This is the most discussed topic in one of the social media group that I’m part of ‘Men in Kitchen…’

In this 2019 though we talk about gender equality in many houses when men return from office , women are expected to serve coffee irrespective of the fact they too have just returned from office. Last generation girls have been raised well to break the barriers, face the world somehow boys/men and some mothers still think kitchen is a no entry zone for the masculine gender.

One of my neighbours are in 80’s and living alone. When the elderly lady falls sick her husband still cribs and orders food from outside. ‘He doesn’t even know to light the stove’ she proudly says. Though we say older generation are often like this what steps have we taken to bring the husband and children to kitchen.

Though I have so many issues with my mother in law one thing I’m proud about her is she has trained both her sons(My hubby and BIL) to cook well. During her younger days she doesn’t enter kitchen during her monthly cycles. Those were the time, there were not much hotels in the vicinity and they had to wait till my FIL comes back from office and cooks something. This made my MIL to get frustrated and she trained her boys in kitchen.

Why am I getting so much worked about this topic? This is because of a incident my friend shared today. My friend is working in a IT concern starts for office at 7.00 am and reaches back by 7.30pm. Though she cooks for the family she doesn’t have time to pack lunch and ends up eating outside. Last week she reached home by 8.30pm and finds that sink is loaded and vessels are dry. She shouted at her son on why can’t you clean the plate properly and put it in sink? This irked her husband who asked ‘What mother are you? Expecting a boy to work in kitchen.’ This angered her and she stopped talking with her husband and cooking for him. End result:Last Friday when she reached home he has cleaned vessels in the sink and over the weekend he started learning to make dosa.

Though she feels her results might be short lived, she was happy her husband has taken first step towards kitchen. Let’s equip our boys who in turn will be somebody’s husband someday by teaching them to cook. Cooking should be considered more as life skill than female’s job. Especially with techniques such as OPOS cooking can be done by anyone effortlessly.

Let’s start making our family independent in cooking seriously and do our best to make them cook one dish at a time.

    @blackbeauty84,

Every men should learn how to cook. Most men of recent generation are learning how to cook because they think planning to eat healthy food can be implemented better by them making their own food. My son is too scientific in his cooking and wants to wait to add ingredients at certain stages of cooking and he explains all kind of stuff that goes well over my head.

I kept my cooking skill a top secret until I moved over to the US. I was working long hours and traveling extensively as long as I was working for public companies. For the past 16 years, I am working from home and I can plan my work throughout the day with little breaks. When my wife goes away to India, I cook and eat my own food.

My MIL came to know this because she was constantly asking what I was doing when they went away to India. Eventually, I revealed the secret to her. She was playfully asking me why I don't make food when she is around. Since then, I prepare food 2-3 times a day and my wife loves this break. My wife and Mil enjoy the meal so much whenever I cook food. :)

This is beyond stupid. These sorts of things are cumulative in a relationship between spouses. Your friend may tolerate that husband a little longer... but these are unforgettable things..... and surely will come back to bite his arse at a different time.

When a woman can earn money then why not a man can enter in kitchen? Boys should learn to cook simple dish atleast so that they can eat homemade food and should not depend on others . If both are working then have to cook together .

I have seen my dad in the kitchen from young age. Even my mom can't make certain dishes which my dad can make. I mean he has that unique taste. He is 65 and helps mommy with veggies cutting , prepares those unique dishes, vessel washing etc. My FIL has very less vision , but he grates cocunut, peels skin of cooked potato, removes the skin of peas etc. My hubby helps me in the kitchen with any small /big task I assign. He can survive on making basics when I am away. So definitely there are men out there who do their bit in the kitchen.
Your friend needs to be clear with hubby and say him cooking is life saving skill. It can help the kid(male or female) to survive in foreign countries and in home situations when mommy needs rest and the Daddy who can't cook because he feels "Expecting a boy to work in kitchen" makes her a bad mom! What a mentality.
And no need to make their life easy with OPOS and all. Let them learn proper cooking.

My son is a good cook, only thing is kitchen looks like, 'tsunami hit' afterwards. He has all sorts of gadgets, I didn't even know such things are in the stores.

His food presentation looks absolutely stunning, picture perfect!

Only warning would be, ....his elaborate 'cooking saga' comes with his food!o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

Just like women being financially independent men should know to feed themselves and if possible cook for the family too. A basic necessity

And who can forget the happy face of the wife when the man of the house cuts vegetables everyday early in the morning. That makes her life happy and every man should try that. I am speaking from that experience. :)
