We Have The Best Evidence Yet That Psychedelic Drugs Can Repair Broken Neural Networks

Even though 1970s brought a grinding halt to such research, a new set of scientists began review of the effects of psychedelic drugs in the brains. I was listening to NPR Radio and a researcher in NYU shared the outcome of his experiments. Even though it is illegal to try this in the United States, a few human subjects explained the effect of Micro-dosing in removing their depression and suicidal thoughts.

Is it possible to eliminate unwanted memories in the brain and rewire the brain to forget those thoughts? Do these psychedelic micro-doses have the ability to expand the consciousness? Can ego be crushed to unite with the universal consciousness? What one can do to expand this awareness beyond those 30-60 minutes? Only time can tell.

Note: What does a burning bush indicate when revelation happened to Moses? Many new interpreters think it is inhalation of smoke from psychedelic plants. How did the Rishis heard the whisper of God in their hermitages? Did they inhale the smoke of psychedelic plants? What is so special about Himalayas facilitating expansion of consciousness?

There seems to be justified optimism regarding the use of psychedelics to treat mental health issues like depression and anxiety, even addictions. The first ever placebo-controlled trial of microdosing will start tomorrow, on Monday, 3 September 2018 at the Imperial College of London.

First ever trials on the effects of microdosing LSD set to begin

One of the books I've been waiting to become available at my library is Michael Pollan's 'How To Change Your Mind' which based on the reviews is an excellent account of the current state and future promise of research on psychedelics.

Michael Pollan Drops Acid — and Comes Back From His Trip Convinced
Why psychedelic drugs could transform how we treat depression and mental illness

This excerpt from the NYT review was quite compelling and gave me a lot to think about.

You don’t necessarily need drugs to enter this strange, egoless realm of consciousness: Near-death experiences, meditation and fasting can get you there, too. But psychedelics get you there quickly, while greatly intensifying concomitant feelings of oneness with … whatever it is the quieting of our default mode network puts us in contact with. Some may call it God, and others the cosmos, but even atheists come out of psychedelic therapy changed by the experience. “You go deep enough or far out enough in consciousness,” one researcher tells Pollan, “and you will bump into the sacred.”

All of which suggests that the Buddhist ideal of ego suppression is grounded in neurochemical reality, for the brains of experienced meditators and people undergoing a psychedelic trip display striking commonalities. The more connected we feel to what’s around us, and the less we obsess about ourselves, the happier we are likely to be.

    *emphasis mine

Microdosing with LSD or magic mushrooms has become hugely popular in the tech world. I have colleagues who have been microdosing for years. Some even grow their own mushrooms. I'm not that adventurous but also not averse to trying it myself, if only it were possible to source the compounds legally. Until I can get my hands on some I am even more convinced that I need to take my meditation practice up a notch.

The mention of rishis hearing the voice of god reminded me of Soma, Indra's favorite drink, the elixir of life that helped the Vedic people achieve control of their senses. It is a fascinating mystery since none of the currently proposed candidates quite satisfy the descriptions of the plant in either Vedic or Zoroastrian scriptures. I tend to think it was more than just an intoxicant. At least some component of the drink must have contained a psychedelic ingredient, considering the emphasis on its consumption leading to an enlightened, egoless state, even the discovery of god.

    @Gauri03,

Thank you for your very comprehensive response. For some strange reasons, these articles and radio shows keep following me wherever I go, being a believer that they are not coincidences. Our friend Soka casually mentioned to Jayasala about naturally occurring psychedelic drug inside the human brain in certain circumstances. I don't remember now but he quoted some reference to his comment which triggered me to dive deep into these studies. I have also come across this Naturally Occurring Psychedelic Drugs.

It is entirely possible that deep meditation could develop psychedelic experiences. I understand, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's transcendental meditation is entirely based on developing the brain to have psychedelic experiences. In recent days, several Buddhists meditate to destroy the body and mind Scientific Evidence Proves Buddhists Monks Can Transform Their Physical Bodies Into Pure Light | Ancient Code

During this transition, I believe all the standard support system we need in the body are no longer required literally enabling the person to relinquish the automated human functions.

These days when I think about the future the only thoughts that come to mind are about climate change. I am suffering from severe climate change anxiety. A colleague told me the other day I needed to speak to a therapist because that is all I talk about. :flushed: Wanted to put this here. More thoughts to follow...

Gauri, I don't blame you for worrying about the climate. Though I don't talk a lot about it, it is always on my mind. And then I end up consoling myself with the thought that I will likely not be around when the worst comes! Unless I reincarnate back here!!!

I agree completely Sir, but anxiety is irrational, creeps up unbidden. I have to say I do have a tendency to obsess. My worry is not for myself but for my children who are very young and will live to see the world devolve into chaos. That thought that keeps me up at night these days.

I agree with your colleague. It's indeed what you have been talking about lately but I get you. And anxieties are contagious, you ain't alone there!
