatives' places. I remember missing some interesting sequences or read a detective story right in the climax first and read the build up later!:facepalm:

    News paper and magazine papers used for packing triggered some more memories. In my house, I was the official sweeper for many years. So after sweeping, I would collect all the wrappers and scan them for interesting trivia! It never disappointed me for I still recall some amazing tidbits I read there.:tonguewink:

    Dear GeethaKashyap,

    You have nicely penned down the nostalgic memories of your childhood days in a breezy way, which sure made us all dig in to our memory store house.

    I never had the opportunity of reading Chandamama, because of financial restrictions my family faced, but still had lots of fun during summers, with friends and family. Mornings were spent in making different vathals, with my role being one of guarding the items from crows, sitting in the shade. The hot afternoons was spent in playing Dhayakattam with dice, pallankuzhi with Sozhis and a game using lots of tamarind seeds.

    Our neighbors often shared their Tamil weekly magazines, which we all read without missing a line. Evenings we would catch a bus to reach the Santhome beach and enjoy, few hours of cool sea breeze. The radio was there to entertain us throughout the day, and there was not a moment of boredom in our lives.

    It was the famous Nagireddy and Chakrapani, producer, Director duo, who were instrumental in establishing Chandamama, along with Vijaya vahini studios which churned out iconic movies in many languages. The studios have turned into first class hospitals and Chandamama shut down. It is sad to see the inspiring works of great visionaries coming to an end due to the onslaught of digital era.

Once again thanks to bloggist that helped or helping active olds here to reminisce.

    Agatha mam,

    It is so nice to see your comment in my blog. Thank you so much for the same.

    It is sad that many couldn't enjoy some simple pleasures of their childhood due to financial constraints. But seeing the same people as accomplished adults fills one with hope. Yes, like you mentioned, we too played those games endlessly; weren't they very wholesome? Radio was our only source of external entertainment in those days.

    Even though the digital era and advanced technology reduced our world into a global village, as you rightly pointed out, digital era also ended many good things in life including childhood innocence, family get-togethers and inter-personal meetings. Now everything is virtual.
