Dosa Or Idli Batter With Blender Or Food Processor?

    What can do to make my dosa batter soft and silky? My grinder somehow is not grinding well. Can use my blender , juiced or food processor to make dosa batter?

    Please advice. My dosas are not all soft. I want to make Idli as well. Please help!

    Nothing like a grinder...

    Well do you have a mixer?

    Dosa batter will be good but for idli I always prefer to have a grinder.

    Do not use a blender or food processor...always use a stone wet grinder (like Elgi Ultra wet grinders) for making batter. Use rice:urad dal=3:1 for idlis and 4:1 for dosas.

    You can use mixie /blender to make dosa batter, rice:urad dal 4:1 along with 1-teaspoon of fenugreek. Make the batter, add salt / pinch of baking soda and ferment it by putting in oven for 4-6 hours. Dosa will come nicely.

    I am using Preethi mixy grinder. I am confused with the term mixer. I also have a food processor , which has blender , chopper ,slicer, citrus press and dough maker.

    Why dosa will be okay and idli must have a grinder?

    Thanks for the reply. I have a small kitchen. Don’t have much storage to keep a wet grinder. Why does idli and dosa has different ratios?

    How much W blender can I use?
    I soaked rice for 10 hours and it still is little grainy in my batter. Other than changing my grinder is there any other thing I should look for? I used idly rice, urad dal and raw rice for dosa batter.

    If you add more urad dal(3:1), idlis come softer. Also, more urad dal causes the dosas to stick to the pan. So, different ratios.

    For making idly / dosa, you need boiled rice and popular brand is sold as 'Ponni Idli rice'. Also use good quality, whole Urad dal (white in color), it is better than split urad dal. The rice & urad dal quality also makes a difference in dosa / idly quality.

    Recommended soaking time is 4 to 5 hours, in fact over soaking is not good. Grinder gives more batter in quantity with silky soft, fluffy batter.

    Blender batter will be grainy, it will not give smooth texture. By experimenting with water quantity to grind, you can make the batter for dosa / idly.

    You can also add handful of old rice (i.e, overnight soaked cooked rice) while grinding and it will help the batter to ferment reasonably to make dosa / idly.

    Any way, it will not be same as grinder batter - dosa (in texture, taste, crispness).

    I've heard that in America also*, one can simply buy the idly batter in a plastic bag.... both dry (we add the water) and wet (in the fridge section).
    I saw such a thing being used in an episode of "Bigg Boss 2 - Tamil". That kind of convenient thing eliminates a lot of waiting, grinding, and anxiety over whether or not the batter will rise, and whether the idly would turn out like stone or sponge.

    I know some who add a handful of poha (flattened rice) or even cooked rice to the blender (mixie, grinder) to make idlies softer.
