Salwars - Stitched Versus Readymade..

Since I am quite tall (5'7"), my mom used to get my clothes stitched. But nowadays, I find better options in readymade. The problem is, the unstitched material is actually not enough to make the designs I prefer (long sleeves or lengthy).

 

Custom-tailored clothes fit much better. And choosing the patterns and fabric yourself lets you get unique outfits.

I like the whole process of getting clothes tailored. It's part of India visits and I enjoy the nostalgia.

So true! I have several salwar-kameez pieces that never got stitched because the fabric was inadequate.

@Amica - totally, right about the nostalgia. I love that the tailor can create my designs. But it's the time and energy, that makes it a chore. Last time, we had to visit the tailors 3 or 4 times, before we got our clothes, because of one reason or another - and they weren't ready on the expected time. Sometimes, we have had designs switched, and stitched in the wrong size - and it's just as heartbreaking as it sounds. I only continue to bother with this tailor because she is the best one I've had, and I still have many of her pieces for more than a decade.

 

I had bought cut patterns, that even come with embroideries, and stitched it on my own machine. Not the thing to do when you are busy with work or have little children. However, it offers you the option to fit it to your preference.

If one were to buy readymade, it is still useful to run a second stitch inside, over the stress points, like shoulders, arm, and on the sides.

 

@BhumiBabe, I hear you. Dealing with tailors can be a pain.

I guess I enjoy designing clothes and seeing my vision brought to life. If I had Amulet's energy and sewing chops, I'd do it myself.
