Aloe vera also known as aloe barbadensis miller is a low maintenance plant which requires lots of sun light. This all purpose herb has been used since time immemorial in health and beauty practices.Grab any health/beauty magazine and you will be greeted with a long list of endless benefits of Aloe Vera.

Wash an aloe vera leaf, peel the skin and scoop out the aloe vera gel, grind and freeze the gel in an ice cube tray. This will stay good for upto 6 months. To use the gel, simply remove the required amount of Aloe Vera cubes and let them thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Aloe vera gel is widely marketed these days.Pure aloe vera gel is never the bright green color that you will find in the plastic bottles stacked at most department stores, these are loaded with harmful preservatives…steer clear of them at all costs! The second best option for those who have no access to Aloe Vera leaves is to look for a brand which has more than 99% of Aloe Vera with food based preservatives.Such as these which are meant for external use only.

Tried and Tested DIY Moisturizing Aloe Vera Shampoo
Mix 1 tsp Aloe Vera gel,1 tsp mild shampoo in a bowl.Wet hair, apply this mixture to scalp and wash. This controls dandruff and results in shiny hair.A mild shampoo is a Sulfate and Paraben free shampoo.Few examples of mild shampoos are Himalaya,Khadi,Natures gate and Dr Bronner's liquid Castile soap.

    Aloe Vera Hair Pack
Massage some Aloe Vera gel into your scalp, leave it on for 30 mins and wash. This eliminates dandruff, itchiness and promotes hair growth.

This winter with not much hibiscus flowers left on my tree I was unable to make my favorite hair oil :(.Armed with a beauty secret my cousin once shared,I turned to make my very own Aloe Vera hair oil :).All you need is a decent sized Aloe Vera leaf from your backyard or from your local grocery store and some organic unrefined coconut oil and you are good to get started.

Tried and Tested Aloe Vera Hair Oil
Wash an Aloe Vera leaf, peel the skin and scoop out the gel.Mix equal amounts of Aloe Vera gel and organic unrefined coconut oil (I used parachute) in a wide pan.Cook on a slow flame till all the gooey stuff vanishes, moisture evaporates and oil remains.Remove, cool, strain and store in a glass jar.Luke warm little oil and apply to scalp everyday. This cools the scalp, eliminates dandruff, controls hair fall resulting in hair growth.Don't forget to do a hotel towel treatment before taking a head bath for best results.Have a look at this video which demonstrates the recipe DIY Aloevera Hair Oil | Indusladies

Note - Make sure to use freshly extracted Aloe Vera gel and not store bought for making this oil.

I bought mine from Home Depot. It is a small plant.Nurseries carry large ones.Make sure your aloe plant is of right variety – Aloe Vera barbadensis miller.

Aloe Vera powder for skin and hair
    • Mix little Aloe Vera powder with a tsp of mild shampoo and use for head bath. This works great!
    • You can make your own Aloe Vera shampoo using Dr Bronner's Liquid Castile soap by replacing the gel with the powder.Check this out.Aloe Vera Shampoo Recipe: Make Your Own Aloe Shampoo
    • Aloe Vera powder can also be used in making hair growth packs.
    • It can be mixed with herbal hair wash powders.
    • It can be added to Henna and Indigo hair packs for conditioning.
    • You can replace Aloe vera gel with Aloe vera powder in face packs.
    • You can add the powder to your bathing powder/body scrub and use.
For more details, check this out - Ayurvedic Herbs: Organic Aloe Vera Powder | Henna Blog Spot
I am not sure if it can be used for making hair oil.I bought a large Aloe Vera leaf from my local grocery store and used it for making the hair oil.

I used Aloe in the following way and got best results:

    Constipation :
Take 1/4 cup Aloe Vera gel and put in the mixer add one cup water , blend it, add this to any juice , water or buttermilk or lassi and drink before going to bed,,,, In the morning bowels will be cleared .

    Hair fall :
Put Aloe gel 3 spoons, 1/2 sp lime juice, one small onion cut into pieces, 1/2 spoon apple cider vinegar, 3 cloves garlic ,and few curry leaves . blend it to a fine paste adding little water if needed. Apply this mixture in the roots of the hair. wait for 30 minutes and wash the hair with sikakai powder for best results. If sikakai powder is not available, u can use mild shampoo. Do it weekly twice. Hairfall will stop and new hair will grow. Adding mehendi is optional .

    For smooth skin:
Take 3 spoons of aloe gel , few petals of panneer rose ( rose used to make gulkand or rose water) one vitamin E oil capsule , 1 spoon milk, blend it nicely and apply all over the face, hands and legs. Dry skin will become soft and also the skin tan will vanish after few applications.

    Excess bleeding:

Take a kadai, fry 5 or 7 cloves of garlic in little ghee, add 1/4 cup of water, add 1/4 cup palm jaggery, 1/4 cup of aloe gel, once it is cooked, remove from heat and cool. take this mixture twice a day.

Hats off to you, @kveena . I have only one body and you dish out so many DIY recipes so often! I am tempted to try all; in the end I don't do anything!

    I will, I will, I will!

@shravs3 An update on this reply. Yes you can use Aloe Vera powder to make your own hair oil. This process is super easy to make which is termed as “Aditya Pakkam” in Ayurveda, ideal for summer.

Hair oil using Aloe Vera powder
Fill a glass jar with Aloe Vera powder. Completely cover the powder with an organic unrefined Coconut oil or Sesame oil. Leave in a sunny spot for several weeks. After several weeks in a warm spot, your oil should have a nice, clean aloe scent. It will also have taken up some of the color of the aloe leaves.Strain, place a strainer over a funnel, and pour the oil through the strainer into a a glass bottle and use regularly. :)

However the former recipe which calls for slow cooking equal amounts of Aloe Vera gel and coconut oil till all the moisture evaporates is more stronger and potent. The only downside is it takes a while to do it.

 I know it’s tempting! but sticking to the same routine such as a DIY hair oil, hair pack (optional) and a natural shampoo for atleast 3 to 6 months gives best results :).

I have been using Aloe hair oil since November and the results are too good.It made my hair more softer and keeps my scalp cool.My daughter’s hair is more shinier and bouncy after shampooing her with a mix of Aloe Vera gel and mild shampoo.Try Aloe and you will love it.
