Bollywood has many singers who were very talented and sang one or a few songs that became hits. But true fame and more songs eluded these singers. Some due to their own choices such as being choosy, or going back to their regional language's music, and for some plain luck or music industry politics. Whatever the reason, these less-recognized singers sang songs that went on to become immortal.

Share about one such talented yet underappreciated Bollywood singer that you like to listen to and your favorite songs by him or her.

Let's write about one singer per post and wait for at least two posts by other members or two hours before posting more. : )

Hemlata. Had "Lata" in her name, and was as talented but fame eluded her. She did get some credit and people remember and hum her songs though might not remember who sang it.

Chitchor, Ankhiyon ke jharokon se and Nadiya ke Paar are the movies she is most known for. My favorite song by her is Le to aaye ho humein from Dulhan wohi jo piya man bhaaye. Talluri Rameshwari looks innocent and girl-next-door in it. For a while the movie's name angered my budding feminist views. Is a bride a bride only if she wins the heart of the man.......

@Rihana great thread!! I love all of Hemlata's songs. Chitchor especially.... Dasettan and Hemlata would have just weaved magic through and through.

Speaking of underappreciated, the name that comes to my mind immediately is that of Suman Kalyanpur - called poor man's Lata. She was probably popular some in Marathi, but there are some songs of hers that I just absolutely love! Here's one -

with of course the inimitable Rafi!!

I was about to mention this! Recently attended Shaan’s concert. Enjoyed the concert thoroughly. But wondered why his popularity declined suddenly...

@Rihana hemalata really sang some beautiful numbers.. in nadiye ke paar..(the old version of hum aapke hai kaun)

aarti mukherjee, she won the filmfare award for best singer.

preethi saagar, she only got her two minutes with childrens nursery rhymes..

sulakshana pandit, she got into depression or something of that sort?? not sure.. coming from a musical family, and acting and singing, yet well known..

Didn't know Yesudas had another name - Dasettan Ganagandharvan!

Suman Kalyanpur had some great song with Rafi. Tehriye hosh mein aa loon... from Mohabbat Isko Kehte hain. Looks like she had most hits in the early 60's. Some from not so well-known movies. Reading about her in film magazines in childhood was one of the first introductions to film industry politics.

Shaan is a singer who surely deserved more songs. We used to watch him conduct Saregama on TV. Thanks to this thread, his songs were on my running playlist last week. Tanha dil, Musu Musu haasi (Pyaar mein kabhi kabhi), Koi Kehe kehta rahe (Dil Chahta hai).

Felt so nice to watch Koi kehe kehta rahe.. Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanne, Saif Ali Khan. What a song, what a combination.
