Great Indian Teaching System

Sorry for the second intervention.For any child mother and father are prime Gurus.While thinking about great gurus and great sishyas normally we don't think about the lesser educated, less cultured ,unemployed, hooligans and a few others who indulge in theft and burglary as a mode of living.We hate them very often for their bad conduct.You may wonder why I chose to talk about the less ethical people while talking about the great Gurus.

Noticing that his father is growing old,the son of a burglar asked his father to teach him the art of stealing so that he could continue the family tradition after his father.
The father knew that if one wanted to learn swimming, he had to jump into the water.
Ok, said the father and he took his son when he intended burglary in a house.
Once inside, he opened a closet and asked his son to find out what was inside. No sooner had the lad stepped in then the father slammed the door shut and bolted it making such a noise in the process that the whole house was awakened. Then he himself slipped quietly away. Inside the closet the boy was terrified, angry and puzzled as to how he was going to make his escape. Then an idea came to him. He began to make a noise like a cat; whereupon a servant lit a candle and opened the closet to let the cat out. The boy jumped out as soon as the closet door opened and everyone gave chase. Observing a well beside the road he threw a large stone into it and hid in the shadows; then stole away while his pursuers peered into the depths hoping to see the burglar drown.
Back home again the boy forgot his anger in his eagerness to tell his story. But his father said. "Why tell me the tale? You are here. That is enough. You have learnt the trade.
May be the case relates to a thief.Yet he was particular that the son should be in the field, struggle and suffer if he wants to become an expert.The field chosen may be wrong. But the method adopted by him was quite correct.He allowed his son to experience the fear, anxiety and the risk involved in this profession too.
This story needs to be interpreted that theoretical knowledge is no good.One can
understand better only if you have a direct experience.The profession is unethical ,yet there is an approach to learn it.

.Everything is an art and it has to be learnt using common sense.Escaping without being noticed is really an art, though not ethical.I am reminded of a saying in Tamil'Kalavum katru mara.' (one should learn the art of stealing also and forget the same'.)
The story teaches us two things.
1.The son does not want his father to suffer in his old age and he wants to support the family.
2.The father wanted to teach the struggles involved, though it may result in his son being caught.

Each profession occupies a specific niche in society — doctors heal, engineers design and bankers handle our money. Teaching, however, stands out as a special entity. At a preliminary stage, teachers instill the transcendent faculties of communication, decision making and awareness of social responsibilities. Later in life, no matter which field we choose to pursue, we again turn to teachers for training. A strong information base and well developed capabilities of comprehension and analysis are critical for progress.

The society and the set up have changed in the past 60 years. We see total indiscipline and deterioration of values in children.In many schools teachers are daunted or blackmailed by students and there have been murder attempts on teachers.

Schools have great potential as a locus for crime prevention. Teachers have to be more careful in the developmental years especially in crime prone zones.They have much more responsibility to help youth develop as healthy, happy, productive citizens;. and the community
usually supports schools' efforts to socialize youth. Many of the precursors of delinquent behavior are school-related and therefore likely to be amenable to change through school-based intervention.

Once a strong base is created by school and college teachers, everyone understands that learning is never a finished job and it is an ever lasting process.We are always learners in one form or other.
1. We learn from our children. They become our teachers.
2.We learn from our mistakes.Mistakes become masters.
3.All our anger & agonies,beatings & burnings,challenges & churns,cries and cracks,toils and turmoils,twists & turns make us mellow down & season us a lot.
4. From good persons we know how to be,and from the so called wicked we know how not to be.
5. When we listen to music,it soothens our hearts & music becomes our preceptor.
6.When we hear the mazhalai or babblings of children, we forget the pressing problems. then children become our masters.
7.The sun,the rain,the mountains ,the rivers & trees- all are teaching the lesson of PAROPAKARA ,without uttering a single word by their mere routine.

(Uddhava Gita ( Krishna's teachings to his friend Uddhava, before He ascended heaven, gives a list of 24 teachers inclusive of reptiles, birds, plants and animals and courtesans too

8. Above all,"SILENCE" itself is the greatest GURU-MAUNA GURU.It is meditation in SILENCE that brought into our Bharat so many great thinkers,luminaries & Acharyas whom we revere most.
The list is endless.
Let us bow with reverence,not only to human teachers,but also to NATURE and above all to every small bit and piece of experience in our life.
Let Teachers' Day be a memorable day.

This post is splendid indeed. There are so many seemingly inert yet they too are gurus besides those visible in our vicinity.
I really thoroughly enjoyed reading slowly this feed back .
Yet again a crowning glory to original post by madam sister.
