    Dear Jayasala,
Your example makes it a sad case.On the other hand three days back a washing machine mechanic came home to set right the machine.I was taken aback when he ,a diploma holder was making around Rs.sixty thousand a month.By the time he finished our complaint, he had three jobs waiting for him.On the other hand many engineers end up as Bank assistants, cashier etc. There is something wrong with around 10,000 engineering colleges while there are around five lakh unemployed engineers.A recent study has shown that 80% of the engineers are not employable. On the job skill development programme is helping them to get jobs
Highly competitive market is driving institutions to outsource-the pay is peanuts but the experience helps them in course of time.Recently I met a Swiggy delivery boy-sorry partner .a post graduate employed on a salary of around twenty thosand in a private firm.He said that he worked as a delivery partner for swiggy for two hours in the morning and four hours in the evening. The extra earnings took care of his EMI,Telephone and other personal expenses.Resourcefulness is an important factor to achieve stability and success.

As the world in tearing hurry to improve every segment or section of population , definition of down-trodden has taken phenomenal change and it would not be a surprise in a decade or two there won’t be a phrase called “domestic help”.

A middle aged woman previously a domestic help is now running a shop hiring implements, equipment’s, for construction workers like plumbers, painters etc and her daily turn over exceeds easily two thousand rupees while her three daughters are away studying in reasonably good school. Her husband who was a drunkard now turned a teetotaller after successive shots helped by “alcoholic Anonymous” managing his “spouse” business. The shop is ever busy seen from my balcony.

    Dear Thygarajan,
Thanks for the well researched and comprehensive feedback.Just in front of IT companies you will find wheelcart or a trolley doing roaring food business.Out of curiosity I had a chat with one such family.Iwas told that the wife started the business and husband resigned his job later on to help her.A hint here and there implied that they had Rs.3 lakhs business in a month.Such examples are on the rise with people willing to work hard and take risk.In our complex of two thousand flats and villas an intelligent old lady has made a name for herself with procurement and supply of dry fruits.
Domestic help will become a part of Indian history in the years to come.
    Regards-SLN

Very good point. Earlier middle-middle class homes could afford having help for chores like, cleaning their homes, washing utensils, some preparation for cooking or cooking itself, ironing, driver for cars, disposing of trash, picking up milk, groceries, etc.

Now it appears to be that in the big cities only the upper-middle class and above can afford this - and this situation is similar to the West. In the US, if you're a typical single-income family, considerable part of weeknights and weekends are for chores - yes you do have implements to help - dishwasher, washer and dryer, vacuuming, mower, iron, etc - but families have to manage without external help.

Is this a good step ahead?
    - Yes, in that these service workers are being paid more and commiserate to the importance and value they provide to the families they are providing vital services for.

    - Maybe not for elders who have to stay without the support of their adult children - who have to live away from their parents for job opportunities. Their cost of living has grown significantly because of the increases.

Some years ago, I was reading about "discrimination" and got lead to the the surprising fact that a number of domestic workers who come from villages and live with families in cities - usually quite common in South and South East Asia - are considered as part of the statistics for what is termed as "modern slavery". Even when they might be cared for and treated with respect by the families they serve - they are a part of a vicious cycle - because they don't earn enough to get out of the cycle of poverty - and many end up living far away form their children (throughout childhood) who are in-turn raised by siblings' families. And many times a young village "girl" begins her life like this with a good city family - and then she becomes a bread-earner for quite of her family members back home. She doesn't get married because she cannot afford to (time wise + life-style wise) - and her life is lead dedicated to her host and birth family. This situation is OK if the decision to do this was a "career choice" made by an adult - but most times this situation becomes something the young woman is unable to extricate herself from - because of lack of choice - which is where the severity of the problem lies.
