The Needle Of

I woke up to see Kiran missing from bed again. There was a note from her on the table saying ‘Going to gym. Will be back by 8.’ I don’t understand why this sudden obsession into fitness that she wakes up early on weekends too. I sort of miss her these days. As said she was back at eight.

‘Shall we go out for breakfast?’ I asked. Our weekend doesn’t have any plans or agendas. We like to go with the flow.

‘We don’t have time. I’m going for team outing you remember?’ she told. Over breakfast she told about the team outing. She kept texting someone over breakfast and I saw she has locked it. This is the first time she has done so in our five years of marriage.

I tried to call Virat he didn’t pick up the phone. Virat was my best buddy we used to hang out often. Virat texted me saying he is at office. I slept and then binged on Netflix. Suddenly I felt bored and decided to go out for picking some essentials

I could do with a long drive I thought myself while getting into the car. I called Kiran who told me she will take another two hours. I drove to city outskirts and spent considerable time in a mall As I sat in food court with my favorite bites, I noticed Kiran coming out of a shop holding a shopping bag followed byVirat. It took me few minutes to compose myself and not react on anger.

They were going out of the mall and I couldn’t fathom following them. Several questions bombarded me: What’s going on? Is something brewing between them?Is that why Kiran’s phone is locked these days? I knew Virat since my childhood, he was closer than my brother. ‘Don’t think overboard, they might have just met accidentally’ told my heart.’But she was supposed to be in team outing and he was supposed to be at work.’, my mind said.

When I returned back home Kiran was not back yet. While I was searching for something, I found one of the shelves was locked. We never locked it so far. I couldn’t merely take it as coincidence. She came shortly demanding a tea from me. Shopping bag was missing.

‘How was the outing?Where did you go?’ I asked her. I looked for hint of shock from her and there was none.

‘Had great fun.’ She said.’ What do you want for dinner? Do we have any left overs? she asked. She is trying to change the topic..

‘Why is everything locked these days? I couldn’t find the shelf key.’ I snapped at her.

‘You suggested keeping the handy cash locked right?Key is in the dressing table, I texted you last week.’ She said. Oops I completely forgot. May be I’m overreacting. But that doesn’t explain why her phone is locked.

As I saw her preparing dinner, I realized she has lost weight. T-shirt fitted her better. There was a glow in her face. Is there something behind it? Like a sudden affair?

Virat called me then asking why I called him that morning.

As we talked I noticed our conversation was not fluid. He seemed to be holding back something. Like the shopping with your wife my mind said. I invited Virat & his wife for lunch next day and that annoyed Kiran who kept saying she wanted a quiet day with me. Virat used to spent most of weekends here with his wife and it never bothered her before,I noted.

We ended up ordering outside for lunch as Kiran said she had zumba next morning. Throughout lunch I looked for some reaction from both of them but to my annoyance I couldn’t find any. Next few days were miserable as my mind was constantly on alert. I was unable to concentrate on work. Kiran kept asking is something wrong which I didn’t answer. Her phone was still locked.

That day Kiran said she will be late due to some work issue. My mind was restless. I decided to check on her. I immediately drove to her office and parked in the opposite side. I wasn’t sure how long to wait but I didn’t have to wait longer. Virat’s car came in few minutes ,Kiran got in and they drove away. I decided to follow them this time and saw Virat’s car going inside a hotel. What should I do next? Catch them in action?Alert Virat’s wife? File for divorce? I married her against my family wishes. Virat was the only one who stood by me that time.

I was drunk by the time Kiran came home.

‘What’s happening Anand? You are not telling me what it is?Neither talking to me these days’ she chided.

I was thinking of next course of action. Should I hire a detective? When that stage comes I want to kick Virat as I couldn’t digest him doing this to me. My manager remarked my work was shabby that week. I was researching on how to spy Kiran’s phone and narrowing down on detectives.


That evening Virat called me and said he desperately wanted to talk to me and didn’t take no for the answer. Is he going to say he and Kiran have fallen in love?


I agreed to meet him outside office. He asked me to get into the car and drove to the same hotel where he went with Kiran that day. As I was about to ask why he chose the place to talk, I saw Kiran sitting in reception in a complete knock out dress. She handed me a bag and asked me to change. I couldn’t understand what’s happening.


‘Didn’t I tell you, he forgets his own birthday?’ Kiran laughed and Virat joined it too. Oh yes, my birthday was tomorrow.


As I changed and went to my birthday party I realized Kiran and Virat has taken tremendous effort in organizing a birthday party for me as I had a tough year. I couldn’t meet Kiran’s eyes when she handed me a gift saying it was Virat’s selection.
