    Adieu, my good friend..

The time has come for parting. It wrenches my heart. It has been an association of close to 80 years. When I was told it was just a question of time, I felt a lump in my throat. My mind went back to the distant past when fate brought us together. I was perhaps in my early childhood when we became as inseparable as the Siamese twins. We really enjoyed the long togetherness of several decades. And now, the experts told me that it would be better if I let him go. I muttered to myself that it was easier said than done. I knew that he was quite sick and I was merely holding on to him in vain. Parting, I tell you, is a very cruel thing.

When I went to the medico in desperation, he looked at me sadly. ‘Oh my baby’ he would have told me in consolation but for my bald head and silvery beard. He told me that I was making life difficult for both of us. ‘As days go on you would be more in pain than him’, he warned me. He was as merciless as the hangman who felt delight whenever he tested the strength of his rope. He was a good businessman and he finally made me agree to put my life-long associate to eternal sleep. It was a moment when I felt as if my whole body-weight had been shifted to my heart.

As the countdown for the Euthanasia neared, I felt really miserable. I spent all my time reminiscing the jolly time we had together particularly when we dined in expensive hotels. ‘Food is not going to taste half as good when he is gone’, I lamented to myself in grief. Finally, we reached the fateful day. The tragedy was that he was not aware at all of the fact that I was not the one who would undergo the cruel fate but he. What probably made him think so was that I was asked to occupy the patient’s chair. Poor fellow did not realise that he was facing the last few minutes of his life’s long journey.

The chair was very uncomfortable. It was tilting at a dangerous angle that made me feel that would fall into a bottomless pit anytime. The doctor was least concerned about it. The more the dangerous angle in which I was sitting, the happier he seemed to be. He then pumped some spray around the seat of my friend and gave an injection at the place occupied by him to make to parting as least painful as possible. ‘The time for your friend to leave you is now’ he announced and wrenched my decaying tooth with a huge contraption as I shouted at the top of my voice. The dentist looked a bit shocked at my violent reaction and expressed his regret that I was put to so much pain. If it was not for the fact that he had stuffed a ball of cotton in the mount to minimise the bleeding, I would have told him that I did not cry because of the physical pain but the pain of my tooth’s parting. He wanted to show me the wrenched out tooth but I held up my hand forbidding him from indulging in such heartless demonstration.

As the dentist sat down to prepare the bill for his cruel action, I was brooding over the game of the cruel fate that brought us together to the clinic only to send me back alone. What joyful times we had together for long years! All those delicious foods would not have tasted half as good without his grinding, I mean active, support. He used to love the twice a day bath that I gave him. I wondered how he fell ill despite the best attention that I gave him all his life. If fate is finally going to have its say, it could have zeroed in on someone else's ill-kept tooth and not my pampered one. If my tooth could speak, it would have told me, ‘This is all life is about my friend! Stop grieving!’

    Dear Cheeniya Sir,

What a farewell for the departed soul. He has been a soulmate in helping you have delicious Rathna Cafe Tiffin since your childhood. Even when you were given trivial activities as Probationary Officer in SBI, he helped you grind himself with his friends instead of saying something harsh to the higher level officers. It is heartless act on the part of the Dentist to show him to you after he is pulled out but professional act to make sure he did his job before he could bill you.

As I mentioned to you earlier, my wife keeps everything that belongs to my son from his young age including his initial tooth. Are you replacing him with golden one? Your club members must be having an emergency meeting to discuss your loss. :roflmao:

    Dear Cheeniya sir,

Phew!! Oh my!! What an experience for you. I was thinking what a good man you are - so many feelings for a tooth that is causing you trouble and on top of it, all that money you had to shell out not to speak of the fact that you cannot speak while visiting a dentist!! Now it makes me wonder which one of those pearly whites is so dear to you or would you feel the same way for each one of them. How dare I ask a dad 'which one of your children is more important to you!" I get it sir! Yet, that tooth must have been so important to get this reaction though
I can only imagine and laugh my head off!!!

Talk about dentist chairs, I have to tell you that my previous dentist had the best ones and while the current one is somewhat old fashioned, I trust his ways better. The only problem - the man cannot keep quiet without cracking a joke a minute!! You will like him. Thankfully he does not expect me to laugh, I do anyways after the appointment and get to chide him before he sees my teeth in my next appointment, for all the jokes when he knows well I can't laugh. He is a good friend and all is well.

While you went through this rigmarole for that tooth of yours, we sure enjoyed your write up. I wish to say "Long live the rest of your teeth". Do take care of yourself though and don't forget to keep these ramblings coming.

Truly enjoyed this write up sir :)

Dear Cheeniya Sir, What a nice farewell to a friend with whom you had decades of faithful association! He made you have wonderful lunch and dinner and got a sweet smile in turn that too was contributed by him.I am reminded of a write up by Ja. Raa. Sundaresan in this regard.
We are giving farewell to childhood and innocence, School , College and education, youth and beauty, siblings and parents after marriage, job after retirement and so on. Life is made up of so many farewells one after the other.Ultimate farewell will not be felt by us.

    Dear Cheeniya sir,
It was such a relief when I came to know that it is all about a tooth!
My mind went with various imaginations. .. Sentimental, emotional, severe health problems and on and on!
You can read and type with one eye and one finger. With one tooth less I am sure you can enjoy good food.

    My dear Anna

Excellent write up. In the beginning only I understood you are talking of something very dear to you which you do not want to part.

When you mentioned about the chair I understood it is about your tooth. Each part of our body is so important and it is for us to take care. I have lost two teeth both sides but instead of going to the Doctor I manage without filling it. I am a foodie and eat everything sometimes it gets stuck and it takes time to get rid.

As Syamala has mentioned you can enjoy food without one tooth.Tooth must have also felt the separation as it is parting from a loving person

If your tooth could speak, it would have instructed you to not customarily bury it under the fluffy pillow hopeful of an apprenticed tooth fairy on a night shift picking up the distress signal of your moan, but, plop it in a glass of water for El Ratoncito Pérez (Pérez the Mouse) from Spanish folklore to replace your yanked tooth as gratitude for quenching his thirst.

Tooth fairies are inept in their dainty costumes and cotton-soft fingers for the tough-squad job to plunge replaced tooth into the gummy pit without you shrieking and frightening the neighbourhood. Whereas, rodents are known to be unsparing teeth growers whose dental profusion outlives that of the two-timed (diphyodont) human.

Trust me, this folklorish rodent called Pérez lurking in your cavernous plumbing would know a thing or two on how to fix your wretched condition with his agile toolkit than the flitting fairies in their velvety gloves humming jingles who would probably be trained onsite watching YouTube video on how to drill a hole for the gifted implant.

Don’t indulge the time-honoured tooth fairy. Leave some cheese and water for our man or rodent of the hour — Ratoncito Pérez. Chu moo chu!

What a wonderful write up! At first I took it for some ailing friend in person and then realised your lost tooth was much more your companion than any friend could be. As maam Jayasala says, too many issues to bid farewell to, as we grow in years. I am sure you will continue to enjoy your food inspite of this

    Dear Cheeniya Sir
OMG:dizzy: Amazing write up.. You shooted up my BP and transferred the weight of your write up to my heart and slowly relieved after knowing it is your tooth. Enjoyed it .
Damn good farewell.. if your tooth could understand your emotional bonding and your farewell write up it would have immensely felt proud to been a part of you.
    Semma sir..:clap2:
