I recently sorted out my wardrobe and and came across few unused dress materials which were either purchased by me earlier or gifted to me..I gave for stitching, these days the tailors stitching charges in my locality and surroundings also have increased..for stitching churidars set with lining 450-550 INR is the tailoring charge..may even be more if we give in a well known boutique..some are charging extra for dupatta zigzag, extra piping in salwar top etc...the effort in walking to shop, giving material for stitching and following up with phone call or repeated visit and then collecting back..on the other hand , so many good quality kurtas and kurtis are available at 500-1500 INR price range and it's so easy to do mix and match with leggings and dupatta or patiala dupatta or palazzo pant etc..getting good salwar set in retail showrooms in 1000-2000 INR range,,
cost actually works out better than buying material ( any decent salwar dress material costs 700 INR and above ) and getting stitched..
I'm generally accustomed to wearing more of Indian wear for day to day use., hence it was of interest to me..
I agree that fitting maybe slightly better in stitched outfit, but then many good brands of clothing also offer good fit in readymade and many clothing stores do small alterations free of cost to improve fit if customer purchase any outfit..
just want to get inputs from others, really what's the advantage and disadvantage of getting salwar suits stitched versus buying readymade salwar kameez set or doing mix and match with Kurta leggings etc?

Since I am quite tall (5'7"), my mom used to get my clothes stitched. But nowadays, I find better options in readymade. The problem is, the unstitched material is actually not enough to make the designs I prefer (long sleeves or lengthy).

Custom-tailored clothes fit much better. And choosing the patterns and fabric yourself lets you get unique outfits.

I like the whole process of getting clothes tailored. It's part of India visits and I enjoy the nostalgia.

So true! I have several salwar-kameez pieces that never got stitched because the fabric was inadequate.

@Amica - totally, right about the nostalgia. I love that the tailor can create my designs. But it's the time and energy, that makes it a chore. Last time, we had to visit the tailors 3 or 4 times, before we got our clothes, because of one reason or another - and they weren't ready on the expected time. Sometimes, we have had designs switched, and stitched in the wrong size - and it's just as heartbreaking as it sounds. I only continue to bother with this tailor because she is the best one I've had, and I still have many of her pieces for more than a decade.

I had bought cut patterns, that even come with embroideries, and stitched it on my own machine. Not the thing to do when you are busy with work or have little children. However, it offers you the option to fit it to your preference.

If one were to buy readymade, it is still useful to run a second stitch inside, over the stress points, like shoulders, arm, and on the sides.

@BhumiBabe, I hear you. Dealing with tailors can be a pain.

I guess I enjoy designing clothes and seeing my vision brought to life. If I had Amulet's energy and sewing chops, I'd do it myself.

    Good tip! Thanks.
