I am growing my nails because I'd like to get a simple French manicure.

Here is an article I found, 9 surprising things that are ruining your manicure

    What are your experiences with

    1. Keeping your manicure intact

    2. Still doing daily housework

And gel-based manicures are a big no-no for me.

By the way, what color nail polish to buy if I want French manicure (I heard salons add thinners to their nail polish to make it last longer, but manicure won't!)

Is it only clears and whites? Or some other colors too?

CE - Sorry to be a debbie downer here but the French Manicure is not for Indian hands. It gets stained with turmeric the very next day for me. I was veggies with turmeric water, use turmeric in my cooking and eat with my hands. Obviously my right hand is a mess. Same with all light colors. Ive given up on French manicures. I usually do bright colors - reds, deep pinks, blues etc.
I get mine done with Gel itself. All others peel off in a day. I don't have the patience to reapply polish weekly, gels last for 3-4 weeks and I manage with it.

To regular polish last, back in the day, I used to use gloves for doing the dishes. It's not convenient at all.

Lately, I have been doing light colors with regular polish for important occasions and then redoing it with gel when I need them to last.

Yes so true. Which gel do you recommend?

LOL, last week I went to Indian restaurant and turmeric was on my right hand the whole day!!!

    Will stick with darker colors.

Very scared of gel. I heard they file your nail with metal, exposing your natural nail bed and damaging it (over long period).

Or you have to soak in acetone for 10 to 15 minutes.

    Acetone :fearscream::fearful::unamused:

Otherwise I'm excited to get gel.

Please advise. What is safest way to remove gel manicure?

I don't do gel polishes, but I am a fan of OPI Infinite Shine, which looks like gel but is sturdier than regular polish and can be removed easily with regular polish remover. I do my own nails as I am paranoid about cleanliness at nail salons and I hate people trying to cut my cuticles.
I love the reds, oranges and maroons for my toes but I also have a number of light shades for my hands. It will depend on your skin tone but I particularly like OPI's Meet Me by the Star Ferry.

Whichever ones the girl at my regular nail place uses. She sometimes calls to tell me a newer product is out and to come and check it out!

I don't usually go back until I have no polish left. My nails grow out quickly and with all I do, the polish doesn't stay for over a month anyway. I also leave my nails unpainted with regular clear polish many times. I hate getting the gel polish removed with acetone or file and don't mind having half painted nails for a few weeks!

My sister tells me the UV lights under which gel paints dry are definitely not safe. I really don't know about it. That's one of the reasons I get it done infrequently.

Now my friends and the cleaning lady are all raving about the nexgen nails where you don't need to use the UV lights. I hate to sit in the salon with my hand dipped in powder while they "make" my long nails when I already have long, strong nails. You could look into it too. The cleaning lady's seem to stay intact even after all the chores around here.

I use OPI too. Love the shades. I hear you on the cleanliness of the nail places. Until my son's diagnosis, I mostly did it on my own or had someone come home and do it for me, with my own tools. Now, this is one of the ways I get to unwind :) I usually go in the afternoons, after dropping him off at therapy, on those days when I'm feeling especially low. The outing helps a lot. Especially since the lady who regularly does my service is really nice.

This is the approach I might take

That's a great idea. No UV light business!

Yes, part of the reason to go for manicure is for outing ..... got lots to deal with. And hopefully I can get co-worker to accompany me!

i heard people say you should take your own supplies to the salon, i.e. your own nail file, etc.

Can you recommend other things to take? Or should I take a mini manicure kit that salon uses only for me?

Will initially fo for regular polish and depending on comfort level, will spring for gels (esp the non-UV, easy to remove ones)

CE - I used to take my own supplies. Now I just let them use theirs. They claim to be sterilizing and opening it from a fresh bag each time. Leap of faith for sure!
